Grammar Cop: Sausage, Sneaky Mountains, and Lottery Tickets
I continue to be amazed at the Grammar Cop pictures I am sent. Many times the signs which are not professional are more likely to be incorrect, but, as you will see below, even large corporations are susceptible to mistakes.
As always, you can submit your Grammar Cop photos by tweeting them to me (@ThomRainer).
I seem to receive a disproportionate number of entries from grocery store signage. I’m open to suggestions as to why that is. (via Todd Caudel)
This incorrect word usage happens much too frequently– unless those mountains are really that sneaky. (via Dan Kassis)
Finally, yet another reason not to play the lottery. (via Greg Williams)
Please Welcome Chuck Lawless to the Blog
I’m excited to announce the addition of Dr. Chuck Lawless to the blog team here at ThomRainer.com. Several of my readers likely know of Dr. Lawless through his various academic and missions tenures over the years, but for those not familiar with him, here is a short bio:
Dr. Lawless currently serves as Professor of Evangelism and Missions and Dean of Graduate Studies at Southeastern Seminary, in addition to serving as Global Theological Education Consultant for the International Mission Board where he previously served as a Vice-President for Global Theological Advance. Prior to that, he was dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions and Evangelism at Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY, where he also served as Vice President for Academic Programming and the Director of Professional Doctoral Studies.
Dr. Lawless pastored two Ohio churches prior to joining the Southern Seminary faculty in 1996. He received a B.S. degree from Cumberland College (now the University of the Cumberlands) and M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Southern Seminary. He and his wife Pam reside in Wake Forest, NC.
He is the author of eight works, including Membership Matters, Spiritual Warfare, Discipled Warriors, Putting on the Armor, Serving in Your Church Prayer Ministry, and Mentor. He has contributed articles to multiple periodicals, written Sunday School curriculum for LifeWay, and led conferences on spiritual warfare, healthy church growth, leadership, evangelism and discipleship, and prayer.
You can connect with Dr. Lawless on both Twitter and Facebook. His columns will begin next week and run on most Tuesdays.

Last Chances for Churches to Reach 50 Million Americans
My generation was the largest generation. It was the generation businesses and churches wanted to reach. We were the sixties generation. The self-indulgent generation. The “me” generation. The Vietnam generation. The Watergate generation. The Civil Rights generation.
And now we are the dying generation.
I’m not trying to be morbid or sensational. I’m simply reporting census realities. We were born between 1946 and 1964. The oldest among us is 67 years old. Mortality is inevitable. We are shrinking in numbers.
During the baby boom that followed World War II, more than 76 million live births were recorded in the United States. At the time we were the largest generation in history. We have since been supplanted by the nearly 80 million Millennials born between 1980 and 2000.
But here is the harshest reality about my generation. We estimate that only about one-third of Baby Boomers are Christians. That means that 50 million adult Americans in this generation are unchurched and have yet to be reached with the gospel of Christ.
And time is running out.
Here are a few (hopefully) helpful facts about the Baby Boomers and churches. Of course, our findings depict the majority of Boomers, not all of them at any one time.
Most churches, if they have an intentional outreach ministry, gear it toward the younger generations. That is understandable. But relatively few church leaders are asking the question, “What can we do prayerfully and strategically to reach the Baby Boomers?”
Most of the unchurched Boomers do not have an anti-church mentality. They are more receptive than most imagine.
Most of the unchurched Boomers would not be caught up in worship wars. They have a wide tolerance and even fondness for many musical and stylistic approaches. A church’s worship style would most likely not be a hindrance to reaching a Boomer.
Though Boomers are fast becoming senior adults, they will not appreciate many churches’ approaches to senior adult ministry today. They want to make a difference, not simply be entertained and take trips. You may very well reach many Boomers by demonstrating how the Christian life is the only true life of meaning, and how they can make a difference as a believer.
Boomers are becoming increasingly introspective. They are asking life questions that really matter. Their receptivity to matters of eternal import could be great right now.
This generation largely doesn’t want to talk about retirement. They speak more in terms of career shift or new vocational opportunities. They are not ready, and probably never will be, for traditional approaches to retirement.
The Boomers are thinking about relationships now more than any point in their lives. A simple but powerful way to reach the unchurched in this generation is to get Christian Boomers to connect with them. Many Boomer Christians haven’t invited someone to church in years. Now is the opportune time.
As you celebrate this new year, allow one sobering reality to be before you: more than one million Baby Boomers will die before the year concludes. If it took you five minutes to read this article, ten Boomers died while you were reading. By 2015 the death rate will increase significantly.
We have but a few chances left to reach the lost and unchurched among the Baby Boomers. Time is growing short.
“Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest’” (Matthew 9:37-38, HCSB).

