How to write a crime novel - writing first drafts

Crime author, Pauline Rowson So,
I have the idea and I have the location. I might even have the victim. I
certainly don't have the killer or the plot. I put the idea, location
and victim in a circle and I ask myself open questions: who, what,
where, when, why, and how? I don't have all the answers, in fact I have
very few so I do some research, and some more thinking, and gradually I
begin to answer some of those questions.

Fun on the photoshoot on board Condor Ferry for Andy Horton, Lethal Waves

Pauline Rowson reading Lethal Waves on board the Condor Ferry I had great fun on board the Condor Ferry, Commodore Clipper, while it was at Portsmouth International Port recently. I was there for a photo shoot to launch the new Andy Horton crime novel, Lethal Waves. The Commodore Clipper features in Lethal Waves the thirteenth in the series starring my flawed, hunky and rugged detective, Andy Horton. It was a calm and rather grey Sunday but it was brightened by meeting the lovely Captain Steve Leake and his crew, including Hotel Services Operations Manager, Mike Mustill, who allowed me, my husband, Bob, and the photographer, Nick Masson, free reign, escorted and ably assisted by the delightful Cabin Manager, Geoff.

My top ten tips for writing deadly crime fiction

Pauline Rowson, crime author The Guardian newspaper ran an article in 2012 asking writers for their
ten rules for writing, so I thought I would pen my top ten tips for
writing deadly crime fiction. Five years later looking back on it they
still hold good with one or two little tweaks and additions. Here goes.

1. Always have a pencil and paper with you, in every handbag, shopping bag, pocket, and of course beside your bed. You never know when that wonderful idea might strike. A Dictaphone might also be useful. Gone are the days when you got funny looks for talking into a machine or even talking to yourself walking down the road. Everybody’s at it now.

A look back to my time on board the police launch with Hampshire Police Marine Unit

O Heading across to Royal Clarence Marina on the police launch n
this day last year (17 February 2016) I was privileged and delighted to
spend the morning with Hampshire Police Marine Unit researching for
Andy Horton crime novel number fourteen.

I have a great deal of admiration for  the
wonderful Hampshire Police Marine Unit.  They police one of the busiest stretches of water in Europe indeed
in the World. And the marine unit features in my DI Andy Horton crime novelsFatal Catch, DI Andy Horton 12, is dedicated to Hampshire Police and the Marine Unit.
