Wednesday after the Third Sunday in Advent 2012

Luke 1:47-55 (NIV)

47 And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

Heavenly Father, thank You that You care about the least of us and You always keep Your promises. Let us follow Your example and care for others and always keep our promises. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Tuesday after the Third Sunday in Advent 2012

Isaiah 35:1-10 (NIV)

1 The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, 2 it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. 3 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; 4 say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.7 The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. 8 And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it.9 No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, 10 and those the LORD has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Lord, our God, we long for the day when sorrow flees and gladness and joy overtakes us. We long to walk on the Way of Holiness. Make us strong; take away our fear; and give us faith that our Lord will come to save us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Monday after the Third Sunday in Advent 2012

Mark 36:26-37 (NIV)

26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. 28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

Lord God, we do not know the day or the hour of Jesus’ coming. Keep us alert and watching and ready so that in that glorious day, we will gathered with Him with He comes in clouds with power and glory. In His name we pray. Amen.

The Third Sunday in Advent 2012

Isaiah 40: 1-5 (NIV)

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Heavenly Father, we thank You that our sin has been paid for, not by anything we have done but solely by Your grace and the sacrifice of Jesus. Guide us by the Holy Spirit to walk in Your ways and to do Your will. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Saturday after the Second Sunday in Advent 2012

Psalm 50:3-6 (NIV)

3 Our God comes and will not be silent;

a fire devours before him,

and around him a tempest rages.

4 He summons the heavens above,

and the earth, that he may judge his people:

5 “Gather to me this consecrated people,

who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,

for he is a God of justice.

Lord, we know You are a God of justice, and we are sinful and unworthy. If You judge us as we deserve, we will receive everlasting punishment. But not only are You a God of justice, but You are a God of mercy and grace. Thank You for sending Jesus to take the punishment that we justly deserve. Thank You for showing mercy and grace and love to us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Devotional Resources: Cradle of Prayer and the Prayer Book

[image error]Are you considering what type of personal devotions you will do in the coming year? I use two online resources that I highly recommend.

The Cradle of Prayer offers recorded Morning and Evening Prayer using the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Just select the day and either Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer, and you will hear beautiful canticles sung and prayers and  Scriptures read.

To follow along with the service, visit CommonPrayer.org. Again, select the service—Morning or Evening Prayer—and read/sing along with the recording.

Some people think it’s strange that I use the Internet rather than printed material for my daily devotions. But for me, it is easier to read on the computer because I can increase the font size. And I enjoy hearing the songs and readings and participating rather than simply reading quietly.

Whether you prefer to read from a printed book or join in an online devotion, I encourage you spend time in personal devotion daily.

Friday after the Second Sunday in Advent 2012

Matthew 3:1-3 (NIV)

1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:   “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’

Heavenly Father, in this time of Advent, prepare our hearts and make a straight path for us to follow You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thursday after the Second Sunday in Advent 2012

Matthew 25:1-13 (NIV)

1 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.  6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Heavenly Father, make us wise like the virgins who carried oil for their lamps. We do not know the day or the hour Jesus will come, but we want to be ready. In His name. Amen.

Isaiah 11:1-5 (NIV)

1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might,    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD— 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,  or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

Lord, thank You for sending Your Son, our Savior Jesus, that shoot from the stump of Jesse with the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord. May we, like Him, delight in the fear of the Lord. In His name we pray. Amen.
