10 Fun Halloween Movies for the Family by Susan Hanniford Crowley
I love this time of the year with all the movies out there for kids. I’m going to list my ten favorites.
I found The Addams Family cartoon movie released in 2019 to be fun and more true to the Charles Addams cartoons that I grew up reading. It is recommended for 7 and up.
My second favorite is Hocus Pocus. It is truly enchanting and has become a family tradition to watch every year. It might be scary for little kids. It’s recommended for 10 and above.
Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie is a Winnie Pooh and friends adventure that is sure to delight for smaller children. It is recommended for kids 3 and above.
Super Monsters Save Halloween is made for kids 4+ and is fun making the traditional monsters more fun and not really scary. It is only a half hour long.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest. If your kids or grandkids are Curious George fans, they will love this. It is recommended for ages 3-101.
I personally am a huge fan of Wallace and Gromit, so I’ve made it a tradition to see Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. It’s recommended for 7+ ages.
Another favorite is Halloweentown starring Debbie Reynolds as the wise and wonderful grandmother who happens to be a witch. For ages 7+.
Every year I watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown based on the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz. It’s for ages 6+.
David Bowie was the perfect Goblin King in Labyrinth. Jim Henson’s puppet creatures fills this enchanting world. It’s recommended for ages 8+.
Even though there may be more that should be on this list, I’ve chose Kiki’s Delivery Service animated by Studio Ghibli. It proves what a Good Witch can do. It is recommended for 5 and up.
That’s my list. If you would like to add some for our readers, please, put your movie choice in the commend box.
Please, be safe for Halloween and always.

The Same
I’ve spent a lot of time writing about fear and our minds. My blog today was inspired by this and all my conversations of late (I spend all my days talking to people from all walks of life)—all the fear around us and all the fear that consumes us. Fear of what is different or unknown. Fear of what we assume will be an outcome or a result of certain behavior. Fear we are told we must have because our lives will change.
Today, I don’t want to focus on fear of any of these things, but I actually want to focus on the positive. I do this with my son a lot as he can be a bit of a pessimist and while I don’t expect to ever want to or even fully change him, I want him to be able to see multiple viewpoints… which actually brings me to the positive. We live in a world of differences in so many ways—animals, plants, people, places, colors, etc. and they are all so beautiful and interesting. We don’t see everything the same way and that only adds to our unique qualities. Each of us may have different foods we prefer or clothes we like. We may have music that just jives with us or perhaps we prefer to watch a specific genre of movies. This is diversity, these are differences and how boring would our world be without them?
I grew up in Virginia and spent the first 20+ years of my life complaining about rain and then I moved out to the desert for 10+ years and I began to appreciate what I had known and had. In the desert, I got tired of the sun and monotony of a blue sky. There were other things to admire but bottomline, I really began to understand why variety and change and differences are what make this world so wonderful.
So this blog is simply my opinion and not forced on anyone in the least. But I’d ask that you consider a monotonous world full of the same—the same meals everyday, the same scenery, the same music and the same movies, the same weather and everyone who agrees with us… is this really what you want?
Have a safe week and happy writing!

The Moon Festival by Susan Hanniford Crowley
What is the purpose of the Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival?
It is a harvest celebration and is celebrated in China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
How do you celebrate?
I guess it depends on where you are.
China , Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines enjoy lighting lanterns and dragon dances.
In China, they will celebrate from Oct. 1st to the 8th. It also happens to fall on the China National Day which celebrates from Oct. 1st to the 7th. It’s a time for families to get together for meals and traveling to relatives to visit.
In Japan, it is both a religious and cultural celebration. The Chinese introduced the Festival to “Japan 1,000 years ago”. It is celebrated “on the 15th day of the 8th month of the traditional Japanese lunisolar calendar”. Visit https://www.chinahighlights.com/festivals/mid-autumn-festival-in-japan.htm for more information.
It is tradition in Japan to express thanks to the Moon for the harvest, decorate your roof with pampas grass to ward off spirit, burn incense and say a prayer for happiness, and make delicious things to eat. Many shrines will give performances. Chinatowns will perform the Lion Dance.
In Singapore, they are hanging lanterns and send moon cakes to family, friends, and colleagues to express thanks. During this time, main streets become bazzars filled with amazing things and festival foods. In the past there have been Mass Lantern Walks in the evening, performances, and dancing. Maybe even a dragon dance.
In Vietnam, it’s all about the children. Parents buy lanterns, funny masks, and sweet treats for them. The watch the Lion Dance Parade and hang carp shaped lanterns.
What have I learned from the Moon Festival?
I love the idea of a harvest celebration and sharing gratitude for what you have. Here’s a link to a recipe from the China Sichuan Food website. https://www.chinasichuanfood.com/chinese-moon-cake-traditional-version/
Please, be safe! Enjoy life! There is more to come in all our lives! I hear for Halloween we wil have a Blue Moon!

