Calcium
Are you concerned about where you will get your calcium when you give up dairy? The truth is, calcium from animal sources may be plentiful but it’s not easily assimilated by humans. In fact the role of calcium in the body is to neutralize acid, while most dairy products are extremely acid forming. To quote Harvey and Marilyn Diamond in Fit for Life; “The irony is that people are consuming dairy products for calcium, and the existing calcium in their systems is being used to neutralize the effects of the dairy products they are eating.”
You can avoid the “two steps forward, three steps back” cycle that dairy creates by turning to plant based sources for your calcium:
kale
broccoli
collards
tofu
soy nuts
calcium fortified juice
calcium fortified, soy, rice and almond milks
Marilu has recipes in all of her Total Health Makeover books that will supply all the calcium your body needs with none of the detrimental effects associated with dairy consumption. And here at Marilu.com the website is always being updated with new recipes added all the time. Mango Cream? Vegan Pavlova? It’s all here !

Another good reason for a plant based diet !
From PCRM (Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine) there is a new study which touts the benefits of a plant based diet, specifically in relation to weight loss and hormone issues. Of course if you have severe symptoms you’ll need to work with your doctor but a good doctor is also going to have you look at your diet. Why not take the “good food” approach to managing your symptoms. This article is a short read and definitely worth your time.
Low-Fat, Plant-Filled Diet Reduces Weight and Symptoms of Menopause
Women who were encouraged to eat a low-fat diet with more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains were more likely to lose weight and reduce hot flashes and night sweats, according a new study in the journal Menopause. Researchers analyzed 17,473 postmenopausal women from the Women’s Health Initiative Dietary Modification trial and put them either in a group supported to make specific dietary changes or a control group that received minimal nutrition information and no group support. Although weight loss was not a stated goal for either group, women who adopted the low-fat diet were three times as likely to lose weight, compared with the control group, while women in the control group were twice as likely to gain weight. Women who lost weight were more likely to eliminate hot flashes and night sweats, compared with women who maintained their weight. These improvements were strongest among those who made the dietary changes.

Just Breathe !
In our recent LIGHTEN UP class the coaches shared a definition of what it means to lighten, followed by a breathing exercise. We think that both of these are worth sharing here. Allow yourself the time to do this exercise and you may find yourself feeling more relaxed, lively and LIGHTER !
Definition of Lighten: increase in cheerfulness: to become more relaxed or lively, or make somebody or something become more relaxed or lively
Of course this is just one definition but it’s one that can apply so beautifully when moving towards your healthy lifestyle goal. With that in mind try the following exercise anytime you need to relax or relieve stress:
1. Sit in a comfortable position.
2. Put one hand on your belly just below your ribs and the other hand on your chest.
3. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and breath down to your belly to push your hand out. Your chest should not move.
4. Breathe out through pursed lips as if you were whistling. Feel the hand on your belly go in, and use it to push all the air out.
5. Do this breathing 3 to 10 times. Take your time with each breath.
