Guest blog and Giveaway with Rachel Carrington

My Vampires—My HeroesRachel Carrington
A reader asked me on a blog what I did to make my vampires different as there are so many vampire romances out today. It was an excellent question and one that really had me thinking. In the end, I told her that it wasn’t a matter of making the vampires different; it was a matter of making the heroes inside them different.
Readers of vampire romance have come to expect a certain mythology, and some don’t appreciate the authors who change the rules of the game, so to speak. There are, of course, exceptions. Stephanie Meyer created a vampire world that was vastly different from any other, and she gained quite an extraordinary fan base, myself included. But for the most part, vampire romance aficionados want the vampires who can be killed by stakes, sunlight, and fire.
When I write vampires, I don’t change much of the lore. They all stay away from crosses, bay windows, and the beach. It’s the man inside the vampire that I change. How they deal with who they are, how they interact with humans while wanting to drink from their jugular, and most of all, how they fall in love.
In every book I write, I try to create a different hero; it’s a little more challenging when I’m writing a vampire as their exterior is similar to the last vampire I created. So I come up with unique ways for them to satisfy their thirst for blood or to have it removed. Or I throw in other conflicts and challenges that don’t just revolve around what they are like a curse from a witch, a lover who begins killing his kind, or a human who goes looking for a vampire because she needs a specific guide in the mountains of Romania.
To me, it’s most important to write about the man that still exists within the exterior of the vampire. That’s what makes him still capable of love and passion and someone who can look forward to eternity instead of dreading it.

Book One

Though damned as a vampire, Rhad Valentine has been given what some might call the gift of psychic sight. He sees it as a constant reminder of real life going on without him—a life he cannot live.
Mischa Bonovich is on a desperate mission to find her missing sister, Rianna. Led to the mountains of her homeland by the faint call of Rianna’s voice, Mischa needs Rhad’s gift and his strength.
Wild hunger, both foreign and welcome, drives Rhad to his knees. He’d never held a woman so soft. Kissed one so responsive. And in spite of his inner protests, he’ll do anything to help her. Anything to feel just one more touch of her hand.
In the dark forests of Romania, Rhad’s desire won’t be quenched until he tastes what only Mischa can offer, but first, he must save her from a man who has nothing to lose. A man who holds a deadly secret that could tear Mischa from Rhad’s arms before love can happen.

Morgan Hannah MacDonald's Top Ten Favorite Scary Movies

Morgan Hannah MacDonald's Top Ten Favorite Scary Movies

1)  The Exorcist: 1973. Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair and Max Von Sydow. I can't help it but that movie still freaks me out. Especially since they added the scene on the stairs. I couldn't even see this movie when it came out because they rated it X.
2)  Black Christmas:  1974. Margot Kidder, Olivia Hussey and John Saxon. You have to see the original, the remake was horrible. The voice on the phone will give you chills. Scared me so bad I wanted to leave after the first murder but couldn't. My friend and I were seeing it at a drive-in theater (shows how old I am)  and when we tried to leave, all the cars started honking at us, so we had to stay! LOL
3)  Eyes of Laura Mars: 1978. Faye Dunaway and Tommy Lee Jones. Best ad campaign ever! For months you would see ads, as well as a bill board on Sunset Boulevard with just a set of eyes. No explanation.  As time went by the billboard added 'Eyes of Laura Mars" but nothing else. Finally it finished the ad when it was time for the movie to come out.  Laura Mars sees through the killers eyes which makes her blind to all that goes on around her. Very suspenseful. Love this movie!
4)  The Other: 1972.  The stars are all Swedish even though the film is American. It's about a good twin and an evil twin. Very Creepy.  I highly recommend you look this one up.
5)  The Omen: 1976. Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. What can I say, this is a classic. At the time women were actually naming their sons Damien. Who would do such a thing? Obviously the 1970's had some good horror films! LOL. Of course, I was young and impressionable at the time.
6)  The Ring:  2002. Naomi Watts. Original concept. That little girl was spooky!
7)  The Grudge:  2004. Sarah Michelle Geller. Like The Ring, it's a remake of a Japanese horror film. Another creepy scene on the stars.
8)  The Shining:  1980. Jack Nicholsen and Shelly Duval. Another Classic.
9) Nightmare on Elm Street: 1984. Johnny Depp and John Saxon again.  I rented this movie knowing nothing about it. I started watching it at night, alone. I had to turn it off. The next day I watched it with my mother. We were so engrossed in the film that when the phone rang, we jumped and screamed! LOL  The premise was very imaginative I thought.
 10)  What Lies Beneath: 2000. Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. Not really scary, but a good ghost mystery. The ending is classic Hitchcock.
I have to add one more thing to this list. The TV show, American Horror Story. I loved season one. You definitely have to rent this! Talk about spooky!!!