For The Love Of…Excerpts #5 by Artemis Crow
For your reading pleasure, here is the opening scene in the fifth book in the Zodiac Assassins series, “Gemini Asunder”. Enjoy!
———————-
City of Portam, Hell
Lilith paced her expansive suite. Her impatience drove her back and forth, the weight of her floor-length, red hair already starting a headache at the base of her neck. She swiped at the rich, red and gold, brocade curtains—so long that they puddled on the floor—with each pass. It was that or amuse herself with a Portamarian, but strangely she wasn’t in the mood to soil her hands with blood and odium, nor had a craving for the shrieking.
Finally, a small tap on her door stopped her. “Enter.”
A servant woman approached, head down, her sparse, white hair exposing a pale, freckled scalp. “The message has arrived.”
She held out a small bit of linen.
Lilith snatched the cloth and rubbed it between her fingers. This was Portam, the only city in the realm of Hell; paper wasn’t an option.
She read the words and smiled. “Leona did the impossible. She survived the journey through Hell and set the Master free.”
She tossed the cloth in the fire and watched the words burn; funny how a few letters placed in the right order could have such power.
“Tell the guard it’s time.”
“Time, my queen?”
“To prepare the dragons for release.”
The servant finally looked up at Lilith, her head craned back to see the queen’s face so far above her own. “Which ones and how many?”
Smart woman.
Very few of Portam’s souls had figured out the differences between dragons living among them.
“All of the grown black dragons, but none of the others, especially not the hatchery; the babies are far too young to survive.”
Hopefully, the strong will make it.
The servant turned to leave.
“Wait. Release her as well.”
“The white?”
“Yes, she is powerful and clever.”
“Perhaps too clever to obey.”
“True, but I have something she wants very badly. She will do as I command.”
“And the red?” the servant whispered. “You have spoken of him many times recently.”
Lilith looked past the servant to the huge tapestry hanging on the wall. Woven centuries earlier, it depicted a medieval battle scene of blood and slaughter. Dead knights surrounded a red dragon; above the beast, three Furies stared down, looking for signs of human life.
“No, not the red. Not yet.”
The servant ran off.
Lilith closed her eyes and smiled.
Leona.
She touched her lips and recalled her visit with the Zodiac female. The young woman had reminded Lilith of herself at that age so full of anger and bursting for a fight, with a mind wide open to exploration by anyone powerful enough, subtle enough.
And, oh, the information she had gleaned while traipsing about the girl’s mind: Leona’s past—so filled with boring angst—the Zodiacs, their power…and the potential of that power begging to be fulfilled and exploited.
By me.
Lilith eased into a chair on the balcony outside her suite. Mud dropped in great globs from the turrets, splatting on the buildings and the souls below, but her balcony was pristine. That was her servants’ first priority: Portam rises from the mud—clean Lilith’s balcony. They might be denizens of Hell, but there was no need to live in a sty like a pig.
She waved a hand, calling an elderly servant over to brush her long hair.
“Will it be soon?” she asked the old woman who had served her for centuries.
“Any time now, ma petite.”
“My little one? After all these years, you still feel the need to call me that? With me towering over you.”
“You will always be ma petite to me.” The woman set the brush down. “Hair up or down today?”
“Why don’t you take the shears to it? I feel no need for hair.”
Lilith swept the mane forward with a hand. The weight of it was a headache-inducing burden; soon she would have a migraine.
“We’ve tried that countless times and it always grows back within hours.”
Lilith heaved a sigh. “It is a punishment almost as tedious as being stuck here.”
“Then it’s good the tedium is about to be broken.”
Lilith dropped her hair and looked out across Hell’s lone city. She’d ruled it for an eon, had been bored to tears for most of that time. Thankfully, the servant was correct. Leona’s success had triggered a long-sought change. The time of inaction was over.
A deep rumble echoed through the air, blowing over Lilith and her servant, the force lifting a few strands of hair.
Lilith leaned forward. “Yes, it is.”
She saw wing tips first. Thick webs of white skin spanning between long bones ending in sharp claws.
Another flap.
The tips disappeared for a moment then reappeared along with more of the wings.
Flap.
A huge, pearlescent, white-scaled head appeared, triangular like a venomous snake, craggy, with long, razor-sharp teeth and blue eyes.
Flap.
The white dragon’s full body broke free of the heavy mud and jetted into the sky. A scream pierced the air.
“Brilliant,” Lilith said under her breath.
More dragons—smaller than the white with black scales and red eyes—punched through the muck and into the air until the majority of Portam’s greatest protection circled the city, waiting.
“So many?” the servant said.
“Yes, but far from all.”
Lilith stood and walked to the carved, stone railing.
“And our safety?”
Lilith gripped the stone and squeezed to control her ire. “The girl succeeded; he is free. We don’t need so much protection anymore.”
“Portam without the white; I never thought I’d see the day when even one of the seraphim would be freed.”
“Fallen seraphim. Do not give them greater import than they deserve. They fell just as surely as their brethren angels and Lucifer did.” Lilith watched the white dragon approach. “She is the cleverest of them all; if anyone can find what I seek, it will be her.”
The old woman stood next to her queen, putting them on an equal level that Lilith would never have tolerated from anyone else. “Yet, who will the dragons serve in the end? Your husband, your son, or your former lover?”
“Asmodeus has his demons; Cain will soon have his witches. And Lucifer? Well, he always seems to find a way despite being half-buried in ice. No, I don’t think they will serve one of them.”
Lilith watched the dragons roll and twist in the air. “Perhaps the dragons will tolerate my hand ruling them; I have kept them safe and wonderfully fed these many millennia. Giving them a haven to regroup and reproduce in a number far greater than they’ve ever known.”
“If that is not enough to secure their loyalty?”
“I have my Ardat Lili.” Lilith’s eyes narrowed. “And a hell of a grudge to fuel me.”
She raised her hands to what passed for sky in Hell.
The white dragon screamed, sleet and snow jetting out of her mouth and nostrils.
“You know what to do,” Lilith bellowed.
The group of dragons roared as one, belching fire and ice, before flying away.
Lilith dropped her arms. “But this will all be for naught if they can’t rise to the Overworld.”

