What is Value?

What do you consider value? If you pay to file your taxes is the value you gain as a result of simply filing or is it because your tax guy knows what he is doing and has saved you money year after year? And suppose he really hasn’t done anything special… would the great service and refund you would have gotten anyway merit the extra five hundred you spent walking into a ritzy office I a high rise building downtown? It just might.

This week, my coworkers and I spent a great deal of time talking about perceived value and how it may be even more important than actual value. It’s sort of akin to beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Every person may value something for a different reason. Some like myself love learning, some value time they get back, some value cost savings– some value all three or none or other things completely. It really makes you question what value stands for. You begin to differentiate the true monetary or physical value of something compared to its perceived value.

So why does any of this even matter? Well, to understand perceived value is to understand people and in understanding people you get to know what is most important to them– family, wealth, health, freedom, etc. You can’t reach people if you don’t get them. As a writer this is extremely important because we target audiences and need to know our readers. So what do we do? We listen, we understand and then we can create value for those around us or even ourselves.

Happy writing this week!

A Little Lemonade Paranormal-Scope & My Schedule for Confluence

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, right? Maybe not! (Cue evil laugh.)

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

Give a pixie a lemon and you’ll get a mind-fizzing lemon drink. This is a week for the unexpected. Surprise!

Taurus:

Give a zombie a lemon and they squeeze it into their eyes. Anything to see life again. You need to take a break and just chill out.

Gemini:

Give a werewolf a lemon and prepare for a game of hide the lemon. Solutions might evade you but be persistent and you will find your reward.

Cancer:

Give a vampire a lemon and you get a lemon meringue pie. Yum. It’s time to brush up on your culinary skills and make some treats.

Leo:

Give a shapeshifter a lemon and you get a game of lemon ball. The one that can’t catch it loses. Check with your doctor about increasing or changing up your exercise program.

Virgo:

Give a mermaid a lemon and they put it in a treasure box. Some people save the strangest things. Time to declutter your home.

Libra:

Don’t give an orc a lemon. You don’t want to know where they’ll stick it. Some people are in a grumpy mood. Focus on your work and avoid them.

Scorpio:

Give a faery a lemon and she’ll make lemon petit fours. Tons of them. Prepare for a party.

Sagittarius:

Give a dragon a lemon and they will slice it and put it in water for a refreshing, energizing drink. Take care of your health.

Capricorn:

Give an elf a lemon and they’ll write a cookbook on all the ways to serve lemon. It’s a great time to research a special project or hobby.

Aquarius:

Give a sprite a lemon and they’ll plant it. Check out new investments for the best growth. Always check out opportunities thoroughly.

Pisces:

Give a griffon a lemon and they’ll eat it. No more lemon. But they’ll want more. A friend will want to spend more time with you.

Bonjour! By Ripley Proserpina

In two weeks, the third full length book in my reverse harem, new adult romance series, The Searchers, releases. Finding Truth, has been one of my favorite books in the series so far, mostly because this character, Matisse Boudreau, is so surprising.

People often talk about two types of writers: pantsers and plotters. I’m a pantser, but I do draw my arcs and write things out when I get stuck on a question or in the action. So, I guess I’m a hybrid. A plotser.  A pantler.

Anyhoo- here’s a sneak peek.

Something was up. Matisse knew it as soon as he closed the door behind him. For one thing, the lights were on in the kitchen. He’d given his roommates and Nora ample time to believe he wouldn’t be returning until late. Used to being up all night, he wasn’t ready for sleep, even though he’d only slept a few hours during the day. A nearly-midnight entrance should have guaranteed him solitude. Instead he’d been out maneuvered.

Expecting a full-on intervention, he was surprised when only Apollo was in the kitchen. “Hey,” the larger man greeted when Matisse came through the door.

“Hi,” he replied warily. Any second, he expected to hear his friends’ feet pounding down the stairs so they could surround him and demand answers.

“Don’t look so nervous. No one else is here. Nora’s sleeping, but she wants me to wake her up when you get in. Seok’s reading, and Ryan, overachiever, is doing homework. It’s just you and me.”

“Emissary?” Matisse asked and flung his body into a chair, affecting nonchalance.

