Great Expectations Are They Great Enough?
Im not sure Ive ever blogged about this but I am a podcast junkie. I love them! And some of my favorite podcasts Ive discovered via NPR. Most recently I listened to a podcast called Invisibilia which discussed how our expectations of each other can really affect our performance. Sound crazy? I highly recommend you check it out.
A large portion of an episode called How to Become Batman is dedicated to telling the story of Daniel Kish, President of World Access for the Blind and an expert in echolocation. The truth is that for many of us listening to Daniels story is amazing, but what Daniel argues is that it shouldnt bebasically if we (society) would simply adjust our expectations we have for those who are blind, they would be able to achieve more.
I know the jury is still out on this but I couldnt help but turn the thought over in my mind, wondering if I am expecting enough from my children or even myself. Im not sure it even works when we are dealing with our own introspective thoughts, but Id have to think there is something to it. Think of the pep talks we give ourselves or what we do as we are trying to pull ourselves out of a funk. It doesnt always work but that could be due to many factors.
So where am I going with this? I guess Im looking out at a lot of unhappy people out there and I have to ask myself, what they are expecting. What do each of us want out of life and are we setting our sights on the goals. Do we truly expect that well reach them? If not, perhaps our expectations arent quite where they should be.
Happy writing this week and whatever your plans or expectations, reach for the stars!

Ad for RT on the go and Translations for Burns Like Fire Are Almost Ready! by Mandy Rosko
Okay, I need to take in a deep breath because, wow, I’m spending a ton of money lately on advertising and writing costs.
The cost to translation my short novel into German, after Canadian to American conversion, worked itself up to be almost two grand, and today I sent off a quick email to the lady at RT Magazine, hoping to snag a spot for the issue that will come out in time for The Romantic Times Convention in Dallas. I’m getting only the 1/4 page ad, but it will still work itself up to be a pretty penny.
@_@ I think now is about the time that I need to make myself a budget on what I can and can’t spend on marketing. I mean, I told myself that this was going to be the year that I did more marketing than ever before, which seemed easy enough since I do almost no marketing at all, but that’s quite a bit of money to spend in just one day.
My past self who used to work as a waitress part time is shrieking inside of my head, lol. I’m also going to take my driver’s test tomorrow, and hopefully I don’t fail it again. Stress abound and hoping I don’t end up crashing!
Anyway! On to happier news, the translations for Burns Like Fire are done! Woot! All I have to do is get the back blurb ready and I can take this sucker on over to Amazon.de :3 I’m so excited for that. I just have to get the new cover ready and then I can upload it for pre-order, and my last pre-order sales for The Princess’ Dragon Lord did pretty well, so I got quite a few readers over there now with just the one book :)
Other happy news is that next month, the sequel to Burns Like Fire will finally be available next month. A Shock To Your System. I’m super excited about this one and figured that I’d really quickly show off the cover:
Isn’t it great? :3 I can’t wait to get this one into print. It’s going through one last beta reader, and then I can get the printed file set up. I’m also going to be handing this baby out for free in a week or so before the actual release date for some honest reviews. Still trying to think about how I’m going to do that, but for now, anyone who wants on the list of people who will get early access can sign up for my super cool street team ;) It’s small right now, but everyone on it will definitely get an early proof copy.
That’s it for now! Hopefully I will have more news for you later on this super cool book (can you tell I’m excited?)
Cheers
xoxo

The Sunlit Paranormal-Scope
Being snowed in after snowed in after snowed in, everyone I know is feeling sad to depressed. We need sunlight and flowers and hugs. Keep wishing. Wishes do come true!
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
Hobbits turn to comfort food when days are gray. Donuts are good too. Eclairs are better.
Taurus:
Goblins feel better when they review their finances. It’s a good time. Might as well set up for taxes early and get an early return.
Gemini:
Vampires avoid the sunlight. Some people prefer being beyond the limelight. There is something romantic and magical about moonlight on snow. Enjoy your private time.
Cancer:
Shapeshifters care about health. Choose good food and eat for health this week to feel better.
Leo:
Dragons are into cuddling with those close. Plan an small party for friends.
Virgo:
Elves nurture plants for a reason. They find them energizing. Bring more plants into your home.
Libra:
Faeries are playful. Playing restores us. Find a game that you can play with others or online with others. Give yourself the right to play.
Scorpio:
Dragons have a sweet tooth. The trick is finding out which one. LOL Do not stick your head in a dragon’s mouth. Enjoy a treat, but don’t be fool hardy.
Sagittarius:
Pixies are incorrigible. Make time to be silly. Go to a funny movie. You need to relax more.
Capricorn:
Werewolves are into rub downs. Massage is good for the body and spirit. Restore your energy. It’s time to take better care of yourself.
Aquarius:
Trolls have come out from under the bridge. The dark sometimes bring out the darkness in people. Be cautious in your dealings with others this week.
Pisces:
Faeries love flowers. Give yourself flowers. Bring more plants into your home and plant some from flower seeds in a pot. Their bright colors will cheer your gray days.