Spirits in the Trees
by Morgan Hannah MacDonald
SOME FAMILY SECRETS ARE BETTER LEFT BURIED.
An abandoned house, a psychotic killer, and a victim reaching out from the grave. A woman must unearth deadly family secrets before she becomes a ghost herself.
Madeline Anderson goes to Isabelle Island, Washington, to sell a family home abandoned over forty years before. Bizarre things occur the moment she steps on the property. Inside the dilapidated old house, items move about of their own accord. Strange noises come from empty rooms. She has a vivid, recurring dream of a woman running for her life. The wind rustling through the trees sounds like urgent, murmuring voices. When the cacophony dies down, one single word emerges:
MADELINE,MADELINE,MADELINE.
At first, Doug Lindstrom, the hot fireman helping Maddy restore the old home, doesn't believe anything  is going on. He’s certain Maddy is jumping at shadows because she heard the local kids call the house haunted. That is, until he witnesses horrific violence himself that he can't explain away. After Maddy’s life is threatened not once, but twice, Doug vows there will not be a third time.
EVIL DOES EXIST.

While searching for answers, Maddy uncovers astonishing secrets about her aunt's past. Finding more questions then answers, she digs deeper until she stumbles across evidence of a cold case involving a serial killer nicknamed The Seaside Strangler. Together, Doug and Maddy must unmask a killer. The lives they save just might be their own.
WARNING: This book contains mild language, explicit sex and graphic violence.

July 27 InterviewThe Avid Readerhttp://the-avidreader.blogspot.com/

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
MCJ: I have always wanted to write since I was a very young child; as young as eight years old! But I was a reader first; the earliest I can remember drowning myself in a book was 3 or 4years old. Fascinated by the pictures, wanting to be in the world they described. I have always loved paranormal/fantasy…magic, power, beings that are so vastly different from anything that can be considered “real” life! Although, the characters in my favorite books and in those I write have become so real, I find the lines of fantasy/reality blurred at timesJ But this genre, pulls me out of the regular and the mundane, and allows me to escape and really, let’s be honest…its’ a great opportunity to live through the characters; having some wicked powers/skills and in love with the hottest guys, who remain young and beautiful forever!:)
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
MCJ: Other than the obvious portrayals of being extremely handsome…Vampires although the ultimate “bad boys”, have an unrivaled ability for passion and to commit to an unshakeable bond between themselves and the one they love. Yes, there is that element of danger…that the vampire lover could cross the line to predator…I believe it’s that thrill of danger that fuels the attraction for these beings.
What inspired you to write this book?
MCJ: To be honest, the idea came about due to the town where I live. It isn’t really considered a small city but it is quiet…normal really. But one day while driving, I began to imagine what if in this all American city; Vampires were actually the ruling class????Well, that started my thoughts swirling, and one day I saw the Pythian Children’s Home which is located locally. It is designed as a  medieval castle… which I thought somewhat unique, since we’re dead smack in a Southwestern townJ So, that is where I limited the story…instead of a ruling class of Vampires, I made a class full of themJ;so, within this murky clay of thought is where the idea originatedJ

Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
MCJ: I have to have solitude, my music (Rock) and gummy bears!
Do you write in different genres?
MCJ:Presently, I foresee staying within the fantasy/paranormal genre. But Science Fiction has caught my interest, and one day I may look in that direction.

