Praise:
"The Young Adult Writer's Journey is a 'Must Have' at your fingertip reference for anyone who writes (or wants to write) for or about kids. Engaging text with topical and thought-provoking insights leading from idea to submission . . . and beyond to populate a story with believable characters young readers can relate to."—Nancy Gideon, Award-Winning author of the By Moonlight series
“The trouble with “how to” books on creativity is that they usurp creativity. Not so with this very insightful guide for YA writing. If it doesn’t become a standard or even a classic among reference books, it will be an oversight. Janet Schrader-Post and Elizabeth Fortin-Hinds have all the marinated smarts and credentialed experience to pull this off, and they do! No dictated wisdom from on high here, no grafted creativity, THE YOUNG ADULT WRITER’S JOURNEY is accessible, motivational and a clear map that leaves plenty of room to discover for anyone wanting to explore their creative side.”-Thomas Sullivan, Pulitzer-nominated author of THE PHASES OF HARRY MOON

Excerpt:
When you talk about world-building, many writers think you’re talking about fantasy lands like Narnia, Westeros, Panam or Middle Earth. For most teens, school is their world. What kind of home life they have is their world and these worlds need to be just as complicated as Narnia. Well-developed teen worlds like Hogwarts, North Shore High School, home of the Mean Girls, Rydell High School of Grease, and Panem of Hunger Games are so well-developed they seem real, and you remember them as though they were a place you visited.
To create a real world for teens in our times, you really need to know them: what they do every day, what they like, what motivates them, the environment in high schools and many other details. Home life for kids is very different from twenty or even ten years ago. It takes two incomes now to support a growing family or to succeed, so both parents most likely work. This leaves kids as young as nine or ten at home alone for long periods of time (or even younger, unfortunately). The enemy of these parents is the school holiday, and it seem like there’s more than ever. These parents have no idea what to do with their children. Many can’t afford childcare, so the kids are home alone. It’s a thing you must think about when writing for them.
Children come from all levels of society. Poor kids will view the world through different eyes than kids who have well-off parents. Kids living with a single parent might have a different view of the world as well as different social structures. The kids with single parents or working parents might have to go hungry on weekends, on school holidays and especially during the summer. It’s hard to think about, but true. There are teenagers out there who eat breakfast and lunch at school and their families provide dinner. Sometimes all they get is their school meals some days. When school is out, they scavenge and fend for themselves or they don’t eat.

About the Authors:
Elizabeth Fortin-Hinds knows kids well. She spent decades teaching teens and adults to write and improve their reading skills. As a literacy expert and certified coach, she helped both teachers from elementary to secondary and preservice graduate students learn to improve reading and writing instruction. She has taught at both the secondary and graduate level, everything from rhetoric, essays, and thesis statements, to poetry, short stories, and how to write a novel. She has learned to use both sides of her brain simultaneously, but enjoys the creative side the most, learning to play piano, draw and paint, and find time for her own writing since retiring from her “day” jobs.
A “true believer” in Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, mythic structures, she uses that lens when considering manuscripts for Tell-Tale Publishing Group, a company she founded with some friends from her critique group a decade ago.
Daughter of a Colonel, Janet lived the military life until she got out of high school. She lived in Hawaii and worked as a polo groom for fifteen years, then moved to Florida where she became a reporter. For ten years she covered kids in high school and middle school. Kids as athletes, kids doing amazing things no matter how hard their circumstances. It impressed her, and it awed her. “How wonderful teens are. They have spirit and courage in the face of the roughest time of their lives. High school is a war zone. Between dodging bullies, school work and after school activities, teens nowadays have a lot on their plate. I wrote stories about them and I photographed them. My goal was to see every kid in their local newspaper before they graduated.”
Janet love kids and horses, and she paints and writes. Now she lives in the swampland of Florida with too many dogs and her fifteen-year-old granddaughter. She started to write young adult fiction with the help of her son, Gabe Thompson, who teaches middle school. Together they have written a number of award-winning YA novels in both science fiction and fantasy.

A Magic Redemption by Tena Stetler

Mystery of the Missing Christmas Lighting Display
As Christmas approaches one family tradition is to drive the neighborhoods enjoying the Christmas lighting displays everyone puts up.  The last few years there have been less and less.  I understand, as our own lighting display has been downsized.
Last year many around our area protested a utilities rate hike in November set to reap the benefits of those who put up Christmas lighting displays.  Yes, sadly we were one of those, since the year before our December utility bill had been a lot higher than in previous years.  We couldn’t afford another huge increase, and the deliberate timing of the hike was deliberately grinchy, so we put up only the minimal lighting display. It was a sad year for enjoying Christmas lights displays.
This year, the rate hike will be put off until January as in previous years, except last year. Wise decision utilities department. The lightening displays have returned, and ours included.
The real point of this post is for many years, we watched a certain home in our area add to his homemade Christmas display and looked forward to seeing what had been added each year. It was not religious in nature, but fun.
There were Peanuts characters, then Tweety Bird and its companions, Little Mermaid, the Grinch, Disney Characters, Winnie the Pooh and pals, just to name a few, all homemade. Spotlights illumined the display.  Suddenly about four years ago, not only were there no new characters, but the display disappeared entirely. Each Christmas we checked, still the house was dark, no sign of the previously wonderful Christmas light and character display.
Had they moved, after all this is a military town, people come and go a lot? Was there a family illness or emergency that caused the display to go missing?  While we reveled in the other fantastic lighting displays, we were saddened as we drove past the dark house checking each year.
No we never knew the people who lived in that house. But we felt a connection to them watching the display grow year after year.
On December 10, 2017, we clambered into our truck, hot chocolate in hand, to go check out the neighborhood Christmas lights. With trepidation we turned the corner where the darkened house had been for several years. Lo and behold, in all its previous glory the Christmas lights and beloved characters were on the front lawn, house and roof.
We were ecstatic to see the house lit up once again, the Peanuts merry-go-round spinning slowly, all the other cartoon characters smiling broadly. No new characters, but that was all right because the decorations were back.
We took pictures, and decided to share the beloved display with you. Funny how one thing can brighten your spirits as that house did ours that night.
This year I believe we will go back to that house and knock on their door and tell them how much we have enjoyed their display throughout the years. Also how much we missed it when it was gone.  Christmas lighting is a time consuming, expensive endeavor and a labor of love. To those of you who set up Christmas displays year after year, THANK YOU!
Please share your Christmas Traditions with us in the comments.

Time seemed to go on forever as she slowed and walked backward for a while, her foot steps in the sand filling with water as she traveled along the shoreline, as if nature erased her intrusion. She turned around and continued her trek. Unaware of how long or how far she'd walked, the sudden outline of a figure, cloaked in the fog, jogging toward her caused panic to set in. Her heart pounded rapidly in her chest, she swallowed hard, adrenalin pumping through her veins as flight or fight response kicked in. Digging her good foot into the sand she prepared to attempt a sprint…to where. Where the hell am I? A quick glance around, she spied a light from a familiar building far off on the bluffs as the figure burst from the fog. A tall, wide-shouldered male with long muscular legs came closer. She froze.
Once lithe, strong and agile in her former life, a boss’s retaliation had taken a toll on her body. Now tired her gait was uneven and unsteady, even a slow sprint would likely end with her face planted in the sand.
About the Author:

Tena Stetler is a best-selling author of award winning paranormal romance. She has an over-active imagination, which led to writing her first vampire romance as a tween to the chagrin of her mother and delight of her friends. After many years as a paralegal, then an IT Manager, she decided to live out her dream of pursuing a publishing career.
With the Rocky Mountains outside her window, she sits at her computer surrounded by a wide array of witches, shapeshifters, demons, faeries, and gryphons, with a Navy SEAL or two mixed in telling their tales. Her books tell stories of magical kick-ass women and mystical alpha males that dare to love them. Well, okay there are a few companion animals to round out the tales.
Colorado is home; shared with her husband of many moons, a brilliant Chow Chow, a spoiled parrot and a forty-five-year-old box turtle. When she’s not writing, her time is spent kayaking, camping, hiking, biking  or just relaxing in the great Colorado outdoors. During the winter you can find her curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn.

Secret: Of Amber Eyes – First Meeting Between Morgan and Rowan

Secret: Of Amber Eyes – First Meeting Between Morgan and Rowan
Hi DK Davis here, author of Secret: Of Amber Eyes, with the story-stars of the newest Secret series book, released in November 2018, Morgan Redding and Rowan Marcus.
I’ve accessed a whole new world out there than anything I’d imagined since reading this book. I mean it, real-life shifters? Cougars in Michigan? Different strains of blood? An organized crime syndicate led by a shifter?
Come on, really?
That was my thought prior to learning and writing your story…
I’m excited to hear more about what it feels like to be “unique” and live in this world. Let’s get started with the questions…
DK – I understand the two of you met time at the Connor’s Wildlife Refuge and Preserve in Northern Michigan. Tell us about the first moments of that meeting.Morgan – *she glances at Rowan, their gazes connect and hold, both inhale and close their eyes, then open and refocus, turning toward me*
The first time I saw Rowan, he paused outside my aunt and uncle’s barn. I saw him through a second-story window. Something about him held me captive, like an instinctive draw. Then, he turned and looked up, his eyes glowed amber, but it happened so fast, and my heart pounded so hard, I questioned what I’d seen.
Except, what happened inside of me, the fire-storm of currants and exploding sparks, there was no question I’d experienced something impactful.
*she rolls her eyes and leans back, which appears an unusual response considering the enamored state of being she’d just described*
Rowan – *he chuckles at Morgan, and she punches his bicep, he attempts to stop laughing by pressing his lips tight*
DK – Same question to you Rowan. Do you consider what Morgan described as your first meeting?
Rowan – What Morgan describes happened, but I’m not sure I would consider that our first real meeting.
*He winks at Morgan and grasps her hand. She rolls her eyes again but keeps his hand*
That same day, we ate lunch together. Becka and Charlie introduced Morgan to me. She stared at me all through the meal.
*He chuckles*
All of my senses went on high-alert as I attempted to ignore her. An overwhelming urge to protect Morgan ruled the cougar inside me. That’s when I realized Morgan meant more in my life than merely an attractive girl. She’d tapped into my soul. In other words, we were mates for life.
DK – Morgan, now that you understand the ways of the cougar do you feel the same way as Rowan?
Morgan – Let’s just say, my world opened when Rowan and I meant. I became accepted for who I am, even though at that first meeting I hadn’t realized my full potential.
Rowan – Think about if you’d never visited your aunt and uncle’s place. Then, realize, I would still know about you, and I would not settle until I’d found you.
*They leaned toward each other and kissed as if they had no audience, gentle, yet, spirited*

