Friday Four

1. My writer-friend Tara Kelly has Yoda-ized her writing journey, and because she says it far better than I could, I'll just link you there.

2. Been busy working through another revision of LOSING FAITH, since I have some extra time before editor A+ will be looking at it. I got some really great suggestions from above writer-friend, and I think they're going a long way in making my book better.

3. I've been told there are 2 books to read this year. I'm reading one now. WINTERGIRLS by Laurie Halse

The Learning Continues...

Even though I've settled back into real life after an amazing writer's conference, the learning never stops. I've been reading through some of my notes from the workshops and keynote speeches, and I can only seem to get through a page or so at a time because I get caught on something that I KNOW I still need to learn.

Yesterday's little nugget of wisdom came from Karen Cushman's keynote speech. It was a question that was stuck in the midst of several other questions, but it was enough to make me

SCBWI Recap...at last!

Sorry for the wait on this...or as you Americans like to say... Saurry! (The Canadians are the only ones who can pronounce this word properly apparantly!)

The moment I arrived home from LA, we had some very fun house guests from Sacramento arrive. So I'm not complaining, about anything, but I ask for your forgiveness on typos today as I am tired.

Here are a few highlights from my time at SCBWI - LA:

First, I met my amazing and awesome critique parnter, Shana Silver. We roomed together and had a bla

Live Blogging From SCBWI - LA! Part 4

This morning I also made it to a Social Media and Branding Workshop with Jenn Bailey and I'll try to throw up a few of the little nuggets of wisdome I found there.

It all started with a book launch video with a very funny guy who was doing everything wrong. Or to be more precise, he wasn't doing anything at all to promote himself and since Oprah hadn't come through, was feeling a bit behind in the area of social media.

Jenn went on to give us a few tips on many of the "Big Dogs" of Social Media:

Live Blogging From SCBWI - LA! Part 3

I've been having a busy morning, but I've at least been trying to tween if I can. If you're not following me yet on Twitter, you can find me here.

A few highlights from this morning...Karen Cushman gave a very inspirational keynote on IN DREAMS BEGIN RESPONSIBILITIES. Among other things, she shared her story and why this conventional writing wisdom has never worked for her:

Butt in chair – taken literally this would mean she'd spend more time in her chiropractor's chair. Write in a recliner, in be

Live Blogging From SCBWI - LA! Part 2

Well! What a day, and it's not even over!

Here's a few exciting highlights from my day so far:

I attended a workshop on Cultivating Your Teen Voice with Frank Portman, author of KING DORK. He talked a lot about similarities and conventions between songwriting and writing fiction, told us about his interesting journey into novel-writing (he sold his first novel on proposal with only 30 pages of pure voice written), and gave us insight how to reward our readers. Very interesting!

From there I went fo

Live Blogging From SCBWI - LA!

I'm having a fabulous time so far at this enormous writer's conference in LA so far. I met my critique partner, Shana Silver, for the first time and she's so much fun! Yesterday we went sightseeing at Venice Beach and spent a long lunch and a long drive talking books.

This morning started with a meet up of Class of 2k10, a debut authors group targeting booksellers, librarians and teachers that I'm a part of. There are four of us (out of about twenty) who are at SCBWI and it was great to finally p

Friday Four: Four Ultra-Cool People I Can't Wait To See At SCBWI!

Here are four (actually quite a few more than four) reasons I'm looking forward to SCBWI in LA next week:

1. I get to meet my critique partner Shana Silver for the first time! We've been pissing each other off...I mean helping each other with each other's writing for several years now (4?) but since we live on opposite ends of the country, have not had a chance to meet. Until now. So excited!

2. My excellent editor, Anica Mrose Rissi, will be in the house! She's offering several workshops at SCBWI

Authors With Abs: Rewarding Oneself

Here's a question: Why should you get in better shape?

I ask myself this question alot, and in fact just recently again. Why? because sometimes the far-off goal really isn't enough. I can tell myself I'd like to be in shape for the writer's conference I'm going to in LA, but at the same time, it's still easy enough to put off the diet and exercise until tomorrow.

That's why it's important to have rewards along the way and not just The Big Goal. For me, every couple of pounds I lose comes along wit

Journey To Publication: Update

For those of you who are following my journey toward publication, I did hear from my editor this week. The updated info is that she won't be looking at my first revisions of LOSING FAITH until late August at the earliest.

It seems at every stage in becoming published there is much waiting. However this time it didn't bother me too much to find out I had another unexpected wait ahead of me. I just received some awesome notes from another writer-friend who was looking at the book for me and so I pl