A Year Not Quite Over and An Excerpt from A Vampire for Christmas by Susan Hanniford Crowley
Autumn is coming!
2020 has been a hard year for everyone.
Prior to, I had a year (Jan. 2019-Feb. 2020) of fighting cancer. Most of the time, I was in seclusion whenever my immune system was compromised, which was often. Whenever my doc said that my immune system was good, I saw my grandchildren and went to church. That wasn’t as frequent as I would have liked, but I was grateful for every moment. I took the last chemo drug intravenously on February 15.
The following week, I went out to a beautiful breakfast buffet with my family including grandchildren.
A very short time later the pandemic was recognized in the USA, and the shutdown happened. People were dying. New information seemed to come out about the coronavirus every day. I’m in the high-risk group, so I ended up secluded again.
Currently, I can’t go into houses, not even my daughter’s home. I can’t go into any small venues, restaurants, or hotels.
What do I do? Facetime a lot. Call. Text. I was eating too much. I gained 40 lbs. during the shutdown. Now I’m slowly losing weight. YAY! I can see the grandkids as they play in their yard. YAY!
I’ve also been writing. My New Adult dragon book is in editing now. Have your fingers crossed, that it comes out before Christmas. I’m working on a cancer survival book. While I was undergoing chemo, I started two books. One is a Young Adult vampire book and the other would be Book 4 in my current series Arnhem Knights of New York and it’s set in Iceland mostly.
I am so jazzed by what I’m writing.
Here for your delight is an excerpt from A Vampire for Christmas, Book 3 in the Vampires in Manhattan series.
*
“No,” Georgia whimpered at the hand reaching into the window display, yanking out the [image error]coat she’d stared at every day for three weeks–the thick brown and black, faux fur coat with the black hood. None of the other coats compared to that one with its elegant lines and obvious warmth. Georgia’s own coat was shabby. She shivered.
If only her credit cards weren’t maxed out. A tear streamed down her cheek before freezing on her face.
Then she saw the reflection. Every time she stopped at this window, his reflection would be there staring back. He stood about two feet behind her, so the image was shadowed. At first, she reasoned that perhaps he lived in the neighborhood and it was a coincidence. Maybe he was looking at coats for his mother or girlfriend. Maybe he was a stalker. She turned to leave.
Someone tapped her on the shoulder. Georgia gripped her bag strap and turned, then looked up. He was tall, broad shouldered, and compassion made his face kind. Bright green eyes gazed into hers. His warm brown hair was cut conservatively, which matched the new, dark brown coat.
“Are you all right?”
“Yes. I’m fine. Thank you.”
“You’re not fine. Please, let me help you.”
Instantly, she burst into a run and didn’t stop until she reached the donut shop across from her apartment. Sitting at a table, Georgia peeked through the window. He hadn’t followed her. Snowflakes floated down obscuring her vision. Maybe she overreacted. Maybe not. You couldn’t be too careful in New York. She got up and went to the counter to order coffee and donuts to go.
When she stepped outside again, the lights had come on up and down the street. It was beginning to look like Christmas. It could be so magical if it wasn’t so sad. Georgia figured that she would run out of money by New Year’s. What a way to start the New Year. Jobless. Homeless. Broke.
Georgia looked up and down the street but saw no sign of the man from the reflection and decided it was safe to cross the street to her apartment.
As she unlocked the building door, her landlady with iron-gray hair stood there. “Good evening, Georgia.”
“Hi, Mrs. Polasky.”
“Do you have that rent money for me?”
Georgia shuffled in her purse and took out a check and held it out. “Here it is.”
The woman took it. “That’s good. Have a Happy Christmas.” Then she went back into her apartment and slammed the door.
Last check, thought Georgia. She didn’t want to tell her. Maybe she could hold out again until halfway through the month to tell her landlady. Maybe something wonderful would happen. Maybe instead of snow, money would fall from the sky.
Georgia pressed the button for the elevator when her landlady’s door opened. “Oh, Georgia, a courier came by with this package for you. I almost forgot.”
It was a large, rectangular box with a fancy bow. The tag on the box had her name. “Thank you.”
The elevator doors opened and Georgia walked in. As soon as the doors closed, she examined the box more closely. It was heavy, a woven white, but bore no markings other than the tag. The bow was a deep green. Before she could open it, the elevator had reached the fifth floor and she got out. Georgia hurried to her door, unlocked it, opened it, and locked it behind her just as fast.