F is for Fifty Shades of Grey
Yes, Im actually going there, or at least partly. I have not read Fifty Shades nor have I seen the movie. I know only that it started out as fan fiction for Twilight, it was turned into a book that explores a BDSM lifestyle (of some sort), and has generated billions of dollars between the three books and now the movie that opened last week.
Why have I decided not to read the books or see the movie? Originally I was turned off by all the hoopla touting the books. Especially after hearing multiple times that the books were not well written. That may be the biggest turn off for me, no matter the subject matter. And I admit to a certain curiosity about them. I love a good erotic novel and Im interested in reading about the BDSM lifestyleIve even written a little bit about it as well. But that the writing might not be good now turns me off more than anything about a book.
Interestingly enough, Ive heard the same thing about the Twilight series. And I have read that series actually, multiple times. My daughter was a big fan and wanted me to read it. I found the characters fascinating and the plot kept me turning pages and engaged throughout. Of course, I read it before I became a writer in 2009. Since then I have not re-read it, because Ive become more aware of what is good or bad in a writing style and I didnt want to be disappointed, although I have watched the movies and enjoyed them many times. So the plot and characters do hold up, it seems.
Still, I am intrigued by Fifty Shades. My daughter, the one who loved Twilight, has both read the Fifty Shades books and seen the movie. When I asked her how it was she said pretty good, but her concern was that a lot of the scenes had been cut and she hated the fact that Ana seemed less intelligent than in the book. As for the sex scenes, she said there was a lot of talking during those scenes in the movie theatre. When I asked her why, she said otherwise it would have been like watching porno with 60 other people. I somehow think that was not the intent of the film, but now I fear that I will have to see it just to judge for myself.
Fifty Shades of Grey has also sparked a huge sea of jokes poking fun at the books. My favorite one, which is a cartoon, I find to be just a whole lot of fun. Hope you enjoy it too.
And by the way, how do you weigh in on Fifty Shades?

Looking for A Hero? Who Would You Choose? By Susan Hanniford Crowley
When creating a hero for a novel, I look for certain traits. I like a brave guy. If he’s strong, it’s a plus. I have a leaning toward the smart guys. It’s not bad if he’s great looking. If he genuinely loves the heroine, I like to see how he expresses it. So vote now for the one you think is the most heroic. I’d love to hear why, so please, write in the comments.

My First Book Signing (In A Surprising Place) by Stacy Hoff
My first ever book signing is coming up. Gulp! I am a little surprised by how nervous I am. Being an attorney, I am usually quite comfortable with public speaking. This will be the first time, however, when the words I speak are personal to me. If I wear leg braces maybe I won’t actually fall down when I pass out.
I’m sure that reading out loud the pages from my debut contemporary romance novel, DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES will be exciting. But it’s also going to be intimdating. And a bit overwhelming.
And yet, it will be a celebration, because my newest novel, LAWFULLY YOURS, will be out by the date of this event, March 14th, 2015. (Cover reveal for Lawfully Yours next Friday, 2/27, right here on this blog).
How this book signing opportunity happened is truly amazing. I had been talking about my book (soon to be “books”) with my wonderful hair stylist, Joy. I have been going to Joy for years at the fabulous salon where she works. (Any why not? No one else would want to tame the snarling beast that is my hair.)I found out that she, and the rest of the stylists, manicurists, and reception staff were reading my book! The owner of the salon, Stan, wanted me to come in to the salon off-hours to do a book reading and signing.
After I picked my jaw off the floor, the realization of what my salon was doing for me really kicked in. Imagine a small business offering to me launch me, in the career I love.
Wow. And to think I would have kept going to this salon forever, anyway.
I hope all of you get to meet the wonderful, supportive folks in the beautiful salon I regularly frequent. If you choose to go during my book signing (and I hope you do!) there will be fabulous appetizers, wine, and mereading the pages of DESIRE while tying not to faint. (This event is free to attend.)