Pray for Wadesboro Baptist Church
Location: Ponchatoula, Louisiana
Pastor: Les Fogleman
Worship Times: 11:00 AM Central Time
Fast Facts: Wadesboro Baptist Church is located on a back road in the charming city of Ponchatoula, Louisiana. Lack of visibility is a real challenge for this small congregation. Pray that God will help his church grow from a worship attendance of twenty-six and a Bible study attendance of only eight. Pastor Fogleman asks for prayer that God would raise up Bible study leaders to start a discipleship class for young couples and one for children.

“Pray for . . .” is the Sunday blog series at ThomRainer.com. We encourage you to pray for these churches noted every Sunday. Please feel free to comment that you are praying as well. If you would like your church to be featured in “Pray for . . .” contact Steve Drake, director of pastoral relations, at Steve.Drake@LifeWay.com.

Largest Churches in the Southern Baptist Convention
On occasion I will write a blogpost specifically related to my denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention. I am aware that a large number of my readers are not a part of the SBC. Thanks for your willingness to “listen in” as I write about my denominational family, the largest Protestant denomination in the world.
We now have the most recent data on the churches of the SBC. In this post I simply note the largest churches, those with an attendance of 1,000 and above. My purpose is simply to inform, not to make qualitative comments, at least at this point.
Here is some additional information related to these churches:
All numbers are self-reported by the churches.
If a church does not report, it obviously is not on this list. I know of at least a few churches that did not report.
There are 603 reported churches in the SBC with a worship attendance of 1,000 or more. With approximately 46,000 churches in the denomination, only 1.3% of the churches are this large. Inversely stated, 98.7% of the churches in the SBC have an attendance under 1,000.
There are 190 reported churches in the SBC with a worship attendance of 2,000 or more. With approximately 46,000 churches in the denomination, only 0.4% of the churches are this large. Inversely stated, 99.6% of the churches in the SBC have an attendance under 2,000.

Friday Is for Freebies – Mission of God Study Bible
This week’s giveaway features the Mission of God Study Bible.
The Mission of God Study Bible was edited by Ed Stetzer and Philip Nation and is the latest HCSB study Bible from B&H Publishers. It encourages followers of Jesus Christ to see their everyday life from God’s perspective and have His heart for people. It’s a reminder that we live around people in desperate need of redemption and reconciliation with God, which can only be found in Jesus. The mission of God has never been just for specialists; it is for all believers to live out through their daily lives and by sharing the good news of what God has done through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus.
To be eligible to win, answer the following question:
What is the coldest temperature you’ve experienced so far this winter where you live?
The deadline to enter is midnight CST this Saturday. We will draw one winner from the entries on Monday morning.
I also want to invite you to the special webcast Ed will be hosting this Monday, January 28, at 3:00 PM Eastern (2:00 PM Central) on his blog at EdStetzer.com. He’ll be giving away a few dozen copies of the Mission of God Study Bible during the show, so if you don’t win this one there are plenty more to be had. Here’s a short video with more information on the webcast.

The Perfectly Unified Church
I like to have fun with my own denomination and the churches affiliated with it. I often joke that where there are two Baptists gathered in His name, there are at least three opinions.
But the lack of unity in many churches is a serious manner. Church splits, congregational infighting, and church divisiveness are more common than we often like to admit. Not too long ago, I heard my co-worker at LifeWay, Eric Geiger, make a presentation on church unity. Actually, he largely dealt with training and equipping the saints to do the work of ministry in his presentation, but he beautifully tied that issue with church unity.
Training Results in Unity
Eric simply demonstrated the obvious truths from Scripture. Unfortunately, I don’t always see the obvious, so his presentation was both enlightening and encouraging to me. His thesis was straightforward: If pastors equip or train others to do ministry, there will be unity in the church. How do we know this reality? It’s clearly stated in Scripture:
“And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness” (Ephesians 4: 11-13, HCSB).
For the sake of brevity, let’s deal only with the role of pastors/teachers. Note these truths from the text:
Christ (He) personally gave this role. It was important to Him, so it has to be important to us.
The role of pastors is not so much to do ministry, as it is to train or equip others to do ministry.
If pastors fulfill this role, the body of Christ is built up.
As the body of Christ is built up, the believers become unified in the faith.
The passage is clear. As pastors are more involved in training others to do ministry, there will be greater unity in the church.
The Problem
As we began to research this issue in local congregations today, we uncovered some sobering statistics. Almost all pastors we surveyed affirmed their critical role in training others to do ministry. But almost three fourths of these pastors had no plans to do so. For most pastors, the reasons behind this gap were simple: they either didn’t know how to take the next steps, or they didn’t feel like they had the time to do so.
The Opportunity
At LifeWay, we began to make this issue a major priority. We saw a great opportunity to provide almost unlimited training in this digital age that could not be done in earlier years. So we created something that will be convenient for the church leaders and those being equipped at an affordable cost for all churches. In May of this year, we will launch Ministry Grid, an incredible tool for developing leaders in your church. We are excited to work alongside church pastors, staff, and lay leaders in this way, and I will share with you more about this resource later.
Let me hear from you. How is your church equipping and training others to do ministry? What are some stories you can share to help other churches? What are some lessons we can learn from you?
The text is clear. As pastors/teachers do more equipping and training, the church will become more unified. It’s just that important.

