It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye by Heather Novak
Dearest Nights of Passion Readers and Sister Bloggers,
This will be my last regular post. From my very first blog post on June 11, 2015 I have had the most wonderful time sharing my journey with you. Writing for NoP each week feels like coming home. I have loved and adored this experience and am more thankful that I could ever say to Stacy Hoff for leading me here and Susan Hanniford Crowley for welcoming me with open arms.
As many of you know, I have had a year full of grieving. With the loss of my mom, my younger cousin, and a friend, my priorities have shifted. I’m stepping away from the blog to focus on my health, my family, and hopefully some books. The decision to step away was not an easy one, but I know that it’s the right one.
I’m not leaving forever – you can’t get rid of me that easily! I’ll be around with guest posts and definitely for book releases.
So, enough of this emotional crap. Let’s get to the fun stuff! Here are my top 10 favorite blogs that I’ve posted over the course of my two years with NoP.

United for a Cause
I happen to work within an industry that pushes the thought of careful planning. Retirement isn’t easy in all ways and gone are the days when you didn’t have to stress because the 30 years you put in at company X are going to pay off in the form of a big pension. Planning leads to results in most cases, but we can’t plan for everything and we’ll never know everything that lies ahead.
Those with an insurance background may say well that is what insurance is for and while I would agree in some cases, the one harm we can’t really prepare for is the emotional one.
I bring this up as it seems appropriate with Tropical Storm Harvey battering the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Many folks are losing their homes and personal possessions. Some have sustained injuries and others have lost their lives. Perhaps some of them have planned for possible losses but there will be many others who haven’t. Either way, the biggest toll will most likely be the emotional one and that one can’t necessarily be planned away. That is only something we as a community or even a country can support each other through.
I write this as the last couple years haven’t exactly been representative of a close knit, united country. But, we’ve done it before and we’ve done it in times of need. 9/11, hurricane Katrina, hurricane Sandy, etc. As you all watch the news and reflect, my ask is that you send some good will to our gulf coast countrymen (and women)– thoughts, prayers, volunteer work, donations, etc. I know I will be doing the same and together we will live up to our name as a country and be united for a cause

Not Taking On Too Much by Mandy Rosko
I’m sure I’ve touched on this before. If I did, I apologize, but I think this is something that needs to be brought up again because it’s worth mentioning.
Taking on too many projects is kiiiiiiiinda a mistake.
You know what I mean. Even if somehow you’re reading this far and aren’t into writing, I think everyone does this to themselves at some point.
Overbooking, over writing, over promising to do basically anything can lead to all kinds of stress that people really just don’t need.
By now, I’m thinking, hoping, that I’ve learned my lesson.
I say this because it’s been, I think, roughly two months since I’ve updated by Wattpad page, and my chapter release story of Kidnapped by the dragon could use an update.
Kidnapped by the dragon is one of the Patreon rewards I offer, posted chapter by chapter, and though all other rewards have been posted on time with the exception of some scheduling for one on one calls, I still feel bad about that one.
When I finish it, I’m thinking of making my Wattpad story the next Patreon Wattpad focused theme. Even though a lot of people have been coming to my Patreon Page for the Paranormal, which I will still give them in abundance, I’ve been loving Wattpad for writing tortured billionaire fantasies.
But there’s only so many words in a month that can be written, even on a good month, so I’m going to have to rearrange some of the things I want to get done, and put together a viable schedule so these stories get finished in less than a year each -_-
I’ll let you know how it goes next week when I have a better idea on how I’ll be doing this.
Cheers!

