If You Haven't Read Sugar by Bernice McFadden, You Should

Sugar (Sugar Lacey, #1) Sugar by Bernice L. McFadden

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Sugar was beautifully wrenching. At times it was almost too painful for me to read. I really could not understand why Sugar kept making the choices that she did. Her life is certainly an example of how a woman can be beat down so much that she can't accept good treatment even when it's offered to her numerous times. I love historical fiction and good story-telling. And the writing was tremendous. I loved the phrasing, settings and descriptio...

Climbing a Canadian Mountain and Sweating to Femi Kuti at the Montreal Jazz Fest

Last summer Heart & Soul Magazine sent me on an assignment to the Montreal Jazz Festival. My article on one of the healthiest cities in the world is in the June/July 2010 issue on stands now. There's also a companion piece over on the H&S website about the delectable dining I did while in Montreal.

While enjoying more than a dozen concerts in a week, I explored everything from mountain climbing to the invigorating Scandinavian baths. Here are some shots of my amazing experience. Get out there ...

Lately my feelings have been hurt by the overly-sexual lyrics in songs and images in videos. I do my best to check in with what teens and 20-somethings are listening to every now and then, and I really dig VH1 Soul, which airs videos from artists like Jill Scott, Maxwell and Sade to old school hip hop and eighties R&B.

Lena Horne: Thank You Momma!

Thank you Momma for taking me - at age 12 - to see Lena Horne in her one-woman show, "The Lady and Her Music." You knew, Momma, that it was important for me to see this amazing talent. I was blessed and in awe of her larger than life performance. Thank you Momma for instilling in me an appreciation of the arts nearly from birth. You are truly the best - Happy Day After Mothers Day!

Lena Horne after receiving a special Tony Award in 1981: "Sometimes you have to wait 50 years. Sometime...

The Speediest Easter Egg Hunter Gets Her Picture in the Paper!

The photographer that took my 3-year old daughter's picture at this Easter egg hunt last Saturday, said he was struck by how fast she took off when the announcer said "Go!" My baby got her eggs, and because the photographer worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she also got her picture in the paper's Easter Egg Hunt photo gallery.

Check me out cheering her on!

Tenacious, isn't she?

Too cute.

Egg-hunting partners!

Creative girl: A tiger balloon hat - her own idea.

And at another egg hunt...