Excerpt: Morgan’s point of view – 571 words
Uncle Charlie and Aunt Becka appeared to want me around. I twisted around toward the car. Mom had piled my bags on the ground near the porch steps. She stood next to the open driver’s side door, no smile, displaying all the signs of being in a hurry to leave. Her cell phone rang inside the car. “Gotta’ run honey,” she said over the glass sunroof of the Cadillac. “Our flight leaves in four hours, and I still have a few things left to pack.”I immobilized as Mom dove into the car to retrieve her phone. She tapped the screen and started the car.I didn’t wave as she shifted into gear and drove off with her cell phone stuck to her ear. She never even glanced my way. From my peripheral, Uncle Charlie and Aunt Becka looked at each other. They weren’t smiling anymore. Mom had never said a word to either of them. She didn’t say goodbye to me, either, unless I counted the trail of dust marking her exit.Good riddance. Oh, and have a happy life with Jack.My stomach fluttered, and the inside of my throat tightened like it might collapse in on itself. A load of moisture gathered, blurring my vision. Some trickled alongside my nose. I’m not crying. Extra baggage doesn’t cry; instead, I go to prison. My body relaxed as if a heavy weight shifted and slipped off. Why not make the best of this crappy situation? I was on the back burner, but not being dumped down the garbage disposal. I wiped away the water littering my face and picked up my two duffle bags. Aunt Becka scooped up my backpack; her thick long blond braid slid over her shoulder.“This way, dear. You’ve come at a good time with the weather. We’ve got a warm streak going. It isn’t normally nice warm temperatures until much later in the summer.” Aunt Becka led the way into the house. She wore faded denim shorts with a baggy sky-blue T-shirt, short white socks, and high-top hiking boots. She and Uncle Charlie were sun-browned and looked the same age as Mom. The muscles in Aunt Becka’s calves stood out as she climbed the circular stairway. She continued, “It’s still pretty cool in the mornings and later in the evenings, which makes for great sleeping weather.”At the top of the stairs, I walked across the open loft to the wall-sized window, dropping my bags mid-way.Two bright red barns stood off to one side. I recognized the green T-shirt and dark blue baseball cap Uncle Charlie wore. He pushed a wheel-barrow into one of the barns. Another guy walked behind with a huge bag of something balanced on his shoulder. The muscles in his arm bulged. He stopped in mid-step and swung around to look upward, at the window, and then at me.My stomach suddenly churned into warm pudding as our gazes collided. Rowan’s eyes glowed, amber, a trick of the sun I was sure. My breath sucked in.Aunt Becka stepped beside me and glanced out. “Oh, that’s Rowan Marcus. He’s here pretty much every day helping with chores and with the other kids that aid us at the refuge.”Rowan swung around and followed Uncle Charlie into the barn. A tremor slid through me, and then I exhaled, realizing I’d completely stopped my lungs from working. What the heck? Amber eyes?

DIY Holiday Sugar Scrub Cubes with Jena Baxter

I love special soaps and toiletries and sugar scrubs are on the top of my list. There are all kinds. Some require special attention, and others are downright easy. I don’t recommend the traditional oil and sugar, unless you want to slip and slide, then spend the day cleaning your tub. I think this one is much better, and the ingredients are easy to find. They make great gifts too.
Homemade Glycerin Soap Sugar Scrub Cubes
Once you have all your ingredients together prepare to work fast.
The first thing you need is a glycerin melt and pour soap base. Most craft stores carry it. Michael’s now carries some great detergent-free bases
You’ll also need a skin friendly oil. Fractionated coconut oil is a great choice and can be found in your supermarket. Sweet almond oil, avocado or olive oil will work well too. Macadamia is wonderful, but not as easy to find.
A SKIN SAFE scent and colorant if you want them. They will be available in the area you find the glycerin soap. Read the label, they MUST be skin safe. Don’t use candle colorant. Choose a nice fragrance for the season. Peppermint, pumpkin, cookies, or gingerbread.
Sugar – Sugar can have large or small grains. For this recipe, I use regular white granulated sugar. For a face soap, I would probably use brown sugar. For a foot soap, I’d use demerara sugar, because the granules are larger.
You will also need a mold. No need to run out and buy one for this recipe however. You can use a silicon mold or ice tray, or a sanitized milk carton cut to size; the box quarts are pretty perfect. Line it with saran wrap. You want the mold to give, so you can push the scrub out once it’s set. If you use the milk carton, you can carefully rip the paper off.

To make your Sugar Scrub
½ Cup Oil
1 Cup Melt and Pour base
2 Cups plus Sugar
Use drops or a half teaspoon to get the fragrance you want. Be cautious not to use more than necessary because even skin safe fragrance can be harsh on your skin. 1 teaspoon per pound of soap base is the limit.