“Sort of,” Apollo answered. “I wanted to talk to you because we’re in the same boat.”

“How is that?” Impossible. Apollo—perfect, generous, kind Apollo—and him? The king of the illegal? The go-to guy for all things sneaky?

“Because there are things we do on the shady side of legal, and Nora needs to learn about them. Will, or has, in your case. Why didn’t you tell me, man?” Matisse studied Apollo’s features. His mouth turned down, and his eyebrows drew together—he’d hurt Apollo’s feelings.

“What would you have said?”

“Don’t do it,” Apollo answered quickly. “Be smart. And I’d have had no right to say it, either, considering I’m training to pound some guy into the ground of a warehouse on the outskirts of town.”

“You still would have said it.”

Apollo chuckled at Matisse’s words. “Yeah. I would have. It’s my job as your friend.”

Resting his elbows on the table, he linked his fingers around the back of his head and shook it from side to side. What a mess he’d gotten himself into. And for nothing. Literally nothing. Unless. “We’re talking about the bike races, right?”

Apollo leaned forward, his arms flexing as he folded his hands. “Should we be talking about something else?”

Matisse sprawled back in the chair and shook his head. “No.”

“Everyone wants to talk to you.”

“I’m sure they do, but it’s really none of their business.”

Romance Author J.M. Davies and The Witch’s Heart

INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone, I’m thrilled to be here as a guest author today. Thank you Susan Hanniford Crowley for letting me take over. Yay!

A few facts about me, my name is Jennifer Davies and I’m a fifty something mom with four [image error]boys, two cats, a dog, and a husband in tow. I have been married for twenty-one years this August to my best friend and strongest supporter. I’m originally from Wales in the UK which is why I have a funny accent, but I now reside on the East Coast of America in  New England.

I have lived in  North Andover for the past 14years, and it’s a perfect distance from the city of Boston, the coast, and the mountains which I love. Living in New England has been a huge source of inspiration for me, but  I find inspiration from many avenues, my family, my life, traveling and my persistence to keep writing. As a result, I always have ideas for future books.

I’m a former registered nurse/ midwife. I am always battling my weight, but as I’m addicted to chocolate, it’s not a fight I will win anytime soon. I adore Grey’s Anatomy. I love yard sales and get excited at the purchase of old furniture that I can recycle. My goal is to be a NY Times best seller—one day!

MY STORY

As a teenager, I never imagined I would ever leave Cardiff, Wales. I had my life mapped [image error]out, and everything I wanted on my doorstep. Growing up, I knew I wanted to be a nurse despite my dad pushing me to go to art college. He was worried nursing would be too difficult and stressful. I loved my family and I never wanted to be far away from them ever. I wanted to fall in love and live happily ever after with a couple of kids.

Life doesn’t always turn out the way you expect—at all.

My life has changed in a direction I never saw coming. I left nursing/midwifery after 15 years, and I’m now a full-time indie author. Whilst I enjoyed nursing, writing fills me with energy and passion that even when the demons rise I still want to keep pursuing my goal. I moved to live across an ocean, and I miss Wales, and my sisters, but I love New England. I’m in a constant see-saw of emotions about living in one place or the other. As a result, I visit my family as often as I can to keep me sane. I married  a man who pushed me out of my comfort zone, who challenges and inspires me still to reach for the stars.

TODAY

As I look back, I realize I have everything I wanted and more, even if at times there have been hurdles and mountains to climb. My life is an adventure, and the journey is part of what defines me as a writer. Throughout my life, I have always been an avid reader. My tastes range from Patricia Cornwell, to J.D. Robb. I love to read, and it’s from that love of  books that the desire to create my own stories grew, plus a wild imagination.

I’m a multi-genre author. I write under the pen name of  J. M. Davies for my adult romance books which began with  Capturing the Welsh Witch (November 2015). The first book in the Rise of Orion series. A paranormal romance. I loved creating the characters of Ella Masters, a soul-shifter and Marcus Drayton, a FBI agent, pushing them together and seeing how many hurdles I could create until they get their happy ever after. The sequel, The Witch’s Heart is out in August 2017.

