Scripture for Monday after the Second Sunday in Lent 2013

1 He began to teach again by the sea. And such a very large crowd gathered to Him that He got into a boat in the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land. 2 And He was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His teaching, 3 “Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil. 6 And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. 8 Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.” 9 And He was saying, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”10 As soon as He was alone, His followers, along with the twelve, began asking Him about the parables. 11 And He was saying to them, “To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but those who are outside get everything in parables, 12 so that WHILE SEEING, THEY MAY SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE, AND WHILE HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR AND NOT UNDERSTAND, OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT RETURN AND BE FORGIVEN.” 13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 These are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them. 16 In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; 17 and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word, 19 but the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 And those are the ones on whom seed was sown on the good soil; and they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”~ Mark 4:1-20 (NASB)

Lord, sometimes I expect everyone who hears Your word to allow it to change their lives. However, Jesus himself said that some will listen to the Word and ignore it. Others will initially accept it but let trouble kill the Word in their lives. Another group of hearers will initially follow You, but soon the worries and irritations of life or the temptations of worldly abundance take away their joy and commitment. But when the Word falls on good soil, it produces fruit of the Spirit. Make me that good soil, that fertile ground, that produces the fruit of the Spirit and shares Your love and Word with the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture for the Second Sunday in Lent 2013

31 Then His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside they sent word to Him and called Him. 32 A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You.” 33 Answering them, He said, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” 34 Looking about at those who were sitting around Him, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother.” ~ Mark 3:31-34 (NASB)

Lord, I am so blessed to be part of Your family—to be a sister to Jesus. If  I had been His mother Mary, I might have been very hurt, but she knew from before Jesus’ conception that He was not hers, but Yours. She was chosen by You to give birth to Your Son, but His loyalty was always to You, His Father. As a member of His eternal family, lead me to love and serve You as Jesus did on earth. In His name. Amen.

Scripture for Saturday after the First Sunday in Lent 2013

13 And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. 14 And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to cast out the demons. 16 And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), 17 and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, “Sons of Thunder”); 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him. ~ Mark 3:13-19 (NASB)

Lord God, Jesus knew even when He chose Judas Iscariot as His disciple that Judas would betray. It was all part of Your plan for the salvation of the world. Thank You for Jesus’ sacrifice that my sins are forgiven and I have eternal life. In His name. Amen.

Scripture for Friday after the First Sunday in Lent 2013

1 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. 2 They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. 3 He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” 4 And He said to them, “Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?” But they kept silent. 5 After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him. ~ Mark 3-1-6 (NASB)

Heavenly Father, the Pharisees conspired against Jesus for healing on the Sabbath. Yet You sent Your Son to heal the sick—those who are physically sick, those who emotionally sick, and most of all, those who are spiritually sick—in their time of need. As important as holy days and times of worship are, loving and healing Your sick children are more important. Guide me to those whom You would have me to share Your love with and empower me by the Holy Spirit to show Your love and healing power. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Scripture for Thursday after the First Sunday in Lent 2013

23 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” ~ Mark 2:23-28 (NASB)

Lord, Jesus showed that He is Lord of all, Lord of the Sabbath, Lord of Creation, Lord of Lord and Kings of Kings. May I always worship in spirit and in truth You—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Scripture for Wednesday after the First Sunday in Lent 2013

18 John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. ~ Mark 2:18-20 (NASB)

Lord, may I always focus on a relationship with Jesus first and specific practices second. In His name. Amen.

Scripture for Tuesday after the First Sunday in Lent 2013

14 As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him. 15 And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” ~ Mark 2:14-17 (NASB)

Lord, sometimes it’s easy to be judgmental and think I’m not as bad as someone else. I’ve never committed murder or adultery or theft. Yet in Your holy eyes, we are all equally guilty. Against Your perfect standard, I am as a filthy rag. Thank You that Jesus came as the Great Physician to me and to all sinners. Cleanse my heart and purify my spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture for Monday after the First Sunday in Lent 2013

3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” ~ Mark 2:3-10a (NASB)

Lord, I have sought healing from You and have been healed several times. Your healing power is amazing, but Your power to forgive sins is far more amazing. I can live in this life and eternity with physical ailments, but I can’t live with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Heaven unless my sins are forgiven. Forgive my sins, cleanse my heart, and give me eternal life. Amen.

Scripture for First Sunday in Lent

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” ~ Mark 1:35-37 (NASB)

Heavenly Father, how often I rush through my day—starting the day responding to someone else’s needs or something other than time with You. Yet Your Son, the Second Person of the Trinity, our Savior, began His day praying. How much more do I need to start my day with You. Help me to slow down the morning rush and spend time with You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
