Don’t Bathe the Computer…by Heather Novak

Happy Thursday!

Since my edits are due Thanksgiving week, today’s blog post is going to be short but funny. This true story as told to me by an IT guy*:

My friend called me up and said, “Hey, Ryan! My computer has a virus on it. What should I do?”

I sighed. “We’ll have to clean it. I’ll be over in a few hours to help.”

When I arrived a few hours later, a computer was on his kitchen table. It was spotless, like it had just come out of a box. Confused, I asked, “Did you get a new computer?”

He chuckled. “Doesn’t it look great? No, I just put it in the bathtub to clean it like you suggested.”

I stared in horror, looking from him to the computer. I cleared my throat twice before I could speak. “D-d-did you submerse the entire thing?”

He frowned at me. “Of course, how else would I clean it? I used bar soap and a washcloth.”

My head was spinning. I walked over to the computer to take a look at the damage. Maybe there was still a way to save it. “Uh, Dave, you didn’t try to turn it on yet, did you?”

“Oh, yes,” he said, nodding. “Soon as I got it out of the tub, I wanted to check if it was fixed, you know, in case you didn’t need to come over. Made a popping sound and shut off. Wasn’t sure if that was a sign it was working.”

Clenching my jaw against the wave of expletives threatening to spill out, I pulled the casing off the computer to examine the motherboard. Everything was completely fried. “I’m sorry Dave, but you’re going to need a new computer.”

He stared at me dumbfounded. “But…but why?”

Trying to make him feel better, I gripped his shoulder and said, “Because this one wasn’t a waterproof model.” Then with a smile, I left.

Good luck with your NaNoWriMo friends! Remember, don’t bathe your computers…unless they’re waterproof.

Sieze What You Want

Carpe Diem! Seize the Day! Some wise words even if they’ve become somewhat cliche. I had a co-worker come by this week and ask me if I’ve ever sat in a room and looked around and wondered why I was there or why I feel so out of place. My mind was shouting of course I have, but the truth is that I’m sure many of us have felt this way at some time or the other.

My co-worker is bored, going through the motions of life with no understanding of why or his purpose. I’ve been there and even now I have moments when I have to talk myself into moving forward, but the difference is I’ve formed goals to move towards and even if they seem a ways off at times, I still have a light at the end of my tunnel. I’m working towards a better now, a better future and a better me.

So what about my co-worker? Well, like all of us, he has to choose what will make him happy. It isn’t easy and I give huge kudos to those bold enough to take the risk and step towards longer term and broader happiness. My husband told me about a co-worker this week who took a job elsewhere. She wants to go where she’d love to live and doesn’t want to be complacent in either her work or outside life. I loved hearing this and couldn’t help admiring her for taking that next step. Don’t get me wrong. I realize it isn’t always so simple. I, like my co-worker, have kids. It may take some creativity and reflection on our parts but it isn’t impossible to achieve what we want. The hard part is deciding and taking that first step.

Happy writing this week!

One Week Until Release! by Mandy Rosko

I can’t believe there’s only a week left until A Very Alpha Christmas is released. A couple of times it dropped down into Amazon’s Top 100 Paid Best Seller list, and it’s held the #1 Seller in Vampires a few times as well. I think on Amazon’s list it got as low as 60. That’s pretty good!

http://tamingseries.com/alphaxmas/

And now there’s kitties on the advertising images. Look at this one!

unwrap

I love how this looks. It’s too cute! Lol, I also asked my big brother to pre-order a copy. He laughingly did it since I’m so hyper about this. I think he’ll be putting it on his wife’s account for her to read, though. Not much of a romance reader, my brother :D

Anyway, I wouldn’t be doing my part in the series without pimping this awesome set. Which is extra awesome because, you know, I’m in it. Lol, kidding.

Anyway! It’s 26 stories, all brand new, and the Pre-order is at 99 cents USD. I’m not sure when it will happen, but the price will rise shortly after the release day, so it is best to pick this up before that happens.

See you next week when I gush about how awesome it is that this bad boy was released! Woot!

A Time Travel Paranormal-Scope

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

Falling down the rabbit hole means new opportunities coming your way. Beware what you eat.

Taurus:

Standing stones are beautiful in the moonlight. But get to know a new friend better before touching.

