The write stuff- writing fiction - getting the characters names right




Pauline Rowson with Lethal Waves Coming
up with the right name for characters can be a tricky business.
Sometimes they come to me completely out of the blue, as I am creating a
character, other times I will struggle to find the name that best suits
that particular character and until I do the personality refuses to
come fully alive.






The name has to fit. If it's not right then the character isn't right.

Undercurrent, DI Andy Horton at the Scene of Crime

Undercurrent Inspector Andy Horton crime novel A wet August night and Inspector Andy Horton is returning from London to Portsmouth when police cars on blue lights race past him on the motorway. Nothing unusual in that but as Horton heads for the small yacht on which he lives he sees the police vehicles pulled up outside Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard and draws to a halt.

Inspector Andy Horton's on the hunt for a missing man during Cowes Week




Hilsea Lines Tunnel - Death Surge DI Andy Horton crime novel In Death Surge, the charred remains of a young man are found in the old ruins of the Hilsea Lines in Portsmouth, an ancient monument, which has become a popular walking spot including woodland, meadows and fresh brackish lakes. But the novel opens with DI Andy Horton sailing off the Isle of Wight on his yacht during Cowes Week, until a call from a frantic Sergeant Cantelli, to say his nephew is missing brings Horton back to investigate.

What's on in August?




DI Andy Horton Undercurrent and Death Surge August, and the chance to feature two of my crime novels set during this month, Undercurrent and Death Surge both in the Inspector Andy Horton crime series. August is obviously a busy month for my flawed and rugged detective with a high crime rate in his home coastal city of Portsmouth, England!
