Should an author's political views matter?

Would you read a book written by a raging homophobe, a racist, or a misogynist?  What if the fictional work looked interesting and didn't include any of the author's objectionable views?  Should the story stand on it's own?

How much realism is too much in erotica?

Okay, so I have something like a series that I work on from time to time when an idea occurs to me. It involves a young man who has started his own catering business and a gorgeous man who patronizes said business. The two of them become involved in a scorching, D/s love affair. The characters are great fun to write and seem well-liked by my readers. The books always sell well for me, and I'd like to revisit these guys. Even the reviews I get are positive:

After many setbacks and just bad luck, my novel To Light My Way is available from Tease. It represents the Star Card, which, among other things, symbolizes hope and gradual change. I'm very eager to see some reviews and get some reader feedback, as I'm not sure how this book will be received. It goes from being rather quiet to extremely violent at times. Okay, these make me happy because I wasn't sure how me and Eon's short story would be received. For one thing, I've noticed a lot of romance readers don't care for horror elements (not that I necessarily consider our work "romance," but that's another blog). Also, I'll be the first to admit that the story's just kind of bizarre. Post-Halloween
