A very hectic London Book Fair

London Book Fair has once again been and gone and a very busy one it
was too, certainly on the Tuesday when I attended. The aisles were
swarming with humanity as was London itself. I always forget just how
busy London is and how packed with tourists.

Pauline Rowson discusses using time frames in crime novels
Time frames in novels, and particularly when writing a series, as I do
with the DI Andy Horton novels, and more recently with
the new crime series, featuring former Royal Marine Commando, Art
Marvik, are a tricky thing. There is ‘real time’ and there is
‘fictional time’.

Pauline Rowson talks about her writing routine
I am often asked to describe a typical writing day. For me there isn’t one but I do like to write every day if I possibly
can, speaking engagements permitting. Some days when the words flow, or I
am at a critical stage of writing - usually at the end of the first
draft of a novel - I am keen to crack on and write as much as I can.
This can result in me spending up to seven hours, maybe more, sitting at
my computer. Not good for you! But I promise you I do get up to walk
around and take all the necessary breaks, although my wrists take a bit
of a hammering or should that be the keyboard takes the hammering?

Fugelmere Probus Club of Fleet Hooked on Crime

Fleet in North Hampshire were hooked on crime of the fictional type I'm
glad to say as they listened intently to my talk on how I write my
crime novels set on the South Coast of England.

Q & A - Do you outline your stories before you write them or do you let the plot and characters lead the way?
I’m always eager to begin writing a new novel so I don't wait until I
have a complete outline before doing so. I don't even wait until I have
conducted all my research and I certainly have no idea at the beginning
who the killer is and why.
I usually work up an outline of the first
four chapters and some character profiles. I conduct some research and
then start writing.

What's on in March 2016
March kicks off with my appearance at CSI Portsmouth on Saturday 5th at the Pyramids Centre, Southsea. CSI Portsmouth 2016, part of Portsmouth BookFest, is a one day event. Now
in its sixth year, it sees a great line up of crime authors, police
and forensic experts debating crime fiction and crime fact in two panel
events during the day.
Also in March I will be guest speaker at Fugelmere Probus Club (Fleet) on 14 March.
And on the writing front I'll be working my way through the copy-edits suggested by my publisher, Severn House, for Dangerous Cargo, the second in the marine crime series featuring former Royal Marine Commando, Art Marvik. Marvik first appeared in Silent Running and has received some great reviews.
"A tense, terrifying thrill ride that twists and turns with dizzying
speed, combined with a likable, smart, tough, but all too human hero,
make this a cracking-good new series—action fans need Marvik on their
radar." Booklist (USA)

Q & A - What authors and books inspired you?

loved adventure and mystery
novels when I was a child and a teenager and this love of crime fiction,
thrillers and mystery novels has continued throughout my adulthood. In
my teens I enjoyed the novels of Leslie Charteris featuring Simon Templar, The Saint, and those written
by John Creasey featuring The Baron and Gideon to name only two of his characters.
Creasey was a very prolific writer and also the author of Westerns which
I went through a phase of reading,
including those penned by Zane Grey, an author who locked together
character and land so that they were indivisible something that perhaps
also took root with me, locking my characters, DI Andy Horton and Art Marvik in with the sea and the
sea with my characters