Gemini:

Give yourself more time to enjoy your life. Be careful for those close to you and let them know.

Cancer:

Wardrobes can be wonderful. Fill yours with wondrous things but it you find a lamp in the forest back out slowly.

Leo:

Harry used a Pensive to examine the past. Leave the past alone. Keep the best parts.

Virgo:

Librarians know more than you think. Go antiquing and find a treasure.

Libra:

A time machine won’t solve your problems. Don’t dwell on them either. Time to move on.

Scorpio:

You’re reached a threshold in your life. Exciting times ahead.

Sagittarius:

So you don’t drive a DeLorean. The future is still yours. Take the scenic route and don’t bypass the attractions.

Capricorn:

Walk through the Star Gate and make this time yours. Wondrous things are happening in your life.

Aquarius:

You don’t need Hermoine’s Time Turner to slow things down. Just make the decision that you deserve more time to yourself and the things you enjoy.

Pisces:

Don’t fear surprises, except in Sleepy Hollow. Embrace surprises coming your way.

‘Tis the Season: Christmas in the Regency

I just returned home after a whirlwind trip to Memphis to see my daughter in her first University of Memphis production. Very exciting—I hadn’t seen her except thru Skype since August. We had a great, if short, visit and now I’m looking forward to her return home for Christmas.

Christmas is literally just around the corner. And I am pushing myself to finish and release a Christmas novella that I’ve been working on for two years now. It’s called Beneath the Mistletoe, and is a sweet Regency full of Christmas traditions from two hundred years ago. And therein lies the rub with the book: Christmas during the Regency period was not at all like the Christmas celebrations we have today.

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS DINNERWhile doing my research, I found out that most of our current ideas about how to celebrate Christmas originated in the Victorian era, or were simply not fashionable during the Regency. The use of a Christmas tree, for example, comes from Germany and Queen Charlotte introduced it at the palace beginning in 1800. The tradition did not catch on, however, until Victoria’s reign.

Which made writing about a Regency Christmas a bit more challenging. I found the celebrants of a Regency Christmas often had house parties during Christmastide and decorated with greenery, including a ball of mistletoe. Couples would kiss under the ball (on the cheek unless they were planning on getting married) and then cut one of the little white balls off the larger mass of mistletoe. Once all the white balls were gone, the mistletoe ball was spent.

I’m using this tradition to form the basis of my story:

Miss Jenny Crowley, upon turning eighteen, is informed that instead of having her long awaited Season in London, she is to marry to Alexander Isley, the neighbor’s son whom she grew up with. When Jenny protests she will not marry Alec, her aunt invites her to a Christmas house party for a Christmas season where she can meet eligible young men and hopefully fall in love. Jenny enjoys the new Christmas traditions at her aunt’s home, especially those surrounding the mistletoe ball. She’s very attracted to the dashing Lord Somersby and is contemplating receiving her first kiss under the mistletoe from him. When Alec puts in an appearance, however, suddenly all bets are off as the two men all wrapped upsquare off in hopes of winning her affection beneath the mistletoe.

Beneath the Mistletoe is a much expanded and changed version of my original short, short story, ‘Tis the Season, available now in my Christmas collection All Wrapped Up on Amazon. You can look for Beneath the Mistletoe in late November/early December.

Finding A Surprise – Vampires, Shifters, Elves, Leprechauns, Oh My!

While I’m ill, I’m supposed to be resting. I was poking around on my computer, taking a break from doing edits. I came across a folder of files transferred from my last computer.  Lo and behold there it was. The copy of the 4th book in my original series Vampires in Manhattan, Vampire in the Basement. It was half way formated for Kindle. So I started working on the other half. What’s more I found the cover that was gifted to me by Tease Publishing when they closed. So now I have two immediate projects. Finish my edits for the new novel which are half done and finish the formatting for this book.

vampireinthebasement1-2Coming soon! My supernatural romance romp –Vampire in the Basement!  What happened to Gregor and Regina from When Love Survives?  This is the sequel where they go home to Maine for their great big supernatural wedding. Regina meets Gregor’s shapeshifter family. There are lots of surprises!