Pastoral Advice from Fred Luter
As I’ve written before, it has been my joy to call Fred Luter my friend for many years. Many years ago, when I was serving as dean and on the faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the campus newspaper did a profile on me. I remember the question, “Who is your favorite living preacher?” I answered without hesitation, “Fred Luter.” My opinion has not changed in the fifteen years since then.
Fred and I seem to cross paths quite frequently. We seem to have a lot in common:
We have spoken on the same platform dozens of times. One of my greatest fears is following Fred Luter speaking.
We are about the same age.
We began serving as pastor close to the same time.
We both married our high school sweethearts.
Fred served on the board of LifeWay Christian Resources when I was voted as president.
But the commonalities end there. In reality, I could never come close to comparing favorably to a man like Fred Luter. I have rarely known a greater preacher. I have rarely known a greater pastor. I have rarely known a greater family man. I have rarely known a greater man of God.
Simply stated, Fred Luter is one my favorite people. Period. That’s why I am pleased to share these short videos LifeWay recently shot with Fred for the Pastors Today newsletter. Enjoy.

The Main Reason People Leave a Church
Numbers of gifted persons and organizations have studied the phenomenon of the church “back door,” the metaphorical way we describe people leaving the church. And there will always be the anticipated themes of relocation or personal crises. We should recognize those issues, though we can respond to the latter more than the former.
But all the research studies of which I am aware, including my own, return to one major theme to explain the exodus of church members: a sense of some need not being filled. In other words, these members have ideas of what a local congregation should provide for them, and they leave because those provisions have not been met.
Certainly we recognize there are many legitimate claims by church members of unfulfilled expectations. It can undoubtedly be the fault of the local congregation and its leaders.
But many times, probably more than we would like to believe, a church member leaves a local body because he or she has a sense of entitlement. I would therefore suggest that the main reason people leave a church is because they have an entitlement mentality rather than a servant mentality.
Look at some of the direct quotes from exit interviews of people who left local congregations:
“The worship leader refused to listen to me about the songs and music I wanted.”
“The pastor did not feed me.”
“No one from my church visited me.”
“I was not about to support the building program they wanted.”
“I was out two weeks and no one called me.”
“They moved the times of the worship services and it messed up my schedule.”
“I told my pastor to go visit my cousin and he never did.”
Please hear me clearly. Church members should expect some level of ministry and concern. But, for a myriad of reasons beyond the scope of this one blogpost, we have turned church membership into country club membership. You pay your dues and you are entitled to certain benefits.
The biblical basis of church membership is clear in Scripture. The Apostle Paul even uses the “member” metaphor to describe what every believer should be like in a local congregation. In 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, Paul describes church members not by what they should receive in a local church, but by the ministry they should give.
The solution to closing the back door, at least a major part of the solution, is therefore to move members from an entitlement mentality to a servant mentality. Of course, it is easy for me to write about it, but it is a greater challenge to affect it.
May I then offer a few steps of a more practical nature to help close the back door by changing the membership mentality? Here are five:
Inform church members. Though I do not have precise numbers, I would conjecture that more than one-half of church members do not have a biblical understanding about church membership. Providing that information in a new members’ class can move an entire congregation toward a servant mentality.
Raise the bar of expectations. We have dumbed down church membership in many congregations to where it has little meaning. Clarify expectations of members. Again, doing so in the context of a new members’ class is a great way to begin.
Mentor members. Take two or three members and begin to mentor them to become biblical church members. After a season, ask them to mentor two or three as well. Let the process grow exponentially.
Train members. Almost 100 percent of pastors agree that their role is to train and equip members. But almost three-fourths of these pastors have no plans on how they will train them (see Ephesians 4:11-13). I will address this issue more fully on my blog next Wednesday.
Encourage people to be in small groups. Those in Sunday school classes and small groups are more likely to be informed and functioning church members. In others words, there is a much greater likelihood of a member with a servant mentality to be in a small group than not.
What are you doing in your church to close the back door? What are you doing to move members from an entitlement mentality to a servant mentality?
