From the Detroit Free Press: Parents — and judge — taking it out on kids
Most of us can remember being sent to our rooms, or forced to sit at the table all night until we finished our vegetables.
Few of us were ever sent to juvenile detention for not speaking to our parents.

mitch albom: Winter comes early again and who knows what this team will look like next year
Winter began to creep into the city just after six o'clock Sunday night, courtesy of a man named Nelson Cruz - or, as he is known around here, Death. Cruz, the Baltimore Orioles' designated killer, swatted a David Price pitch in the sixth inning of a scoreless game and lifted it toward rightfield. It appeared, at first, to be a harmless foul.

From the Detroit Free Press: 'Ernie' keeps young actor working, smiling
I got to sit in on a rehearsal for "Ernie" this past week. It is a wonderful perk of creating a play, the open invitation to watch actors work. Like hearing the legendary Ernie Harwell himself, the production, for me, is like going back in time.
Especially when the players take the stage.
"Ernie," originally planned to run for three weeks, is now entering its fifth season at the City Theatre in downtown Detroit. In all that time, there have been three actors — total. Two men who played Ernie.
And one who played "the boy."

From the Detroit Free Press: Same-sex couples should cherish right to marry
In the centuries that straight Americans like me have had exclusive domain over marriage, we have managed to take it from a sacred and bindinginstitution to one that ends in divorce nearly half the time.
We're taken it from a union of fidelity to one in which 30% to 60% of spouses cheat on one another.
We've taken it from an institution designed to create economic stability to one in which "I want half!" is a common phrase.

From the Detroit Free Press: Black-like-her case is a how-to-feel issue
A white daughter is born to white parents. At some point, she identifies with being black. As a young woman, she changes her appearance, her skin, her hair, and she begins referring to herself as mixed-race. She is later assumed to be African American. She ultimately rises to the head of an NAACP chapter in Spokane, Wash., until her past is revealed and, at 37, she resigns amid scandal.