When did you consider yourself a writer?
MCJ: When the kids at my After School center said…”So when’s the next one coming”?:)
Although, I know the correct answer, is when you begin putting pen to paper, of fingers to keyboards…that is when you are a writer; even if no one else has read your masterpiecesJ
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
MCJ: Curled up in my favorite throw, reading on my Kindle; or watching True blood, Vampire Diaries etc.; Or pretty much, any show with unsuspecting individuals in a small town; and paranormal beings are wreaking havoc of the “normal” characters everyday lives!:)
(RR- we have a lot in common, those are my guilty pleasures too- reading, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Teen Wolf and any other show with apranormal stuff and I have my special throw blanket dubbed the fuzzy LOL)
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
MCJ:I LOVE music, I find it very inspiring…I believe the coolest thing would be if we could all walk around with our own soundtracks! We wouldn’t have to say how our day is going; the music would say it all! , lol unfortunately, this cannot be, so I have my own radio segment to fill that needJ

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
MCJ: Not a specific one, anywhere I can find a quiet nook, with my favorite blanket and book/Kindle is good for meJ

White Raven: Sword of Northern Ancestors By Irina Lopatina Genre: Fantasy

The fate of Areya rests with the lost sword Urart. Will White Raven retrieve it before it's too late?

In the kingdom of Areya, humans, animals, and the magical creatures that inhabit the Eternal Forest have long coexisted peacefully, but now something is horribly wrong. A terrifying stream of monstrous creatures has begun to emerge from the secret depths of the earth, terrorizing all of Areya's native inhabitants. From the tiny, wise drevalyankas to the bellicose cave-dwelling gnomes to the devious kikimoras who gather roots and herbs in the marsh, everyone is in danger.

With the aid of Urart, the magical sword that has been passed down from the time of the ancient northern ancestors, Grand Duke Vlady can offer temporary protection to his people. But Prince Vraigo, Vlady's nephew, who is endowed with magical power himself, understands that the source of the evil monsters must be found if there's any hope of survival. Along with a motley crew of his forest-dwelling friends, Vraigo sets off on a perilous quest in search of the koschei, the powerful, corrupt Archmagus whose mission is the destruction not just of Areya, but of the entire world.

As if this weren't bad enough, Urart disappears from the duke's stronghold. Without it, Areya is doomed, and only Vraigo, the White Raven, can possibly get the sword back. This journey requires Vraigo to use all of his keen wits and magical abilities, as well as to ally himself to dangerous creatures like yagas and werewolves, natural enemies of man, and precipitates the young prince into the most bewildering, complex challenge he has faced yet: life in the twenty-first century.

About the Author:
Irina Lopatina lives and works in Siberia, Russia, but her homeland has an even more wonderful and exotic name: Altai. It is a unique place where old Altai Mountains rise high up to the sky, centuries-old forests stretch out as in ages past, and mighty Siberian rivers flow along the plains.
Altai is one of the few places in the world where huge, densely populated cities coexist with pristine wild places. Moreover, this is an area of the earliest human civilizations, through which the great migration of people from eastern lands to Europe once took place.
While studying at the Altai State University, Irina devoted much attention to the past of her native land. As a student, she went to the archaeological sites of ancient settlements located on the mountain plateau, where it was only possible to arrive on foot. She remembers moments when it was quite easy to imagine how the ancient people had lived, what creatures neighbored them, and what adventures took place in these vast spaces.
Irina needed take only a small leap from there to White Raven, his friends, and his enemies who were ready to begin a journey through the Eternal Forest of Areya. Of course, it would have been much more difficult for her to create her stories if Irina had not been inspired early on by the works of many excellent fantasy and science fiction writers such as J.R. Tolkien and Ursula Le Guin, the Russian authors Nick Perumov and Svyatoslav Loginov, as well as the wonderfully charming Russian fairy tales where a brave prince, his faithful grey wolf and the evil koschei always live.
And so it happens that Irina's novels are the stories of a distant, semi-fantastic land which, who knows, may still exist next door to us.

About the Illustrator
Even as a child, Igor Adasikov knew that he would be an artist. While studying at an art school, he devoted much of his time practicing classical drawing, seeking to depict the world around him as fully as possible.
His works often won awards in Russian art contests, and he continued his education at Moscow Art Institute. After graduating from the Institute, Igor worked as an artist preferring realistic painting, such as portrait and landscape.
However, his rich imagination still needed an outlet and manifested itself in full while illustrating the fantasy novel, White Raven: The Sword of Northern Ancestors. Here, in the surprising fairy-tale world, void of any boundaries, the artist found the nourishment to feed his creativity. Having traveled with the heroes through the whirlwind of adventures, he worked to give readers a visible image of Areya, bringing to life the magical creatures that inhabit the land, and making friends with the heroes of this fascinating story.

Interview with Lee Rudnicki Author of My Immortal The Vampires of Berlin

Hi Lee.  Please tell our readers a little bit about yourself.
Hello, thank you for having me on Fang-tastic Books. My name is Lee Rudnicki, I’m an LA-based writer and film producer.  I’m also an entertainment lawyer, drummer, music producer and rabid 49ers fan blah blah blah.
I also have little to no ability to cook, I think I’m better at video football than I really am, and I recommend against fighting wild chimpanzees without body armor or at least a really big stick.  I also reserve the right to put a ridiculous statement or two in this interview, in the interest of making it fun and informative for your readers.
Fair enough. So, what is My Immortal?
My Immortal is a supernatural action adventure, set in present day Berlin, and also on the last day of World War II. Structurally, the book is like Titanic; present day scenes serve as bookends to a tale from the past.
I should say one thing up front.
My Immortal is not a teen vampire romance, or anything even close to that genre.  Nobody is going to the prom.  This particular vampire story is filled with intense violence and adult language and situations, and most of it takes set in the middle of one of the most terrible and bloody wars the world has ever seen. This is not meant for little kids or the faint of heart. Reader discretion advised.
What inspired you to write My Immortal?
My Immortal wasn’t really a product of inspiration, the creative process was more the mysterious journey of a novel that brought itself to life.
What do you mean? How did this inspiration come about?
Well, let's start from the top. In the case of the My Immortal, the screenplay came first. Which is the reverse of the usual creative process in the rest of the Free World, and most of North Korea.
You see, a few years ago, I wrote the screenplay in the UCLA professional screenwriting program. When the program was over, I entered the script in the Terror Film Festival, and promptly won the best screenplay award.  I was feeling great about it, but months later, the reality of getting a new World War II screenplay read in Hollywood set in.
Sight unseen, My Immortal was perceived as just another expensive so-called period piece.  In fact, the first agent I spoke to about the script literally laughed out loud when I said “World War II.”  Even though My Immortal was different than anything I had ever seen in the genre, there was a wacky barrier to entry based on the time period and mistaken assumptions, so people were not reading it.
Plan B.  As a producer, I had to find a way to introduce My Immortal to people that did not involve putting it under a stack of 700 scripts and hoping for the best.
Long story short, I decided to write the novel. Frankly, the reality took longer and was far more difficult than the theory.  In fact, I probably never would’ve started writing a novel had I known how [bleep] hard it was going to be.  Those of you have written a novel know exactly what I’m talking about.
The good news is, writing the novel unexpectedly transformed the My Immortal story (and screenplay) into something better, more vibrant and more dynamic than the original, and it also turned out to be a fantastic creative experience that helped the development of the film immensely.
As the story goes, I self-published My Immortal last year.  The novel took off, and I was lucky enough to get a book-signing event in Burbank, CA, at the horror bookstore Dark Delicacies, paired with famous author Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.
Kaboom. Lightening struck.  Entertainment Weekly Magazine surveyed Dark Delicacies and ranked My Immortal #3 for best selling horror fiction in the April 11, 2011 issue. Shortly thereafter, I signed with 23 House, the publisher that really understood the creative direction of the project.
Voila. Here we are.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
I tend to go by a rule of screenwriting pragmatism; each character’s name should start with a different letter.  That way, readers will tend not to confuse characters during a quick first read (which is all you may get).  For this novel, the challenge for the 1945 portion was to find German names that were time-period appropriate, but also not be so strange to American ears.  Sebastian and Wolf turned out to be great solutions.  And of course, there is Pig Face. Most people’s favorite character names are Rodika, Zina and Dumitra, the seductive but murderous vampire assassins who were sent to rescue Eva from the Nazis.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Eva, our heroine.  When Sebastian and Wolf find her in Berlin Cathedral, the young vampire is delirious; the Gestapo drugged her with garlic serum.  Eva’s character evolves over the course of the escape from Berlin, as the drugs wear off.  The challenge was making Eva a compelling character, especially in the early scenes when the powerful drugs in her blood are at their most potent, when she can barely speak.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
These characters in My Immortal wrote themselves.  Every night, I would sit down and join them on the journey in Berlin.  I simply wrote down what happened.  I know that sounds odd, but this was a very different creative experience for me.
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research?
I travelled to Berlin and Prague to research the story and retrace the steps of Sebastian, Wolf and Eva as they escaped from Berlin.  I wanted to make sure the historical context was accurate, and the scenes I was writing correctly captured the essence of each city.  It took a ton of time, travel and research in Europe, but the My Immortal story fits within the historical framework of the war.  It could have happened. Maybe it did.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
I wrote a few surreal it not bizarre dinner scenes.  One of them takes place in Prague Castle, where a renegade vampire reveals the identity of Eva, and the men suddenly find themselves in a position to win the war for the Nazis.  That’s the exact moment when the tale gets out of control.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
The premise behind My Immortal is that there is, and has been for a very long time, a shadow vampire government in Europe.
Vampires preyed on humans for thousands of years, but they took only what they needed. For centuries, the humans remained blissfully unaware of the existence of the vampire nation. That equation changed when the Gestapo captured Eva in the woods just outside of Brasov, Romania.
At first, the war seemed like all of the wars that preceded it. But the vampires soon found that the Nazis were different. They came to understand that Hitler’s thirst for blood would not be quenched until all life on the planet was extinguished. The vampires viewed the Nazis as the embodiment of true evil; a crime against the Earth…
When did you consider yourself a writer?
I learned about structure at UCLA, and was able to finish my first full-length motion picture screenplay.  That’s when I finally felt as if I had written “something.”
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
The designers of the computer game Civilization V should all be thrown in a jail, and every copy of that game destroyed.  Well, not really.  But 1% less will power and self-control on my end, and I’m dropping out of life and focusing 24/7 on to ruling the virtual Earth with the French Empire.  Or maybe the Egyptians.  Or … maybe …  You get the picture.  The game is evil.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I really enjoy spending time with my wife Rumiko and out miniature Australian Sheppard, Buzz the Dog.  If you want to see Buzz do his amazing cookie-on-nose trick, here it is.
Where is your favorite place to write? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I believe that where you when you write dramatically affects what and how you write.  So, whenever I travel, I try to carve out some writing time.  I actually finished the final draft of My Immortal on a balcony in Cannes.
What can readers expect next from you?
I’m working on the sequel to My Immortal, which is set in Japan. I also just published Tale of a Drum Line
Where can readers find you on the web?
The book is available on Amazonand Barnes and Noble, and the best place right now to get information on My Immortal is our Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/vampiresofberlinIf you are interested, you can check out my blog at http://leerudnicki.wordpress.com/or find me on Twitter at http://twitter.com/drumlaw80.
Do you have a theme song for your novel?
Actually, we do. We have released the first song from the soundtrack on iTunes, As The Blood Flows, by Trip Device.  That song contains dialogue from the novel, performed by a vampire.
Can you give us an excerpt from the book?
Eva sat on the riverbank as the sounds of battle resounded in the distance. She didn’t say anything when Sebastian sat down next to her. Nor did he expect her to.
“Guten Abend,” he said. “Not the best time for a picnic on the riverbank, is it?”
Eva didn’t respond.
Sebastian didn’t believe in vampires until he met one. Until one bit him. Now, the sight of blood excited him and his strength was growing by the hour. He knew what the other men only suspected. Eva was a vampire and he was turning into one himself. He also instinctively knew that their survival depended on Eva, for reasons known only to God—assuming that God was still in Berlin. Somehow, he needed to get through to her. He tried again.
“Eva. Do you understand me? Do you know where you are? Please, talk to me.”
If Eva heard him, she didn’t show it. Opening the lines of communication with the young vampire was going to be far more difficult than Sebastian had anticipated. Discouraged, he turned her towards him. “Look at me. That Luftwaffe pilot over there…”
“Axel,” Eva said softly.
“Yes. Axel is about to die from burns he got when a vampire torched his face. He got hurt saving you.”
Eva blinked hard and then pointed to the sky. “It’s in the stars, Sebastian.”
Sebastian looked up. There were no stars, only a dark gloom lit by the flash of sporadic explosions. Before he could ask another question, an artillery shell exploded in the river. The freezing water that cascaded over them brought him crashing back to reality.
Sebastian got up and took Eva’s hand. It was time to go…