Authors’ Thoughts on Writing by Stacy Hoff

Stacy_Cartoon_v2Today, Passionate readers, I’m firing questions at several writers. Each author appears in the newly released anthology SEASON OF SURPRISES. And each one talks about their own experience writing short holiday stories. What’s it take to create? Find out!

By the way, tomorrow I’ll be blogging on BTS e-magazine about my own experience writing. (BTS emag is a great website geared toward book lovers.) Here’s the link, which will be live tomorrow, November 7th, 2015:  http://btsemag.com/location-location-location-by-stacy-hoff/

Season of Surprises KINDLE

Noelle’s Surprise by Merry Holly (a/k/a Marian Lanouette)

  Marian1

Marian, you write the romance anthology “Season of…” series, as well as mystery and romantic suspense. My question for you is how much do your characters differ between the genres?

Marian: The characters come to me in stories. Each one is an individual and develops as such. The biggest differences are their goals in a story I find. The cop in the mystery is seeking justice for the victim. The hero/heroine in a romance are looking to make that once in a lifetime connection, while dealing with everyday problems and life. Each has a set of values and morals that they can’t betray.

I love creating the villains though, they cross the lines that you and me live by each day.

Enticed by a Laird by Gerri Brousseau

GerriBrousseauSelf

When you wrote “The Yuletide Bride” in SEASON OF MAGIC, did you plan to write a sequel for the “Season of…” series?

Gerri: When I wrote “The Yuletide Bride,” the story of Stuart and Brianna, I had no idea the story of the Nelson family would blossom into a series, but when Marian invited me to be part of Season of Love, I realized I wasn’t finished telling their story. I also wondered if the readers would be interested to find out what became of the other family members. In “Puppy Love,” my contribution to SEASON OF LOVE, features Robert Nelson’s story and “Enticed by a Laird” features Esther and Angus. I have one more story to tell in the series. If you read The Yuletide Bride, you will remember Lady Roxanne. It is her story we have yet to hear.

Holiday Handbag Extravaganza by Vicki Batman

Vicki Batman

Of all the characters you have written, which one is your favorite?

Vicki: I have written many short stories. I particularly like some of the male heroes, like Officer “Witless” Witlock from Drive my Car, one I sold to the True Magazines in September 2010. He keeps writing tickets and our heroine keeps deliberately getting tickets to gain his attention.

So she is sentenced by her uncle, the judge, to attend driving school–with Officer Witlock. Lots of funny things happen involving combat boots, hot coffee, and a bad-ass wreck.

“Holiday Handbag Extravaganza” – Christmas Countdown is on! Hunk-a-licious customer, Jack Treadaway, pesters boutique owner, Callie Woods, to locate a vintage handbag for his mother. Too bad the wedge between them is his sister, the meanest girl in town.

I wrote this story because of my love for handbags and especially for the Enid Collins brand. Enid Collins bags are stenciled and jeweled and were sold by Neiman Marcus in the 60’s. Some are tote styled and others are wooden box bags. She did branch out into leather. She created a version for Christmas, although I don’t have that one. LOL

I have small feet which equals shoes that are hard to find for me. So I turned to handbags, picking them up for as little as $3.00 at flea markets. I have bought handmade ones at craft fairs and on ETSY. When I began to needlepoint, I bought stitched ones and have even stitched three for me. A friend suggested I blog about handbags and so began Handbag Monday where I feature mine and those of friends. I love it!

 CaraMarsi self

Her Frog Prince Holiday by Cara Marsi

Are any of your characters modeled after anyone in your life?

Cara: The main characters weren’t modeled after anyone in my life, although I sure would like to meet Chad. The secondary character of Gwen, the receptionist, is loosely modeled on me and named after one of my critique partners. Last year I had my hair streaked pink for a time, and my hair is short and blonde, all like Gwen. And I devour romance novels like Gwen, and I like to play matchmaker, like her, but I’ve never been successful. I don’t wear the cats-eye-glasses she does.

A Day for Destiny by Jane Gale

Jane Gale self

Jane, Please tells us a little about your writing process. Where do you write? Do you need quiet? Are you a plotter or panster? What’s your writing go to snack/drink?