Darker Paranormal-Scope
Ever feel like you’ve been sitting in Beetlejuice’s waiting room? Things might be confusing this week, but remember, there is always star shine!
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
When Gnomes get mad, they spend without thinking. You may receive some extra money, but think twice about spending it on entertainment.
Taurus:
Elves know that it’s great to make new friends, but don’t forget those that have been loyal to you for years. Plan a special event.
Gemini:
Faeries enjoy the excitement of making a great business deal. Opportunities are coming your way. Check them out thoroughly.
Cancer:
Dragons fly close to each other for support and comfort. Enjoy the company you keep and build energy for some exciting times.
Leo:
Pixies are screaming, “Makeover!” It’s time to spruce up the image.
Virgo:
Werewolves know to let go when you just can’t get answers. There isn’t always closure. Just let go of that past and embrace the good things coming toward you.
Libra:
Werespiders often deceive. Their web isn’t of lies but of flattery. Beware of those who say nice things to your face but can’t be counted on.
Scorpio:
Shapeshifters sometimes take a shape they don’t want. It’s called compromise. Consider how much you can compromise in a situation without selling yourself out.
Sagittarius:
Werebunnies bite. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Don’t judge people that way either.
Capricorn:
Sirens call your name and whisper rumors. Don’t listen. Stay focused on your work, and you won’t run aground.
Aquarius:
Mermaids enjoy a last summer romp. So should you!
Pisces:
Vampires seldom come your way, but this week is different. It’s time to dance in the night and let your passions fly.

Reviews… BLURB!! by Ripley Proserpina
In the old days, when there were only bookstores and the library, I bought books based on blurbs. It was all I had to go on. Every so often the librarian would say, “You liked Wait ’Til Helen Comes… how about you try this one?”
But I relied on the book jackets, and the teasers written inside, to tempt me to buy. It was a system that worked, for the most part.
When it comes to books, I know what I like.
It’s true. There are definitely cases when a blurb might be misleading, but generally, it’s the best example of an author’s writing. If the blurb is interesting, concise, and easy to read, then I’m going to take a chance on that author.
When I was learning to write queries and blurbs, I found great advice from Maggie Stiefvater, who in turn said she’d received this advice somewhere else. “Summarize your book in one sentence,” she said.
And so I practiced that. I wrote one line summaries with commas, and semicolons galore. Eventually, I was able to put together something succinct, and I hope, intriguing.
So this is why I don’t read reviews. I’m going to let the author weave their magic, and draw me into their world, and I’m going to let them do that with their blurb. I know… sometimes authors don’t even write the blurbs, especially not those with trade publishers.
But for those indie authors, or authors with small publishers? They’ve got ten books spread across the kitchen table, and they’re reading the book jackets—practicing the art of the two paragraph summary—trying to suck in readers with the best damn blurb they can manage.

2 Adventures: Vikings and Fall in Love with New England Romance Readers and Authors Conference
The 1st Adventure:
Yesterday I had the joy and excitement of boarding the Viking ship that I have been admiring for the past several months as it was undergoing repairs. Finally I was on the Draken Harald Hårfagre, the world’s largest Viking sailing ship at this current time. For a short time longer they are giving tours at certain hours. https://www.mysticseaport.org/news/2017/viking-longship-to-open-for-tours-june-30/ And definitely when you go to that website, you’ll want to click on their video of the ship in the North Atlantic.
The ship is an experimental ship so there are no cruises only tours. Once they leave Mystic Seaport, you will want to visit their official site to see where they go next. There I am with the tour guide begin a shield maiden. It is such a wonder of a ship, you won’t want to miss this.
Now for the 2nd adventure:
[image error]This is a great romance readers/authors conference with a lot of hanging out and fun activities-panels, workshops, games, a costume dinner party, and more! Register today at www.fallinlovewithnewengland.com One of my favorites is that each registered reader who wants one can get a charm bracelet and then many of the authors are having charms made with book covers or a symbol of their book. Readers can go around and request the charm. In the end of the conference, they will have a wonderful bracelet filled with memories too. The booksigning is happening on Saturday and open to the public. More on that as we get closer. Oh, did I forget that it’s in Manchester, New Hampshire, the land of glorious fall foliage and tax-free holiday shopping! Register today!

