Step into the ebook....

I'm stunned this massive novel has come to fruition so quickly, but here it is: Magic Mansion, the reality show where the serial readers actually got to vote magicians out of the Mansion!

Not only is the novel action-packed and fun, but the emotional notes hit some surprising depths. I feel like it's the most romantic story I've ever written.

BLURB
Professor Topaz is tired of fending off advice that he should retire in Vegas where magicians his age have an easier time finding work.

Ricardo Hart's career has sunk so low, he's resorted to shaking his moneymaker at bachelorette parties.

But there's a casting call for a new reality show called Magic Mansion that could change everything for these two gay stage magicians, one recovering from the loss of his partner, the other awe-struck by the presence of his idol. Each is poised for a critical second chance: at fame, and at love.

Who will win? Step into the Mansion, and find out....

Techie Discovery: why my PDFs images weren't showing in Adobe Digital Editions

I think a few readers are interested in the technical side of making ebooks. (Okay, I can think of two. You'd be one, Charles. I forget who else, but definitely one other person.) Anyone who finds it tedious can rest assured I'll undoubtedly post about cats, beer or the latest thing I wrote soon.

It's been making me crazy that my ebook covers and graphics weren't showing up in my PDFs when they were opened with Adobe Digital Editions. How many of my readers use Digital Editions to read PDFs? Heck, I don't know. At least one. It was the principle that bothered me.

Turned out the issue was with the way I was exporting my PDF from InDesign. I had the distiller JPG compression set to lossless jpg2000 thinking how smart I was for using an advanced jpg format that would make my covers look really crisp. Well, I finally found out that Digital Editions doesn't display jpg2000, therefore my images all disappeared.

So, back to good old crunchy compressed jpgs for me. :(

Kindle favor?

If you have bought a copy of The Starving Years through Amazon during March, would you mind looking in Manage My Kindle to see if there is an updated version available for download?

I understand that if updates are minor, Amazon will not automatically offer a re-download. I made several corrections that I found as I was proofing my paperback, but given the length of the novel, the tweaks may still be considered too "minor" for a fresh download.

The Run

Puff man's days may be numbered due to his chronic liver condition but he and Frankie are still doing the bushy-tailed freak-out run tonight (even though he's usually too wobbly to run.) I love that.

Freedom vs. Money

Lawrence Block's writing advice always feels like it's aimed directly at me...even if he wrote it thirty years ago, when I was more concerned with figuring out which LP to buy next and agonizing about how mean everyone else in high school was and how much I hated them.

His classic column on getting by on a writer's income is still an engrossing read.

"If I write something I don’t want to write, I’m giving up some personal freedom. Perhaps more important, if financial considerations induce me to forego writing something I would really like to write, I’m giving up a large measure of freedom and defeating my own purpose in having become a writer in the first place."

How food is like sex...

Food! Sex! (Do I have your attention?) What a loaded concept food is! Today I'm visiting Clare London's blog with a post on the role of food in fiction...and, yes, how writing about food is like writing about sex! It is! Really!

Snare second electronic edition

Snare
Channeling Morpheus 7

With summer ending and temperatures dipping low at night, Michael is eager to get his leather jacket back, and although Wild Bill could easily vamp any sales clerk into giving Michael some new duds, it wouldn't be quite the same as the jacket he left at his parents' house. Not unless the malls have begun selling clothing with rohypnol and ketamine sewn into the seams.

The return of the jacket comes with a price: a new cell phone from Michael's parents. Surprisingly, Wild Bill encourages Michael to keep the phone. After all, Michael wouldn't want to be the only twenty-one-year-old in the world without one. Seems innocent enough... right?

But you never know where an innocent gift will lead. Michael worries the phone may be some shiny bait, meant to lure him closer to his family, and then, college. Everyone seems so intent on getting Michael to enroll, but he's busy looking to catch a vampire.

Note: this is a re-release of Sweet Oblivion: Snare originally published in 2009 by Changeling Press