Jane: My writing process is quite unorganized to be honest. I write when the mood strikes or when I feel that I haven’t made enough progress in a story as the week progresses. I sit at my computer with a scribble pad on hand and generate ideas, sketch out scenes, and plan the story arc. I typically plot the overall story while sketching out the character details as I go along, plugging in ideas at the spur of the moment while keeping tabs about everyone and every scene so I don’t confuse or give conflicting information. I love tugging at readers’ heartstrings, making them laugh, cry, get mad, and fall in love right along with the characters. As a writer, that’s my job, to immerse the reader. My goal is to have them fall in love with the storyline and want more of it.

Two female puppies are always my trusty companions while I write. The gentle sound of their adorable snoring and quiet barks while they run and frolic in their dreams completes the perfect semi-quiet environment I prefer to write in. To keep me on task, a strong mug of coffee is always nearby.

My latest creation, A Day for Destiny, is a sweet contemporary romance novella. Destiny’s life is turned upside down after receiving a court summons. A sexy and mysterious man arrives in town throwing her mundane life further into a tailspin. Destiny doesn’t know who to trust or if she should take a chance and risk it all.

Providence by Bobbi Lerman

In Season of Surprises you wrote a time travel story, Providence. What inspired you to write this?

Bobbi: I’ve always been fascinated by time travel since I can remember. I’m not sure what inspired this story.  I know I wanted to set it on New Year’s Eve.  I had my heroine, Amy Beale, who I knew was about to be arrested for art theft.  I started playing the “what if” game and before I knew it, my hero Nicholas Harrington was born. The only problem was Nicholas was living 100 years before my heroine. Once I had Amy and Nicholas I just knew their story was one that was meant to traverse time.

Turkish Delight by Madison West

What author has influenced your writing the most and why?

Madison: This is a tough question because it’s the equivalent of ‘What’s your favorite book?’ I’ve been an avid reader for as long as I can remember and I’ve been greatly influenced by W. Somerset Maugham, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Sandor Marai, Anne Tyler and Wally Lamb. These are the authors I always return to when I need some much needed writing inspiration. Each of these authors has their own unique writing style and is proof that there’s no singular way to write a good story.

My book is about a young woman named Amelia, who has had a traumatic past and learns to deal with it when she finds herself in the hauntingly beautiful Istanbul, Turkey. My goal in writing her story was to show readers that you can take a character that is fixed in their ways and unwilling to change, and place them in an environment and have them confront the issues that trouble them the most. I chose Istanbul because it’s a city that resides in two places–Europe and Asia. So in a way, Istanbul is a metaphor for Amelia’s life–she’s in two places when the story takes place: The past and present.

Holiday on the Home Front by Kristin Drew

Your story takes place in WWII. What drew you to that period in time?

Kristin: The 1940’s have always had a special, romantic draw for me. It was truly a time when an entire generation gave as much of themselves for one another as they possibly could, whether serving overseas, or helping the War effort at home. So many couples had to find ways to keep their romance alive with only sporadic letters to support their efforts, which is why letter writing plays such an important role in the romance between Betty and Van. It was a time when people put everything on the line, including their hearts.

Using NaNoWriMo to Make Better Habits by Heather Novak

Congratulations to Stacy Conrad for winning last week’s Halloween blog contest! She will be receiving an autographed book of her choice by one of my all time favorite authors, Elizabeth Heiter!

So blogospher, can ya’all believe it’s November?! By this point, you’re probably sick of hearing about NaNoWriMo. It’s okay, so am I. However, let’s talk about why it’s important and how to use it to create new habits.

It takes an average person a minimum of 18 days to form a new habit, at least per this article by Huff Post.  Writing needs to be a habit. If you don’t make the time for it, you will never finish that book.

Most people don’t have time to write. NaNo is the perfect excuse to figure out what you need to give up to make it happen.

I miss my friends and family terribly. I see them on holidays, and at weddings and funerals. I read episode recaps of television shows I don’t have time to watch. I get my book fill by listening to audiobooks in my car to and from work. I write on lunch and when I get home from work.

At the end of the day, I need to save whatever time I can for blogging, grocery shopping, and spending quality time with my man. This meant I had to break the habit of wasting time on the couch and get my butt to my computer chair. The month of September was very good to me. I broke my reality show habit and started writing. I finished three first drafts.