Joanne Guidoccio’s Positive Approach to Writing by Stacy Hoff
Hello Passionate Readers! Today I have author Joanne Guidoccio talking about her uniquely positive approach to writing.
Affirmations for Writers
During my cancer journey, I read Louise Hay’s book, You Can Heal Your Life, and developed an interest in affirmations.
What is an affirmation?
An affirmation states an outcome or truth you wish to impress upon your mind. While the affirmation doesn’t actually make things happen, it can raise your vibration so that you are more receptive to the desired outcome.
At first wary, I slowly warmed up to the topic and adopted several of Louise’s suggestions:
Every cell of my body radiates health.
I relax and let my body heal itself.
I lovingly do everything I can to assist my body in maintaining physical health.
I also liked using the following mantra-like affirmation from French psychologist Émile Coué de la Châtaigneraie:
Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.
Having experienced success with these health-based affirmations, I decided to use this technique to help achieve my writing goals. And I wanted to create my own personal affirmations rather than piggy-backing on someone else’s success.
Here are the affirmations I’ve used during the past nine years of my writing journey:
My words flow easily.
Each day, I write with confidence and enthusiasm.
I submit a manuscript that is well received by a publishing house.
I write 50,000 words of a first draft during the month of November.
Joyful and creative, I delight in inspiring and motivating others with my written work.
Tips for Writing and Using Affirmations
Use the first person and the present tense.
Keep the affirmations brief and limited. Focus on one or two until you’ve incorporated them into your psyche.
Don’t sabotage yourself with an unrealistic goal. For example, “My book achieves best-seller status” is too much of a jump for an unpublished writer who is struggling with the first draft of her book.
Practice your affirmations each day. You can say them first thing in the morning, while looking in the mirror, or while exercising.
Write down your affirmations. You can stick them on your mirror or bulletin board, post them on your computer, or carry them in your purse or wallet.

When Gilda Greco invites her closest friends to a VIP dinner, she plans to share David Korba’s signature dishes and launch their joint venture— Xenia, an innovative Greek restaurant near Sudbury, Ontario. Unknown to Gilda, David has also invited Michael Taylor, a lecherous photographer who has throughout the past three decades managed to annoy all the women in the room. One woman follows Michael to a deserted field for his midnight run and stabs him in the jugular.
Gilda’s life is awash with complications as she wrestles with a certain detective’s commitment issues and growing doubts about her risky investment in Xenia. Frustrated, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers decades-old secrets and resentments that have festered until they explode into untimely death. Can Gilda outwit a killer bent on killing again?
Excerpt
He couldn’t believe he was following his wife’s advice. After twelve years of paying lip service to deep yoga breaths, mindfulness, and all the other New Age crap she espoused, he had finally found a use for it. His midnight run usually sorted out all the stress, but tonight was different. He still couldn’t shake the venom that had been directed his way.
To make matters worse, it had come from eight women, eight very different and very annoying women. He had bedded four, but right now he couldn’t imagine having sex with any of them. As for the untouched four, well, only one interested him, and it had nothing to do with her feminine wiles and everything to do with her healthy bank account.
He would have to take something to get through the night, something a lot stronger than his wife’s herbal teas. The remnants of an old Percocet prescription came to mind. Two capsules might do the trick. The thought of a panacea, albeit a chemical one, calmed his racing thoughts. A good night’s sleep would make a world of difference. And tomorrow, he would sort it out.
The light patter of feet distracted him. Definitely a woman’s gait. Her breath was even, neither shallow nor panting. Younger, maybe in her thirties. His pulse quickened, and a smile spread over his features. A welcome distraction. Just what he needed to erase the built-up stress. To hell with deep breathing, affirmations, and Percocet.

Friends Are Sometimes All You Need by Heather Novak
Three days ago, I made a horrible realization –
Let me back up and start at the beginning.
I FINALLY started writing. Not like “Yay I did some random writing on some random chapter of some random book” crap, but actual FULL FLEGED “I’m making my word count goals for this book and it’s awesome!” writing.
I’m working on the re-edit of Threat of Raine, the sequel to my novella Hunting Witch Hazel. I worked my butt off and was 80% done when I just couldn’t get there. My Happily Ever After was missing.
Then I came to a truly horrible realization: this book was not a romance.
Not in a novella. Maybe if it was a full length, extra long. My heroine was not the lead female in her story, somehow. I had created another paranormal creature who had taken her spot. FULL STOP.
I walked away from my computer and sent my editor/friend thirty crying-face emojis. This was the reason the book failed in the past, it’s why the betas sent it back over and over again saying it didn’t work. But I didn’t know how to fix it.
Thankfully, she did. For an hour, she peppered me with questions about books 2 and 3. At the end of the hour, she asked the simple question, “Why do there have to be two characters doing the same thing. Why not simplify it into one, because novella?”
I’m sitting there like, “Wait, what? I can do that?”
She responded, “Yes, it’s your book. You can do anything.”
I knew that, logically, but the way she said it really reminded me that I can’t be afraid to shape and reshape the characters. So, after crying into a box of cookies because I was going to have to scrap everything and start over for the fifth time, I opened a new word document and got to work.
This time, it’s DEFINITELY a romance.