Instructions: Have your mold ready before you start and remember to work fast.
Melt your soap base on very low heat. A double boiler is good, or you can microwave it in 30 second pulses. I use 30 seconds to start and stir. If I need more time, I do 15 second pulses. You don’t want it to get too hot, because soap can burn.
When the base is completely melted, pour into a large bowl, add your oil. Mix well.
Add your colorant one drop at a time until you get the shade you want but use as little as possible; too much colorant can stain washcloths. Mix well
Add up to a half teaspoon of fragrance. Mix well.
Add your sugar and mix fast; You don’t want it to harden on you.  You want to pour it as soon as possible. When it’s incorporated pour it into your mold. If it’s too thick, spoon it in and press it down.Once the soap is set. (I’d give it at least a couple of hours. I leave mine overnight). Carefully remove it from the mold, placing it onto a plate, or anything oil can’t seep through, because there is always some oil that seeps out of the soap. Work gently because the scrub will be crumbly.
Carefully cut it into 1-1 ½ inch squares.
If there is a lot of leftover oil, I cover and leave it, so it can soak some of that up. There will usually be seeping oil.
Your sugar scrub soap is finished and ready to package. You can use cellophane wraps or jars, label it, and add trinkets or bows to the top. Be creative. Just remember to use something the oil can’t seep through. I also place a note on the label telling people to be careful in the shower or tub, because oils can make it slippery.
Instructions: Break off a piece from the cube. Scrub an area until the sugar is gone. Rinse well, and pat dry. It usually takes one or two cubes per shower.
Have fun with it. Once you’ve tried these, I think you’ll be addicted.
WARNING:If someone is allergic to a food product, (Like nuts, avocados, etc.) they will be allergic to the oils produced by that item as well.

The Essential Christmas Reading List with Katherine Moore

You probably don’t have a lot of time to read around the holidays, but most of these recommendations here are “short reads” and guaranteed to re-kindle your Christmas spirit if you need a quick reminder of what the holiday is all about.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
There have been so many adaptations of Charles Dickens’ classic novella—from  Patrick Stewart’s one-man stage show to the sweet and funny Muppets version—that you may think you know the story inside out. But if you’ve never read it, you should. Dickens was a master craftsman and his handling of characters is superb. Reading the story instead of watching it is an entirely different experience and one  wealth worth your time.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson
There’s a core of social realism beneath the rollicking hijinks of this book. When a group of poor kids show up at church—they’re just there for the snacks—and hear the “Christmas story” for the first time, they are amazed and thrilled and their sudden zeal to participate in the annual Christmas pageant throws everything into disarray. In a good way. Hilarious and heart-warming in equal measure, the short book is like hot chocolate for the soul.
Walking Across Egypt by Clyde Edgerton
Seventy-eight-year-old Mattie Rigsbee bakes the best pound cake around. Self-reliant and proud, she refuses to succumb to self-pity or relinquish her independence, even though she’s “starting to lose a step.”  But then she meets a stray dog and a young delinquent who are both in need of some love and pound cake and the trio form an unlikely family. If holidays make you lonely, this book is a gently humorous reminder of the joys to be found in “accidental” families.
Dewey:  The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron
Three weeks after Christmas, on a frigid cold morning, librarian Vicki Myron found a half-frozen orange tabby kitten in the return book slot of the Spencer Public Library.  At the time, Spencer, Iowa was struggling in the wake of the recession, with failing farms and massive unemployment. Myron had turned the library into a resource center for the community and Dewey became a unifying force and a symbol of hope. This book will make you smile.
The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

There’s a Christmas feel to this book, even if it takes place in the summer. The story begins when an eccentric millionaire reaches out to a group of strangers and invites them to rent apartments (and offices and a restaurant) in a building he owns. It’s all part of a game that will determine who will inherit his vast fortune. What it’s really about, though, is friendship and love and the heart of the short book is a relationship between a little girl and a lonely old man.