Want to know what’s inside that box? A Vampire for Christmas is available in Kindle

A Year in Review…Thus Far
I sat this week scrolling through the titles of my blogs this year and I had to laugh. They are full of words like panic, fear, gratitude, little wins, etc. It is as if one could read my and probably many folks emotions as we’ve ridden through 2020.
I realize the year is not done yet and if anything, I believe it is accurate to say that many more events are yet to come. Still, 2020 is one for the books and a year in which we were absolutely made to feel. These emotions may have ranged from shock to fear to anger to surprise to fear… you get the point, there has been an air of unpredictability and the thought at time that nothing more could happen. And yet, we also realize that at times while life could be better, it could also be worse.
So what is the point of all this? The truth is I don’t have that answer. I’m not. Sure any of us do. Perhaps in the future we will look back and see a reason (or not) things happened the way they did. What we do know after this year in review thus far is that it has happened and we can probably all say we’ve learned something. I know I’ve come to learn what is more important and counts more for me in life. What have you learned after this near year in review?
Happy writing this week!

Spooky Coffee Beans Paranormal-Scope
The secret is out. You can make delicious coffee from whole beans without grinding them up. Have you considered that coffee beans after they’ve been brewed can be read much like tea leaves? Let’s see what they have to say.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Spooky Coffee Beans say that your feelings are too easily aroused right now for good and bad. Take a breath and think things out a bit before saying a word.
Taurus:
Spooky Coffee Beans admires your night attire but don’t wear it all day long. You will get past this slump. A new day presents new opportunities.
Gemini:
Spooky Coffee Beans love being fragrant in a beautiful home. It’s time to redecorate!
Cancer:
Spooky Coffee Beans admire coffee drinkers of honor. Before doing anything, think, and then consider doing the right action.
Leo:
Spooky Coffee Beans know that friends and family are important. Spend more time with those you love, even if it’s on Facetime.
Virgo:
Spooky Coffee Beans know to drop the past and embrace future possibilities. Do the same.
Libra:
Spooky Coffee Beans know that people are on edge right now. Lay low from those with negative words and thoughts.
Scorpio:
Spooky Coffee Beans are always honest and refreshing. Be honest most with those you hold dearest.
Sagittarius:
Spooky Coffee Beans reveal that you can’t always avoid unpleasantness. Look out for yourself and your future.
Capricorn:
Spooky Coffee Beans say that time is on your side. But do things to protect yourself and your savings regardless.
Aquarius:
Spooky Coffee Beans say go with your feelings. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.
Pisces:
Spooky Coffee Beans love a good coffee sit down with a trusted friend. Express your concerns and get a new view.
