South African economy - Too many cooks?
On the occasion of the announcement of the goverment's new economic growth path, Zapiro's cartoon looks at the crazy mix of players and policy makers influencing the economy and trying to solve the problem of growth and job creation. With so many involved coming from different angles, can they produce a dish worth eating?
Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, say there is no single solution to achieve more growth and jobs. He produces a cautious mini-budget.
Minister of Economic Development, Ebrahim Patel and Trade and Industry Minister, Rob Davies in their respective plans hope to create millions of jobs in the future.
Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel is responsible for long-term government strategy through the National Planning Commission. Nobody is sure what it means.
Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Gill Marcus' contribution is another interest rate cut.
COSATU, via Zwelinzima Vavi, endorse the government's new economic growth path framework released this week as it "accommodates" the trade federation.

101125tt 10 11 25 25 Nov 2010 The Times The metamorphosis of health care organisation NETCARE
Leading private hospital group Netcare participates in an illegal kidney transplant schema involving the buying human kidneys for cash. Donors come mainly from Brazil. Recipients are rich Israeli. Between 2001 and 2003, 109 transplant operations took place in a South African hospital. A doctor, four surgeons, two hospital employees and a translator were part of the syndicate. Netcare has pleaded guilty to its role in the organ transplant scheme and has paid a fine of over R4-million as well as R3.8-million to the Asset Forfeiture Unit. Due to scarcity of organs and shortage of legitimate donors, there has been a tendency to go to the black market. Poor people, who are in desperate need for money, "volunteer" to sacrifice their organs. Methods of persuasion used by these syndicates are highly questionable. Post operation treatment is often lacking. Donors go home soon afterwards with little assisted care in case of complications. It appears that greed and money drove Netcare into involvement. They should have known better.
Like with Kafka's Metamorphorsis, where a human changes into a monstrous insect, Zapiro's cartoon transforms the healthcare organisation NETCARE into a VULTURE.

Pope says condoms are okay for gays. In his latest book, Pope Benedict XVI is reported to have said the use of condoms is acceptable when they are able to reduce the risk of infection such as HIV/AIDS. In other words, Benedict said that for male prostitutes - for whom contraception is n't a central issue - condoms are not a moral solution. He also said that they could be justified "in the intention of reducing the risk of infection." These statements are certainly opening up the debate especially in Africa. Africa is home to an estimated 158 million Catholics and where a high percentage of the population suffers from HIV/AIDS. Zapiro's cartoon is a detailed caricature of Pope Benedict XVI wearing sunglasses. In his hand is a piece of paper stating "Slight shift in condom policy". Is this a change of mind since he declared that condoms increased the problem of HIV/AIDS, when he visited West Africa in 2009?