What I’ve Learned: Secret 7 – How Do You Engage in Whimsey? by Susan Hanniford Crowley
When writing a novel, getting too serious can put too much pressure on you. Do the research. Do the work. Nail your grammar and spelling. But when you’re worn out, indulge in episodes of whimsey.

What? You’re not up to getting a new pet? That’s understandable. Whether you’re a writer or have another very busy occupation, caring for a dragon will keep you on your toes. They are equipment intensive. You need oven mitts. They might chase the other pets in the house. Until they are all acquainted, it’s best to separate them from the newcomer. You will need several fire extinguishers. Oh, and you’ll want to get a little dragon bed. I hear they cry for several nights because they’re scared. A blanket, hot water bottle and a ticking clock might comfort them, but for goodness sakes make sure that alarm is turned off. You don’t want to scare your little dragon and burn the house down.
When you wake up in the morning, don’t be alarmed to find him sleeping on your pillow next to your head. You are the comfort person. I hear dragons when they choose their person are devoted. Lucky you!
See how fun whimsey can be. Now you! How do you engage in whimsey?

Go For the Goal
We are our own worst enemies. I’m my biggest critic. How many times have you heard or said that and how true is it? In my opinion and life experience these statements are often more true than not. It’s unfortunate as life is so short (another cliche but very true statement) and we spend so much of it worrying and planning for a better future– one which may never come for some of us.
I know. I work in finance and talk to peopl about their retirement all the time. I was recently referred to a blog by a Mr. Money Mustache to gain tips on saving and the possibility of early retirement. His posts are quite fascinating not only due to the tips and practices he shares but for the utter discipline he and his family implement to reach their goals. Unfortunately, this is something many of us lack. The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way. It just requires a change of mind and strong discipline on each of our parts.
Now I’ll pause as you may be wondering at this point what I am talking about. I’m talking about whatever it is in each of our lives that we want AND whatever it is that might be holding us back from achieving what we want. If you want to write a book but don’t think you have the skills, join a critique group and take some classes. If you want to find a new job and have it be something you love, put yourself out there. Now I’m not say to take crazy risks especially if others depend on you, but you can take calculated risks and make progress toward your goals. Moral of the story, there are so many obstacles out in the world, don’t add yourself to the mix. Go for what you want and happiness will follow.
I know, I can talk up writing fortune cookies for a living! Have a great week and happy writing.

Billionaire Romances and Why I’m Interested by Mandy Rosko
Lately I’ve been on something of a mission. Aside from trying to put together my new bookshelves (which look so beyond awesome, by the way), getting my word count in for the day, and trying to read more books this year than I did last year (it was pitiful), I’ve also taken an interest in Billionaire romances. Whenever I see one on sale or free on Amazon, lately I’ve been picking them up. They’re slightly harder to find on Bookoutlet, or maybe I’ve just not been seeing them, but Harlequin seems to have enough of them in stock that I’m never short on books to read.
Not to mention that if you look on ebay right now for a lot of Harlequin Romances, you’ll see boxes and boxes of them all over the place. I seriously want to pick a couple of them up right now just to have them all to go through :3 Boxes of books sounds like a lot of fun. I don’t know why I never thought to do this. I feel like I’ve just discovered an amazing treasure trove of books that’s been right under my nose.
Now, as for the reason why I’m getting into the idea of Billionaire romances, well, I’m not sure. Other than the fact that I hear it’s an interesting writing market to be in, my curiosity’s been piqued. I want to read through them to see what the appeal is, to see if I can even write it, and find out what’s not being done in the books that I might be able to get away with in self publishing. That part’s always fun :)
Why do you read Billionaire, Millionaire, or Tycoon Romances? I should probably also throw in Sheikhs, Princes and King Romances in there as well since they’re usually wealthy enough to sweep a heroine off her feet. What draws you to them? What do you like about them, and better still, does anyone reading this have an absolute favorite book that’s on their keeper shelf :) I’d be willing to read over that one. Until then, I’ll be searching out for some favorites of my own.
Cheers,
~Mandy Rosko
