Monday after the First Sunday in Advent 2012

Romans 13:11-14 (NIV)

11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Heavenly Father, empower us by the Holy Spirit to live in the day, not the night, to clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ and not think about gratifying the desires of the flesh. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The First Sunday in Advent 2012

Jeremiah 31:31-34 (NIV)

31 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Lord, thank You that You have made a new covenant with Your people and have fulfilled that covenant through Your Son Jesus Christ, who came to earth as a humble baby, who died for our sins, and who was raised again to give us eternal life. In His name we pray. Amen.

Advent Conspiracy

Advent is the time before Christmas when we prepare for the coming of Jesus:

His first coming as an infant in a manager in Bethlhem
His coming into our hearts when we accepted Him as our Lord and Savior
His second coming to judge the world

It’s easy to get distracted with all the holiday preparations, parties, and presents. Each year I add a special Advent Bible reading to my normal devotions. I save the readings and my prayers and post them on my blog the following year. So starting the First Sunday in Advent (tomorrow), you will find a daily Scripture and prayer here. Although they are very short, I pray that these messages make Christmas and the time leading to it more meaningful.

The video suggests that we remember others during this season. Two worthwhile nonprofits are highlighted in the video, and I encourage you to help a charity or an individual—whether you donate canned goods to your church’s food pantry, give money to an international children’s agency, or take gifts and Christmas dinner to a neighbor who lost his job.

Thanksgiving 2012

Thanksgiving is not about food, family, and football. Although the holiday has a wonderful history, Thanksgiving is not about a history lesson on the Pilgrims. Family, food, football, and the story of the Pilgrims are all good things, but they are not what Thanksgiving is all about. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks to Almighty God. The Bible says: “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of this day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. ~ 1928 Book of Common Prayer

National Bible Week and National Day of the Bible 2012

[image error]Thanksgiving Week is also National Bible Week, a time to encourage the reading of God’s Word by His people.

This year, the National Bible Association, the founder of National Bible Week is observing National Day of the Bible, today, November 19. Christians are urged to gather in public to read the Scripture aloud.

If you don’t have the opportunity to join other Christians in a public reading of God’s Word, this is a good day to focus on reading Scripture yourself. Each year, I choose a Bible reading plan to follow for the year. This year, my husband’s final illness, death, funeral, and aftermath distracted me from my plan. As a caregiver, I didn’t have the uninterrupted quiet time to read each day’s Scripture. I got too far behind to catch up. So right now, I’m reading Bible passages that relate to daily devotionals but not trying to complete a formal plan. In January, I will start a new plan to read the Bible in a year, choosing a version I have not read before.

Do you follow a Bible reading plan? If not, how do you spend time in God’s Word?

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. ~ Romans 15:4 (KJV)

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.~ 1928 Book of Common Prayer, Collect for the Second Sunday in Advent

I Love to Write Day 2012

[image error]Today is I Love to Write Day, and 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the event. Author John Riddle started I Love to Write Day to encourage people to write and to nurture a love of writing in children.

November is National Lifewriting Month. I encourage everyone to write their own life story or family history. It can be as simple as a loose-leaf binder of pages printed from a computer or as sophisticated as a bound hardcover book. It can be given to family members and friends or it can be published for a larger audience. Imagine how much you would enjoy reading your great grandfather’s autobiography or your great-great grandmother’s memoir. Your great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and generations beyond will be just as happy to read about your life. Make I Love to Write Day the beginning of writing your life story. You can celebrate National Lifewriting Month an I Love to Write Day as you start to create a priceless legacy for your descendants.

I am currently working on a very special life story. I am compiling stories my late husband frequently told others about his life, memories from friends and family members, and my favorite stories and memories of him. The book will be a cherished treasure for all of his family and  friends, and the stories we share will be preserved for future generations. Although my primary purpose is to share Jack’s life with others who loved him, I will publish the book and make it available on Amazon.com as well.

Have you done any lifewriting—your own story or the life story of a loved one? If so, share your experience in comments. If not, have you considered doing so? Make a commitment and state your intention in a comment.

National Adoption Month 2012

[image error] November is National Adoption Month.

As the mother of an adopted son and as a passionate pro-life advocate, I want to see every child in a home with parents who love them.

Most of the children available for adoption are older children, and many couples want to adopt infants. Because a large majority of babies who would be adopted are murdered in the womb by their own mothers, there are few infants available for adoption. However there are more than 100,000 children currently living in foster care, hoping for a family of their own.

I can tell you there are challenges to adopting an older child, but there are many blessings as well. Children need parents and a family life, and adoption is the way to provide that for the thousands of kids who are stuck in the child welfare system.

O LORD Jesus Christ, who dost embrace children with the arms of thy mercy, and dost make them living members of thy Church; Give to those who have no family, grace, we pray thee, to stand fast in thy faith, to obey thy word, and to abide in thy love; that, being made strong by thy Holy Spirit, they may resist temptation and overcome evil; place them in loving homes so that they may rejoice in the life that now is, and dwell with thee in the life that is to come; through thy merits, O merciful Saviour, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest one God, world without end. Amen.   ~ Adapted from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer
