From the Detroit Free Press: Big bats finally return as Detroit Tigers tie series, force Game 5 in Oakland

How fast was Austin Jackson's heart beating? All his failures were around him. The only way out was in front of him. Ten times he had struck out in this series - three times in this game already! - and there were two strikes on him again, in the bottom of the seventh, with two out and the bases loaded and the score tied in what could be the last game of the year in Detroit.

From the Detroit Free Press: 'Not just another game'

Verlander & Co. have one night to redo ending

We do not remember what we choose to forget. Jhonny Peralta was, for much of the season, a cheat, a rule-breaker, suspended from the game as a persona non grata. But Tuesday night, he was a hero. From the Detroit Free Press: 4 a.m. Closing Time Won't Make Us Chic

I work around drunk people. I always have. My earliest jobs were as a musician in nightclubs. I once played piano in a dive bar where I was told by the owner that if any customers wanted to sing, I had to play along with them, no matter how wasted they were. One guy kept boozily screaming at me to play "Melancholy Baby." So I did. And just as he began to slur the words into the smelly microphone, he turned, woozy, and screamed, "That's not merrrllncurly berby!"

And the owner got mad at me.

From the Detroit Free Press: Juggling act

MITCH ALBOM: Michigan opens Big Ten by alternately looking great and looking mediocre; where's the truth lie?

Juggling act

When we last left the Michigan Wolverines, they were struggling under the moon in the powerhouse football state of, um, Connecticut, trying to beat a team they should have clobbered, having almost lost the week before to a team they should have squashed.
