Me-yowch

Took the two farm cats in for a some elective surgery this morning.  Was fun to talk to the veterinarian and another one of the employees, as they both knew my grandparents, in particular my grandmother.  Grandma was a tough-talking, Carlton-100s-smoking woman who started the local humane association and animal shelter.  Somewhere she is smiling, knowing our cats will be neutered.

I cannot speak for the cats.

Snow People

Just enough "pack" left in the snow last night after school so that the two young'ns and I were able to make some snow people.  Also got to see the two-year-old on the swing, swooping back and forth over the white expanse.  Y'know you're a Wisconsin toddler when you understand what the phrase "it's packing snow!" means, and when you quite happily swing back and forth in the cold winter dusk while bundled in snowpants, down jacket and a hot pink earflapper cap.

Find Me In The Light

I like the mystical melancholy of this track by Luke Redfield.

Monday Morning

Holing up to write for the morning.  I have something going, want to keep it rolling.

Dinner last night with dear friends, recently married.  How good to see the love in their eyes.

Totally Teetotal

The new issue of Men's Health magazine contains an essay I wrote about my non-drinking ways.  Included is the anecdote of how being alcohol-free got me kicked off a jury.

Lucille Clifton

A woman who greatly influenced my writing is gone.  We were not acquaintances.  I seem to recall seeing her speak once, but I might have been remembering a video I watched in a Bruce Taylor poetry workshop long ago.  Her work is on my bookshelf, and – if she would allow me to say so – between the lines of my own pages.

Some of her work is here.  Hear the power of her reading here.  [Sometimes that audio link doesn't work.  Here's the text of the poem she's reading.]

We are told that the new Long Beds album has been officially added to the jukebox at The Joynt.

Everything else is gravy.

Tiny Pilot Tour

I'm going to hit the road around Wisconsin (and over into Minnesota) in mid-March with my books and my band.  We'll be posting specifics soon.

In the meantime, the new album is available for pre-order over at Amble Down Records.  If you place your pre-order now, within 24 hours the record company will send you a code so you can download and listen to the entire album immediately.  Then on March 1(15 days prior to the official release) they'll mail you the physical album (featuring 3 bonus...