I want to challenge you to do the same. I’m challenging you to work on building up the habit of getting your butt into that chair. Do not read what you did the day before. Make notes when you stop for the day about what you wrote and where the story needs to pick up. Just sit and type.

My most important piece of advice: Allow your draft to suck.

First drafts will suck. That’s their job. I just spent weeks fretting over a novella because it was absolute rubbish. Then, last Sunday, it all clicked into place because I stopped procrastinating and being afraid of how sucky the story actually was. All I had to do was get my butt into that chair. Now, I’ll be using NaNo to hold myself accountable for finishing my edits and rewrites.

NaNo is a free tool, so make it work for you. Even if you only write 100 words, that’s 100 more words than you had when you started.

Good luck, friends! You can find me on NaNo here!

Are You Prepared for the Big Time?

First off, congrats to author Angel Christina Archer for winning the $20.00 amazon or b&n giftcard from last week’s Toni Kelly Halloween post. Thank you to all of you who joined Nights of Passion during our Halloween Spooktacular! For those of you who missed it, there is always next year!

Now onto this week’s post…

Just a couple days ago I listened to an interview on public radio with Robert Galbraith (also known as JK Rowlings – her pen name for a mystery/thriller series) whom I had never heard of before then. I have certainly heard of JK Rowlings and I’ve also heard of authors taking on multiple pen names, especially as we look to target different audiences of readers. It just makes sense, especially for bigger name authors like JK Rowlings who build up such a following. Most interesting to me in this interview was JK Rowling’s reference to the immense pressure she felt with the Harry Potter series—something she didn’t mind leaving behind as she transitioned into this new series. I found this interesting because many authors dream about making it big and having a huge outreach, but at many times, we don’t remember everything that comes with this.

As an author, I have found the most surprising part of writing all the social media and marketing work that goes into building a brand and growing your base. Admittedly, the demands of my daytime job and home life don’t quite allow for my own ability to spend so much time on social media—which is why my own writing has taken a back seat for a bit (not for too much longer I hope!) but JK Rowling’s own reflections on her experiences and the pressures of writing a big-time series really does give one pause. Nobody plans to be a big-time author. One simply aims to write a great book and sometimes it resonates with a big audience and sometimes it doesn’t. Still, it kind of goes back to what I always say in aiming to give our all and being prepared for what comes our way, at least as much as we can. Moral of the story? It helps to think ahead and see the big picture, not necessarily just the short term gratification. Are you writing the best story you can? And are you prepared for that big splash?

Good luck writing this week and thanks for joining me!

A Very Alpha Christmas on Preorder for 99 Cents! by Mandy Rosko

Hey guys! Hope you had an awesome Halloween, but now that it’s over, you all know what that means. Every store in America is tossing out their spooky decorations in favor of tinsel and big red glittery Christmas Tree balls and decorated pine trees. They probably did it Halloween night after the malls closed up.

It also means that all the awesome Holiday books are starting to emerge on the kindle, Kobo, and Nook stores, and I finally wrote one! My very first Christmas story (though it’s more of a New Year’s story) is being included in the Taming The Alpha Christmas Box Set! It’s on Preorder right now!

The last Box Set I was in, Taming The Monster, hit the USA Today Bestseller list at #91. Surprise! How awesome is that?! So now I want to show off this new awesome Holiday set. The covers and banners that Mandy Roth and Michelle Pillow had made up are really pretty, check it out :3

AlphaXmas-FB-banner3

A Very Alpha Christmas is on sale right now for 99 cents, and I wouldn’t be doing my part with the other authors if I didn’t suggest everyone lock in the 99 cent price before it goes up. Since the last set hit USA Today, I’m hoping I can work as hard as I can to help this one hit New York Times, and anyone who wants to pick up their copy of this awesome set will have 25 sexy, snowy stories from New York Times and USA Today bestsellers (me included now :D) to keep them warm in the chilly months ahead.

Unless, you know, you happen to live in Hawaii, in which case I’m super jealous of you.

My book included in the set is titled, The Lady and The Dragon’s Holiday, and it’s a short sequel to The Princess’s Dragon Lord.

Enjoy! And see you next week ;)

#AlphaXmas

Cheers,

~Mandy Rosko
