The story behind Inspector Andy Horton FOOTSTEPS ON THE SHORE

Footsteps on the Shore a DI Andy Horton crime novel Locations inspire me and I’m always out and about looking for a good place to put a body - a fictional one I hasten to add. I’m very fortunate to live in an area which is extremely diverse and offers up all kinds of intriguing places from bays, beaches and boatyards to shores, ships and shipwrecks, coast, coves, ferries and frogmen. You name it Portsmouth, the surrounding harbours, the Solent and the Isle of Wight has it including a Roman castle at Portchester. And it is the latter that is featured in FOOTSTEPS ON THE SHORE along with the Hayling Coastal Path and the Hard at Portsmouth.

Featuring two crime novels for March 2018

Footsteps on the Shore and Dangerous Cargo Two of my crime novels are set in March so I thought I would feature them over the month. There will be extracts, location photographs and articles on the Inspector Andy Horton crime novel FOOTSTEPS ON THE SHORE, number six in the series of currently thirteen, and on the Art Marvik mystery, DANGEROUS CARGO, the second in the series currently of three.

Both crime novels have received some great reviews and are available in paperback, as an ebook, on Amazon Kindle and on Kobo and Foosteps on the Shore is also available in audio book.

Whose story is it? Getting the viewpoint right

Pauline RowsonWhose story is it? That is a question every writer needs to ask before starting to write a novel. From whose viewpoint are you telling the story? Is it single viewpoint or multiple viewpoint? Is it male or female or a mixture of both? Having too many viewpoints and switching them too often will muddle the story and confuse (and often) annoy the reader because it makes it more difficult for them to get inside the character(s) minds.

Lethal Waves on board the Condor Ferry

Pauline Rowson on Condor Ferry for launch of Lethal Waveso I had great fun on board the Condor Ferry, Commodore Clipper, for the launch of the latest in the Inspector Andy Horton crime series, LETHAL WAVES, number thirteen in the series. Hopefully the Condor ferry doesn't experience any lethal waves as it crosses the English Channel to the Channel Islands!

Forget the Page 69 Test here's the Page 18 Test for Lethal Waves

Lethal Waves, Inspector Andy Horton, by Pauline Rowson I have applied the Page 69 test to a few of my crime novels here on my blog, namely SHROUD OF EVIL, A KILLING COAST and DEAD MAN'S WHARF. But this time I thought what the heck let’s break the rules and go for another page or in fact two pages so this is Not The Page 69 Test but The Page 18 Test on LETHAL WAVES, number thirteen in the Inspector Andy Horton crime series. Maybe if you like what you read you’ll buy the novel now out in paperback (UK1 Feb 2018) (USA 1 May 2018) and also now available as an e book on Amazon Kindle and on Kobo (worldwide).

On research with Inspector Andy Horton in Lethal Waves, now in paperback

Lethal Waves, an Andy Horton Marine Mystery by Pauline Rowson LETHAL WAVES now published in paperback as well as an ebook and in hardcover opens in Guernsey when Inspector Andy Horton’s meal with his old friend, Inspector John Guilbert of the States of Guernsey Police, is cut short when a woman is found dead in her cabin on the ferry from Portsmouth to Guernsey. When the idea for this crime novel came to me I contacted Condor Ferries and asked if they would mind me using one of their ferries as one of the settings. I am delighted to say they gave permission and went further than that in offering to open up the ship for my research and for the launch of LETHAL WAVES some eighteen months later.

The setting and order of the Inspector Andy Horton crime novels

Portsmouth Harbour, the setting for the Andy Horton Mysteries The Inspector Andy Horton police procedural crime novels are all set against the atmospheric backdrop of the sea in the Solent area of Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight on the South Coast of England. They have been hailed by reviewers as 'multi-layered', gripping' and 'entertaining' and have been compared to the novels of Ann Cleeves, Colin Dexter, John Harvey, and Peter Robinson to name but some. Also to American writers, Ed McBain and Joseph Wambaugh.