Another Home Run from RWA by Heather Novak
Since I couldn’t get to Romance Writers of America (RWA) National Conference this year, I borrowed the flash drive with all the workshop lectures from my chapter’s library and have been listening intently. I’ll admit, this is the first year that I’ve done it because I’m a loon. That seriously is the only explanation.
If your RWA chapter does not have the lectures available, you can find them here.
While I haven’t gone through them all, I wanted tell you about the ones that I absolutely adored.
Romance Writer and Sex Educator Emily Foster (aka. Dr. Emily Nagoski) has been one of my heroes for a long time. I was unaware that she was at Nationals and so when I found both of her lectures, I squealed. Honest to god, squealed.
Her first lecture was Burnout Prevention (WELLNESS/WRITER’S LIFE) with Emily Foster and Amelia Nagoski. Sounds like it should be common knowledge, but let’s be honest. We still all have bad habits. Whelp. Emily and her twin sister Amelia break things down on a level that will get you thinking, with the science to back it up.
The Neuroscience of High-Impact Love Scenes (CRAFT) with Emily Foster is another phenomenal lecture. I’ve read Emily’s romance books, as well as her non-fiction book Come As You Are, so I wasn’t a stranger to this course. If you take nothing else from this blog post, take the following:
We need to start writing how much our characters enjoy intimacy and not just the physical reactions of the body. Because the body can physically react to almost anything, even if the character doesn’t enjoy it. There is a lot of straight, hard talk in this lecture, but it’s worth it. I highly, highly recommend.
Find Your Game Face: The Author Platform (CRAFT) with Damon Suede and Heidi Cullinan. Holy cow, everyone, this duo is absolutely phenomenal. The workshop helps you “cultivate your unique appeal by communicating your value and values to the marketplace. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, you’ll learn how to harness the power of public presence on- and off-line so you can attract the right kind of attention. Embody your brand with panache: a carefully constructed platform can be a game changer in the promo arena.”
The Art of the Novella (CRAFT) with Katharine Ashe, Robin Covington, Caroline Linden, and Lucia Macro is also fabulous! As I’m working through a 3 novella series, it’s wonderful to hear their tips and pointers on how to make your short stories shine.
Conflict: It’s Not an Argument (CRAFT) with Shirley Jump. This may SEEM like it’s obvious, but sometimes you just need the reminder to up your stakes. Internal and external conflict together really turn the pages.
If you were at RWA, what lectures did you go to? If you’re an at-home listener like me, what was your favorite?

Preciously Small Moments
I have a new niece and like many babies, she is cute as a button and I can’t wait to hold her within the next couple weeks. But what gets me most about new babies entering the world is how we are forced as parents to slow down a bit. I’ve mentioned this before but life is such a whirlwind and the older I get, the more I realize just how short it is.
In talking with my sister, I find myself simply pulled to a slower pace. It’s not to say life is easy with a new born—quite the opposite. But you do have this feeling that everything just comes to a standstill and that nothing really matters. Not the traffic outside, not the wasted meetings at work, not the fact that the person at the drive thru got your order wrong. It just doesn’t matter and quite frankly, if we spent a little less time worrying about these things we might just be happier as a species. But, that is also easier said than done.
What I do learn from these moments and instances (even though my newborns have grown into big little boys) is that we need these preciously small moments that ground us. They slow the pace down and help us really realize what matters during this infinitely small time on this earth.
So the lesson for today? Try something new… go outside, listen and watch. Breathe and just take your time. No rushing, no yelling, just complete calm and enjoyment of what a day can bring.
Happy writing this week!
