Devotion for the Second Day of Christmas 2012
On the Second Day of Christmas, we remember St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, the disciple “whom Jesus loved.”
Revelation 1:1-3 (ESV)
1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
Lord God, today we remember St. John, who bore witness—especially in his Gospel and in the Book of Revelation—to You and to Jesus Christ, who described Jesus as the Light of the World, and who suffered for His witness. Give us the courage and desire to bear witness to the truth of Your Word, no matter what the cost to us. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Devotion for the First Day of Christmas 2012
Many people think the Twelve Days of Christmas are before Christmas Day, but they are actually the days between Christmas, the birth of Jesus, and the Epiphany, the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, the Visit of the Wise Men. This year I’m observing the Twelve Days of Christmas with a short Scripture and prayer.
On the First Day of Christmas we remember, St. Stephen, Deacon and Martyr.
Acts 7:48-60 (ESV)
48 [Stephen said] Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,
49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’
51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”
54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. 55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together[b] at him. 58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
Heavenly Father, as St. Stephen died a martyr, forgiving his persecutors as our Lord forgave His persecutors, give us the will and strength to stand for You against all enemies and still forgive those who would persecute us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Merry Christmas 2012
[image error]May you hear the good tidings of great joy spoken by the angel.
May you see the glory of the Lord as shown by the angels.
May you join your voice with the voices of the angels to glorify the Lord.
May you hurry with the shepherds to worhip the Babe in the manger.
May you join with the shepherd to share the Lord with everyone you meet, glorifying and praising God for His great gift of the Babe who is Lord, Messiah, and Savior.
2 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. ~ Luke 2:11-14 ESV
ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure virgin; Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen. ~ 1928 Book of Common Prayer

Christmas Day 2012
John 1 (NIV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Thank You, Father, for sending the Word, Your Son, to take on the nature of a human to save all of us from our sins. Open our eyes that we see the light and the glory. In His name. Amen.

Christmas Eve 2012
Revelation 3:20-21 (NIV)
20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. 21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.
Lord, I hear Your voice and I open the door and welcome You to come in and eat with me. Thank You that I will be victorious and sit with You on Your throne. Amen.

The Fourth Sunday in Advent 2012
Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV)
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
Lord Almighty, we look forward to the day when Your zeal accomplishes the return in glory of our Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace, who will reign forever with You and the Holy Ghost. In His name we pray. Amen.

Hebrews 10:36-11:1
36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For,
“In just a little while,
he who is coming will come
and will not delay.”
38 And,
“But my righteous one will live by faith.
And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”
39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Lord, we know Jesus is coming and will not delay. We will live by faith and not shrink back. We hope to see Jesus soon, and we have confidence in that what we hope for will happen. We believe in what we cannot see. In the name of Jesus Christ who died and rose and will come again. Amen.

Friday after the Third Sunday in Advent 2012
Matthew 11:2-11 (NIV)
2 When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” 4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.” 7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written: “‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ 11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
O Lord Almighty, we know that John was Your messenger sent to proclaim the coming of Jesus. Jesus said no one was greater than John, yet He said the least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than John. We are amazed that each of us, insignificant as we are in the world, are great in Your Kingdom. Help us through the power of the Holy Ghost to walk in Your way and proclaim You to the world through our words and actions. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Thursday after the Third Sunday in Advent 2012
James 5:7-10 (NIV)
7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! 10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Lord, patience is difficult for us. We understand that the farmer has to wait for the rain and the season to produce a crop, but we find ourselves grumbling against each other rather than patiently waiting. Your time is not our time; help us to be patient in the face of suffering, uncertainty, and conflict. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