Book Description:
Christmas comes but once a year but this year, Meredith Manor Hotel in scenic Silver Birch, Washington, is celebrating the holiday almost a dozen different ways. Guests can choose their "experience" from a selection of themed celebrations filled with food and drink and love and laughter. (Yes, there are recipes.)
When unemployed accountant Miranda Weston takes a temp job at the hotel her best friend's family owns, she never dreams that her friend's globe-trotting brother will show up to celebrate the holiday and complicate her life. Peter Meredith broke Miranda's heart years ago and it's still a little tender at the broken places. She's not the lovestruck teenager she once was and he's changed too, and as guests come and go and the staff works hard to deliver Christmas magic, the season works a little magic on them as well.
But Miranda's complicated relationship with the man who may just be the love of her life is only one of the storylines playing out among the hotel staff and the guests gathered for the various "Christmas Experiences" offered at the Meredith Manor Hotel.
This is a short, cozy Christmas romance novel for fans of movies like Love, Actually and the books of Katie Flynn, Trisha Ashley, and Cathy Kelly.
The Christmas Experience celebrates love and family, and all the season means.

Excerpt:
Amy came by and refilled our tea and water glasses. Alice polished off the rest of her rice and noodles. I nudged my bowl of rice closer to her. “You mind?” she asked.“All yours,” I said. I thought about the hotel as Alice prattled on, filling me in on all the gossip. It was kind of like listening to a recap of a soap opera, only with more food.“Nika and Annie are getting married, and Annie wants to move back to Austin.”“Seriously?”“Mom’s frantic because she hasn’t found anyone to replace Nika.” “Are they really going through with the wedding this time?”Nika was the hotel’s passionate Hungarian-American pastry chef who notoriously ran hot and cold with her beloved. An ACF “Pastry Chef of the Year” winner, she wouldn’t have any trouble finding work in Austin and neither would Annie, who was an emergency room nurse. They’d both have new jobs before they’d even unpacked. “Does Annie miss her family that much?”“Her dad’s got some health issues,” Alice said. “And he’s old. I think she wants to stay close.””The thought of never eating another of Nika’s honey bran muffins makes me sad,” I said.“Forget bran muffins,” Alice said. “Her carrot cake is transcendent.”Nika was going to make Alice and Lionel’s wedding cake. Alice had known from the start she wanted carrot cake, but she’d tasted pretty much every cake in Nika’s repertoire until the chef pointed out if she didn’t make a decision soon, she was going to have to buy a wedding dress in a larger size. “Carrot cake sounds good,” I said.Alice jumped on that. “If you have dinner with us tonight there’ll be carrot cake.”“You’re evil,” I said.“No,” she said. I only use my powers for good.” She signaled for the check as she changed the subject. “Did I tell you, Mom’s hired Max Hopkirk to do his one-man Christmas Carol show for the Dickens Experience night? Max Hopkirk!! “Squee,” I said.“I know,” Alice said, eyes wide. Max Hopkirk was pushing sixty, but he still had it going on with his piercing blue eyes and dramatic mane of silver-gilt hair. He was often praised for his deep and hypnotic voice, but in one interview he’d given, Max had said he thought he sounded like Eddie Izzard imitating James Mason playing God. So while he was reputed to be something of a diva, he at least had a sense of humor.“Oh yes, he is a diva,” Alice said when I asked her about that. “He had all kinds of ridiculous demands. Finally, Mom told his manager to stop being silly, that everyone knew that Max needed money and it wasn’t as if she was asking him to walk around naked juggling chainsaws .”“I’d pay money to see that,” I said.“We could post it on our YouTube channel,” Alice said. “Maybe he could do it for his encore.”“I’d like to see his Christmas Carol show,” I said.Alice started to smile again. “Staff gets in free,” she said.“You promise there’ll be carrot cake tonight?” I finally said because resistance was futile.“Yay,” Alice said.