The Vineyards of Allegretti is a contemporary romantic suspense set in Montepulciano, Tuscany. (April 2016). This story centers on Vivian King and Michael Allegretti and it’s about the secrets they both hide which puts their love and lives in danger. Marnie’s Plan came out December 2016 . It’s the first book in the Diamonds in the Rough series. These books are about the strength, determination, and friendship between women when faced with difficulties as well as romance.

I also writes YA fantasy. My first series and the very first book I ever wrote is called The Promise. The series is called the Children of Annwn and it is written under the name Jennifer Owen Davies. It’s a coming of age story about 17 yr old  Mia Leronde who discovers she isn’t human, but a guardian from the mythological realm of Annwn who is gifted with telepathy, foresight and the healing touch. The series is about confronting your fears and using that fear to reach your goal.

My Latest Release: The Witch’s Heart

Secluded away in a mansion on the rugged coast of Maine, pregnant, soul-shifter, Ella, should be happy. Instead, knowing the sinister Professor and the nefarious Elusti are out there and want her baby, she’s tormented with dread for the future.

Stubborn ex-navy SEAL Marcus refuses to forgo his mission with the security team Orion even after his beautiful wife dreams him dead, but insists, she remain at the high-tech fortress to be safe.

However, you cannot outrun destiny because it lurks in the darkness —waiting. When Ella’s worst fears materialize they are both shattered by loss and guilt. Each blames the other. Putting aside their personal tragedy they work together to bring down their enemies but at what cost? How far would you go to keep the ones you love safe?

Pre-Order your copy today and it will be delivered right to your Kindle on the 1st August!

Summer Progress (Sort of) by Stacy Hoff

I’ve been super busy this summer. It’s been hard to balance the needs of my family and my job. I’ve been leaving work early and still arriving late to pick up my kids from their summer programs. (Did I mention I hate traffic?) But even with all this chaos going on, I have managed to accomplish a few personal goals for myself. Sort of.

My draft for the third book in the BUILDING LOVE series is finally complete. Sort of. I’ve got the story written, but a whole lot more editing to do.

(The cover for book #1, which I released 3/22/17, is directly below.)

I’ve got a new book promo plan lined up for the October 11, 2017, release of book 2 of the Building Love series, HOTTER THAN THE CARIBBEAN. Sort of. My promo plan is not quite ready to be implemented, but at least I know what areas to pursue.

So, progress. Sort of. But progress is progress, right?

When I get overwhelmed, I think about the things I’ve already accomplished, instead of  just focusing on what still needs to be done. Last week I was notified that JOCKEYING FOR YOU was made a finalist for the 2017 “I Heart Indie” contest, sponsored by the Las Vegas Romance Writers. A few weeks ago, JOCKEYING FOR YOU was also made a nominee for InD’Tale Magazine’s 2017 RONE awards.

So somehow, somewhere, I’m getting things done after all. After I take a deep breath, I’m going to keep on movin’.

Do you have any projects you’ve done this summer—sort of?

Hate to Love in Real Life by Heather Novak

I cancelled all my plans last weekend to recover from my impromptu traveling due to a funeral, which left me on the couch in the middle of a weekend day.

SO WEIRD.

I was emotional exhausted and physically fatigued and, needless to say, a bit surly. Writing was not going to happen, cleaning was not going to happen (let’s be honest, was that even an option?), and dealing with outside chores was not going to happen. Everything I watched or tried to read was making me mad. (My therapist says it’s displaced anger blah blah blah grief and crap, blah blah blah)…so what now?

Ladies (and gentlemen?), may I let you in on a secret? I LOVE HATE WATCHING MOVIES! Instead of looking for things to make me happy  or emotional (omg I’ve cried enough, thank you), I decided to put on movies that I KNEW were going to piss me off. I got my favorite snacks (is it still Skinny Pop if I eat the entire bag?) and turned on movies.

OH MY GOSH were they terrible. And wonderful. I made sure to watch movies with good production quality and got lost in snarky comments and laughing at serious parts. (I’m looking at you, Sharknado.) I didn’t care when I took a 20 minutes nap in the middle. I didn’t feel pressured to like anything…and you know what?

