Win Terry McMillan's Sequel to Waiting To Exhale!

Can a woman be happy without a man?

I heard Terry McMillan on The Takeaway this morning talking about her new book, Getting to Happy, the sequel to her best-selling novel, Waiting to Exhale (which is nearly 20 years old!?!?!). While there's betrayal, divorce and tragedy in the new book, McMillan talked more about how the characters Bernadine, Savannah, Gloria and Robin were all looking to themselves for happiness instead of to a man.

I wonder how many women realize this is the way to go - or ev...

When Abbey Lincoln Kicked Me Out....

When Abbey Lincoln kicked me out of her dressing room in the mid-1990s, I knew very little about who she was.

Interviewing Ntozake Shange Tomorrow!

Tomorrow I'll be interviewing Ntozake Shange and I'm feeling a bit like I did the night before I interviewed Alice Walker - nervous.

Before I interviewed Ms. Walker, I spent a several hours on the phone with several of the most talented writers I know. We talked about questions, conversation tactics, and the work of Ms. Walker. It helped, but I was still nervous.

In the end the interview was interesting and enlightening. My nervousness fell away as I listened to her speak about issues in the wo...

Caught Up In the Rapture of GloATL

My daughter and I caught an AMAZING performance by gloATL dance company this weekend. They danced to every style of music to tracks from Big Boi's newest album to the theme from Titanic.

Shimmering by moonlight, the dancers electrified the audience floating, writhing and melting across the lawn of the Woodruff Arts Center. One dancer glided through water in a mesmerizing aqua performance. Others scaled the walls and flitted through the crowd with wild energy. It was truly moving.

Spotted: Creative Job Seeker

I drove behind this guy on the way to work last week. I said a quick prayer that a potential employer would see his creative advertising. It's hard out there. Bless those looking and hiring.

From one glass of Rosé to $1M in sales next year, Selena Cuffe is bringing wines made by Black African vintners to the United States through Heritage Link Brands. When my brother had wine via Heritage Link at his wedding several years ago, the company was just getting itself off the ground. Now they will be providing distribution of these wonderful wines to more than 1,000 locations in 40 states. Buy a bottle, support and share!

The Information Junkie is Moving On

At my core, I'm a life-long learner. And I selfishly want everyone to love to learn, too, which is why, in 2005, I started the blog, The Joyce Journal. A blog was a welcome change from years of accosting my family, friends and associates with emails full of interesting articles, event listings and all kinds of opportunities.

In the past several years, I've joined Facebook and Twitter to share and discuss. I launched Enjoyceinglife in 2008 as an outlet to challenge myself for more self-expres...
