In Memory of Ira Albom

From Mitch Albom:

Mitch and his dad, Ira

Friends, today is one of the saddest days of my life. My beloved father, Ira Albom, passed away last Friday after a long health battle. This afternoon, we will bury him beside my mother, Rhoda, who died nearly three years ago. Dad was lost the moment he said goodbye to her.

And am I lost now.

Cast adrift. That’s how it feels. Roots severed. No parents in the world. Talking with my sister and brother, we all agree that we are not ready to be the grown-...

From the Detroit Free Press: Tigers right not to give up on Brad Ausmus

On the weekend the Detroit Tigers would likely surrender the season, they chose to save one piece of it.

Their manager.

Brad Ausmus will return as skipper next year.

Al Avila, the new general manager, announced it Saturday, before a game that officially eliminated Detroit from the postseason, ruining the night for scooping media everywhere (including this news organization) who weeks ago reported that the franchise intended to fire Ausmus after the season.

From the Detroit Free Press: Lions end up on brink too early, too often

September should be must-win time in baseball, not football. But here we are. The Detroit Lions play an undefeated Denver Broncos team Sunday night with nothing less than the course of the season hanging in the balance.

Win the game, they sidestep a massive sinkhole, prove themselves to a national TV audience and perhaps gain the confidence needed to pull an upset next week in Seattle.

From the Detroit Free Press: NFL, fantasy leagues surge to risky heights

Fantasy is hardly new in football. Little kids call out players' names as they tackle. A joystick lets you move like your favorite running back. Trading cards. Jerseys with players' numbers. All part of imagining ourselves as part of the game. None of it is real. None of it is harmful.

But none of that is quite like fantasy football, a multibillion-dollar industry that is rapidly becoming a pillar that holds up the actual sport, not the other way around.

From the Detroit Free Press: Tape tells story in James Blake arrest case

Sometimes police tapes can be misleading. Not this one. Sometimes suspects demand force. Not this one. Sometimes a cop has a really good reason. Not this one.

The videotape of James Blake being arrested in New York City this past week leaves nothing to the imagination. Blake, a former tennis star, is the portrait of relaxation, leaning against the front of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, waiting for a ride, when a burly, plainclothes police officer comes barreling in like a blitzing linebacker, grabs Blake's left arm, then the back of his neck, and forces him face down to the sidewalk.

From the Detroit Free Press: Michigan's Harbaugh plays down key win Saturday

Jim Harbaugh, perhaps the most energized man in Michigan football history, raced out with his team on Saturday, but unlike the players he did not leap to touch the giant blue banner.

He was saving those moves for later.

Oh, he had plenty of them at Michigan Stadium. Spinning, screaming, gesturing, imploring, even mock drop-kicking. Much of this was due to the referees' calls, some of it was due to the Wolverines' mistakes and the rest of it was due to Harbaugh being the Energizer Bunny's role model.

From the Detroit Free Press: SHOCKTOBER

Tigers swept by Orioles

SHOCKTOBER

mitch albom: Winter comes early again and who knows what this team will look like next year

Winter began to creep into the city just after six o'clock Sunday night, courtesy of a man named Nelson Cruz - or, as he is known around here, Death. Cruz, the Baltimore Orioles' designated killer, swatted a David Price pitch in the sixth inning of a scoreless game and lifted it toward rightfield. It appeared, at first, to be a harmless foul.
