Ask These 4 Quick Questions to Check Your Character
Do you want to build trust with others? Character is a key ingredient and makes your team feel safe under your leadership. Typically, when we make a mistake and admit it and work to correct back, most people will trust us more. But that takes courage.
Ask yourself these four questions:
Have you clarified your standards and values of ethics? If not, we recommend that you start with the Honor Code shown here. You can use it to form your own standards. Does your walk match your talk? Ask yourself are you truly committed to living by these standards. Are you willing to be accountable? Do you have someone to give you counsel when you are not sure where the lines of ethics are? Who is a mentor or teammate that can help you be accountable? Do you take ownership of your mistakes and shortcomings? Do you act quickly to correct back on course i.e. apologize and make amends for your wrong actions and words? If you have doubts and fears, its going to be hard to be vulnerable and admit that you are struggling to live up to these standards.
We have the opportunity to make honorable, character-filled decisions every day to make a lasting differenceto live and lead with honor. This is the essence of respect which provides positive and powerful influence.

Leadership History Lesson for January 7th
On this day in leadership history in 1924, George Gershwin completed “Rhapsody in Blue” at the age of 26. Despite his short life passing away at only 38 years old from a brain tumor, he made a significant impact in the music world.
Whats the leadership lesson? As an honorable leader, be intentional about using your natural talents and strengths to improve the world.

Coaching Blog – Whats the Foundation for All Leadership Decisions?
(Editors note: were excited to announce a new series of coaching blogs for 2024 that focus on the leadership models that we have developed over the past 25 years. We hope that theyre helpful in your leadership.)
A picture is worth a thousand words. Data shows that visual images provide the fastest way for the majority to grab the big picture of the idea. Hence, we at Leading with Honor use models to illustrate some of the key principles of leadership.
Were going to unpack the Leadership Attributes Model below and recognize first that character is the foundation and/or core for all other leadership attributes. Sustaining good character is a daily challenge. We are humans and every one of us is tempted to step away from some of the bricks that support the foundation of good character.
As we all have seen throughout history, when character is not present the only way a leader (or country) can survive is through power and control of others, usually accompanied by a false narrative and media propaganda. Because of the growing challenges in our culture (in particular, media and politics), its a good time to focus on the importance of character.
My new coaching clip expands on this idea. Please watch, and then continue reading the blog below
Consider these related words that are synonymous with character: truthful, respectful, committed, ethical, responsible, accountable, and values driven. These behaviors are essential for a person to live and lead with honor.
But there is one more key pointyou must have courage to sustain your character. Youll see in the model that courage provides the push to give us the energy and willfulness to overcome our doubts, fears, and false pride to live and lead with character and perform all of those other attributes.
Character Examples to Show the Way
I refer to my Vietnam POW experience often because it was such a life-changing training exercise on character and honor. Repeatedly, our courageous POW leaders demonstrated character under the toughest condition. Their commitment to follow the military Code of Conduct and achieve our mission to Return with Honor was inspiring. Their example of character and courage enabled us to take torture, resist the enemy, serve honorably, and achieve our goals.
Ive written two leadership books that share stories and leadership lessons from that experience, and they are just as important today in our culture as they were during our experience in Vietnam.
The Companions of Character and Honor
I intentionally link these two words togethercharacter and honorbecause theyre so similar. Whether deciding not to take office supplies home for personal use, to more serious infractions issues that could land you in prison, they form the foundation for all lifeat work, home, and in the community.
Ten years ago, we developed a graphic that has become a manifesto for character for tens of thousands of leaders and teams called the Honor Code. These seven items can help every person sustain their character daily.
Though initially seen as simple, when were in tough situations its not easy to live by these standards. From time to time, I tend to drift away from these standards and must coach myself to own it and correct back.
Typically, when we make a mistake and admit it and work to correct back, most people will trust us more. But that takes courage.

Ask these four questions to do a quick check on your character.
Have you clarified your standards and values of ethics? If not, we recommend that you start with the Honor Code shown here. You can use it to form your own standards.Does your walk match your talk? Ask yourself are you truly committed to living by these standards. Are you willing to be accountable?Do you have someone to give you counsel when you are not sure where the lines of ethics are? Who is a mentor or teammate that can help you be accountable?Do you take ownership of your mistakes and shortcomings? Do you act quickly to correct back on course i.e. apologize and make amends for your wrong actions and words? If you have doubts and fears, its going to be hard to be vulnerable and admit that you are struggling to live up to these standards. Discuss with someone you trust or a counselor to help you believe in yourself to the point where you can courageously live by these standards and correct back quickly when you begin to drift away.
Unfortunately, we see frequent examples of poor character from leaders and politicians in the newswilling to sidestep to get their way.. But we have the opportunity to make honorable, character-filled decisions every day to make a lasting differenceto live and lead with honor. This is the essence of respect which provides positive and powerful influence. I hope that youll join me in committing to the benchmark of exceptional character and honor this year.

Leadership History Lesson for December 31st
On this day in leadership history in 1999, Russian President Boris Yeltsin resigned. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was designated acting president.
Whats the leadership lesson? Honorable leaders know that forced respect never works in the long run. Genuine respect is won with authenticity, trust, humility, and mutual respect for others.