Wind, Fire, Water, or Earth—Which Elemental Would You Be? Guest blog with S.A. Bolich

Wind, Fire, Water, or Earth—Which Elemental Would You Be?
I suppose there are a million games on the internet related to what your fantasy name is in such-and-such a world or what sort of witch/wizard/magical animal you’d be if you had a choice. My world of Metrenna is a little different. There’s lots of magic, oh yes, but it’s all related to controlling one of the four elementals: living fire, the stormy Hag, tricksy Water, and restless Earth Mother.
If you had a choice between dancing Fire under control, singing to Wind, hearing the voices of every drop of water everywhere, or stilling the quaking earth, which would you choose? Imagine dribbling sparks from your hand or facing down the angry fire trying to eat your home. What if you could smell the flowers of summer from hundreds of miles away in your winter-locked lands or sing notes of matchless beauty to control the storms? What if you heard Water planning to assault the shore, or discovered Fire plotting rebellion against Earth Mother? What would you do? Which of my talented folk would you rather be: Firedancer, Windrider, Seaborn or Delver?
For me, having been allowed the joy of discovering each of the clans’ abilities from the inside, so to speak, it’s a really tough choice. I like to swim, but it scares me a little, so I doubt I would pick water, though I love to listen to it and watch it rushing endlessly by in mountain streams.
Fire is hypnotic and fascinating, but I’m personally not much of a dancer. The very idea of wrapping myself in fire and controlling it with every movement of my fingers and body, though, is exceptionally cool to contemplate. I could definitely get behind that, as my Firedancers do.
Wind...now there’s a definite possibility. I used to sing reasonably well, and I love listening to the wind. When I was a kid I liked to cup my hand just outside the car window and feel it rushing around my fingers until my mother would yell at me to get my hand back inside. I love writing my Windriders, who can weave wind between their hands and roll it into balls and literally shift things that need shifting with it.
Earth...who hasn’t dug their bare toes into warm earth or cool mud and laughed, connecting themselves to the most basic thing that feeds and grounds us all? Without the earth to stand on where we would be? Floating around as entirely different beings, thank you very much, and that would be a whole different story, wouldn’t it? And when the earth shakes, wouldn’t you love to be able to stop it? My Delvers can...if they can remember how.
Oh, dear, they’re just all too much fun. I guess I will just have to keep writing about them instead. But I would love to hear from you which you’re rather be, and why!

Number of pages: 394Word Count: 133,000
Book Description:
What do you suppose that fire thinks about as it cooks your dinner behind its cage of containment stone? Jetta ak'Kal knows—but no one listens to a Firedancer who has failed to protect her assigned village from an assault by living flame.
The Ancient, the strange, elemental fire imprisoned at the heart of the world, took her lifemate, her reputation as the most talented Dancer of her generation, and nearly her life. Now her clan demands she redeem herself, yet seem strangely indifferent to her insistence that the Dance itself that has always bound the Ancient seems to be failing. Assigned to Annam, a village with no previous experience of fire, Jetta and her new partner, Settak, find themselves battling the naive ignorance of the villagers, the hostility of arrogant Windriders whose mastery of air could kill them both with the flick of a finger, and occasionally each other as they struggle to find new and more powerful forms of the Dance.
Pursued by fire crawling up through every crack, by a new love she does not want, and a nagging suspicion that there is more to her assignment than her clan bothered to tell her, Jetta must forge unprecedented alliances in this high and beautiful place before the Ancient breaks free—for if it does, there will no longer be anything left to fight for.
