Leadership History Lesson for December 8th

On this day in leadership in 1901, the first Nobel prizes were awarded. They are a series of annual awards given in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace. They are awarded to people “who have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind” in the previous 12 months.

Whats the leadership lesson? As an honorable leader, think of ways that you can graciously recognize the achievements of your team, and do it as often as you can.

Coaching Blog – The Most Overlooked Gift Idea for Leaders

Heres an intangible but valuable gift-giving idea for the Hanukkah and Christmas season. Initially, it may seem self-serving, but it actually helps others. Its the gift and freedom of being yourself.

For the last ten years, Ive had the life-enriching experience of reading, re-reading, and studying a short little book titled The Gift of Being Yourself by psychologist Dr. David Benner. Normally, I dont talk about faith much in my leadership blogs; but because this book focuses on our spiritual being, this month my intuition tells me its time to share more.

The foundation for believing in yourself is to realize that Godas an act of complete and unconditional lovehas created you as a unique person with unique talents and purpose. What a confidence-building revelation!

My new coaching clip expands on this idea. Please watch, and then continue reading the blog below

Developing Self in Difficult Times

In the Vietnam POW camps, our faith in God and knowing that he had a plan and purpose for us became crucial to our survival. In our new book Captured by Love: Inspiring True Romance Stories from Vietnam POWs, many of these stories mention the importance of faith in their survival and happy life.

In the story of fighter pilot Ralph Gaither, he shares the crucial role of faith during his seven and a half years in the POW camps. After his capture and six weeks of violent torture, he was moved to the Briar Patch camp in December 1965.

It was his first Christmas (of eight) in the camps, so he began to pray for a Christmas tree. There were no trees like that available and then one afternoon, while he was being escorted by the guards to his cell, he saw a green leaf on the ground. He secretly picked it up between his toes (the guards would not allow us to pick up anything in the prison yards) and took it to his room. That little green leaf brought joy and tears to his life that first Christmas.

During the torment and aloneness, we relied heavily on hope and faith and spent much of our time meditating both in prayer and reflecting on our past. I think that entire experience helped us recognize and receive Gods love and begin to grow more authenticwe began to receive the gift of being ourselves.

Be the Natural You

Additionally, after developing and using natural talent assessments for training and coaching leaders for 27 years, its become very clear to me that…

“Every human being is created as a special person with unique talents and a special mission in life. To accomplish this mission though, you must be yourself.” [Tweet This]

How do you accept the gift of being yourself? Here are some excerpts from Dr Benner that have been helpful to me:

And you can never be other than who you are until you’re willing to embrace the reality of who you are. Only then can you truly become who you’re most deeply called to be.

Real knowing of ourselves can only occur after we are convinced that we are deeply loved precisely as we are. The fact that God loves and knows us as sinners makes it possible for us to know and love our self as a sinner. It all starts with knowing God’s love.

The way of the true self is always the way of humility. Pride and arrogance move us toward our false self, but humility and love allow us to live the truth of our being.

This past year, Ive spoken and written often about the importance of being both confident and humble, authentic and vulnerable. These are all characteristics of leaders who believe in themselves. Here are four steps that will help you believe in yourself as well as others:

Slow down and meditate. Reflect on your past and honestly take ownership of both your unique talents and your false self that you have promoted.

Be grateful for the gift of being yourself. At the same time, accept your shortcomings and commit to work to grow more in ways that honor God, yourself, and others.

Believe in yourself; find ways to use your talents. Keep your commitments and look for doors to open that will fit your unique design and interests.

Help others believe in themselves. Recognize and call out their unique talents and contributions and let them know you care about them and believe in them.

Its a busy season for all of us but lets commit to setting aside time every day to pause, reflect, and meditate and receive the gift of Gods love and the gift of being ourselves. This is a wonderful gift that keeps on giving.
