Tuesday after the Second Sunday in Advent 2012

Isaiah 55:6-7 (NIV)

6 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

Lord, we seek You and call on You. We forsake our wicked ways and unrighteous thoughts. We turn to You. Thank You for Your mercy and pardon manifested in Jesus Christ our Lord. In His name we pray. Amen.

Monday after the Second Sunday in Advent 2012

Luke 21: 25-28 (NIV)

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Lord, when we look at the world around us today, nations are in anguish and people are apprehensive. We don’t know when the Son of Man will come in the cloud and great glory, but we know our redemption is drawing near. Make us ready for that great day. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

The Second Sunday in Advent 2012

Micah 5:2-4 (NIV)

2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” 3 Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. 4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.

Lord, sometimes we think we are too small or too insignificant to make a difference. Yet You chose Bethlehem, a small, insignificant town to be the birthplace of our Lord. Indwell us with Your Holy Spirit and empower us to do great things for Your glory. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

This 30-minute movie is food for thought for Advent. I highly recommend that you take the time to watch it and consider the powerful questions.

Friday after the First Sunday in Advent 2012

Matthew 24:36-44 (NIV)

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Lord, we don’t know when Jesus is returning, but we know we need to be ready. Save us from our attachment to the world and endue us with an attachment to Your Word. Inspire our hearts and minds and souls to live so that we are ready for the Coming, whenever it happens. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thursday after the First Sunday in Advent 2012

Romans 13:11-14 (NIV)

11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Heavenly Father, we praise You that the night is nearly over and the day is almost here. Guide us by the Holy Spirit to clothe ourselves in Jesus, to put on the armor of light and behave decently so we are ready for the great day when Jesus comes again in glory. In His name. Amen.

Isaiah 9:2-3 (NIV)

2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.

Thank You, Lord, for revealing the light of Jesus to us. We rejoice at the dawning of the light of our salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Tuesday after the First Sunday in Advent 2012

Isaiah 2:1-5 (NIV)

1 This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: 2 In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will stream to it. 3 Many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. 5 Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Heavenly Father, lead us to walk in Your light. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