I had a wonderful day.

Next, I started reading books that I thought I wasn’t going to like, and slowly got sucked into story lines I wouldn’t normally like. Suddenly, I got wrapped up and pulled out of my bad mood and into my happy place. The place between book covers.

Sometimes love and hate is a fine line. And don’t we all love a good enemies to lovers romance? What’s your favorite enemies to lovers book? I think Kulti by Mariana Zapata may be my favorite right now…

On this day in 2013 – Marie Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs, better known as Lindy Boggs, dies after a long life fighting for civil rights and the rights of women. She served in the US House of Representatives for 18 years, beginning by taking her husband’s seat after his death. Prior to his death she had been his political partner, even managing his political campaigns. She was also the US Ambassador to the Vatican and the first woman to preside over a major party convention, the 1976 Democratic National Convention. (b. 1916)

Make Today Yours

I recently blogged about my move across the country (or at least I may I have mentioned it) and I just have to say, moving is not fun and it is a lot of work. My hope is that if I have to move again, it is very far down the road. Okay, so now that I’ve got that out of my system, I have to say I am truly loving the greenery of the Carolinas. Sure it is humid and I hear the folks here talk about how horrible the humidity is, but coming from the desert, humidity is a treat. My skin isn’t cracking, my hair doesn’t feel so brittle, and life is good.

So why the difference? I lived on the east coast for 25 years and never did I have an appreciation for the humidity and greenery as I do now. Why is that? You know how as a kid your folks sit there and say things like life isn’t always greener on the other side or we always wish for what we can’t have? Well, they of course were right. Hey, I admit it. My response to most of my mom’s warnings was a roll of my eyes. The one thing I really wish I could speed up is the wisdom that comes with age, but then that would mean speeding up the experiences that make us wise and that isn’t something I’d want to happen. I mean think about it, we spend most of our lives learning lessons and growing wiser. Some of those lessons I’m sure we’d all like to leave behind but that just isn’t the way we work. If I hadn’t moved out to the desert searching for “greener” pastures then I wouldn’t have had the appreciation for where we’ve now moved.

I bring this up as even at this moment, I’m wearing a headset simply to block out the constant complaining of some folks around me. They are nice group but I have to say they spend a good portion of their days talking about everything negative in their lives and I’ve been there, done that. It sounds ridiculous but the talk is contagious and while I don’t think life is all rainbows, I’ve also lived long enough to realize that the uber venting is not going to make it better and quite frankly, I’m not sure it does much to make us feel better.

So, take a deep breath, tackle this next day and make the most of it. Happy writing folks!

A Sunny Paranormal-Scope

It’s either hot or rainy. Enjoy what you like the most! Time for hobbies.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

Vampires avoid the sun or use sunblock. Sunblock is not a bad idea for everyone. Protect your skin.

Taurus:

Goblins are not great with light in general. Shed more light on a problem that you’ve pushed aside too long. Go to experts.

Gemini:

Mermaids live in the splash of the moment. Be spontaneous and visit new places. Relax as you broaden your horizon.

Cancer:

A siren beacons. Be careful of what others say. Check out thoroughly any new opportunity that involves money.

Leo:

Zombies may be slow thinking but they are fast on their feet. They learn a lot about the history of others. Listen and learn; it will help you in the long run.

Virgo:

Orcs may not be gorgeous, but they are fierce friends if they believe in you. Pay attention to those that genuinely care about you.

Libra:

Wargs are great hunters. Take the time to scent out opportunity for yourself. Be persistent, methodical, and weed out the ones that just aren’t credible or pass the background check.

Scorpio:

Pixies think you are adorable. They will whack you with faery dust. That is good luck once you stop sneezing.

Sagittarius:

Dragons avoid the hustle and bustle of humanity. They seek the high places with clean air.  Plan a getaway to the countryside.

Capricorn:

A werewolf snuggles with you. Someone you least expect is looking on you with fondness.

Aquarius:

Shapeshifters enjoy gardening. Enhance the air in your home with plants.

Pisces:

One elf is a moment of wisdom. Two are a night on the town. Three are a party at your house. Expect unexpected company.
