It's
never easy choosing a new crime novel to read by an author you haven't
heard of before but there is a useful little book often in the libraries
that you can access, or ask the librarian for, it's called 'Who else
writes like...'


In this little gem of a book it says 'If you like Colin Dexter,
Ann Cleeves, Robert Barnard, Graham Hurley, Dorothy Simpson and Neil
White then you might like Pauline Rowson, author of the Inspector Andy
Horton crime novels and those featuring former Royal Marine Commando,

How to write a crime novel, ten top tips to get started

The crime genre is one of the most popular. It is also one of the most competitive in terms of publication and maybe one of the most diverse in terms of story telling. Crime novels range from gritty gruesome, (hardboiled), cosy comfortable, to cops, (police procedural and detective novels) private eyes, gangsters, suspense, thrillers, psychological, historical, contemporary or even futuristic and probably many more variations in between.

Then there is the setting: the city, the sea, countryside, mountains, home or abroad. Exotic or bleak. So there is plenty of scope to work with and the type of crime novel you decide to write is often linked to the type of crime novel you like to read.

Art Marvik's latest mystery Lost Voyage soon out in paperback

A year ago last July my superhero Art Marvik embarked on his latest undercover mission to solve the mystery of the missing tug, the Mary Jo in LOST VOYAGE, his third mission with the UK's National Intelligence Marine Squad.




Lost Voyage was published in hardcover in the UK in July 2017 and in the USA in November 2017 when it was also published as an ebook. It will be available in paperback on 31 August 2018 and can be pre-ordered now.

Proof reading the new Inspector Andy Horton, Dead Passage

I'm busy proof reading the new Inspector Andy Horton DEAD PASSAGE, no. 14 in the police procedural crime series featuring the enigmatic Harley Davidson riding, boat dwelling Portsmouth detective. It's not my favourite job but it's got to be done.





Dead Passage will be published October 2018 in paperback and as an e book. It is available for pre-order on Amazon, The Book Depository, at any bookshop and will also be available for loan from libraries in the UK, USA and Commonwealth.

Silent Running, the first in the fast-paced, action-packed marine mystery series featuring Art Marvik, former Royal Marine Commando, turned undercover marine investigator for the UK's National Intelligence Marine Squad (NIMS) is available as an unabridged audio book and is narrated by Peter Noble.



Nine of my crime novels are now available in audio book format which includes eight in the DI Andy Horton police procedural series.

What's on in July

During July 2018 I will be busy continuing to write Inspector Andy Horton number 15, which might just see Andy discovering the truth behind his mother's disappearance when he was ten years old. I know many readers are eager to learn what really happened to Jennifer Horton (as is of course Andy!) so all might be revealed. I only said 'might'.





For this blog entry I thought I would take a look back at what was on in July 2017 and July 2016 and Art Marvik features heavily in both months on assignment for the National Intelligence Marine Squad.

I
uncover some fascinating forensic facts while conducting research for
my crime novels. There are 13 featuring the rugged and flawed Inspector
Andy Horton with number 14, Dead Passage, being published in October
2018. And there are 3 novels in the mystery thriller series featuring
the tough yet fallible Art Marvik  plus two standalone thrillers.




I'm very grateful to all the
help and inside information given to me by Hampshire Police, the
Hampshire Fingerprint Bureau and forensic scientists who have assisted
me on matters such as toxicology, stab wounds, forensic geology and
more.

Ex con Daryl Woodley is found dead in the remote
location of Farlington Marshes to the north of Portsmouth and the body of a
woman dressed in black is found during a salvage operation to clear a World War
II munitions barge from the seabed off Tipner in Portsmouth Harbour to the
west.  Horton is tasked to find Daryl Woodley’s killer and
the murderer of the woman in black who might very well be the same person.
Aided by Agent Harriet Eames from Europol and working for Detective
Superintendent Uckfield of the Major Crime Team, Horton employs his usual
instinctive approach, combined with a grim determination and a disregard for
procedure to get to the truth.

Inspector Andy Horton hot on the case at the Isle of Wight Festival

DEATH LIES BENEATH is number eight in the Detective Inspector Andy Horton series of police procedural mysteries. It is set in June when the famous Isle of Wight Festival takes place and Horton's investigations take him from Portsmouth across the Solent on the Wightlink ferry to the Isle of Wight and to the festival itself.

The Isle of Wight Festival 2018 takes place from 21 June to 24 June 2018. This year is the 50th anniversary of the festival.
