Shocked by the announcement of positive drug tests (banned stimulant methylhexaneamine) by two Springbok rugby players, the team management worry that other players may be effected and have sent all dietary supplements for further inspection. Controversial coach Pieter De Villiers, who normally puts his foot in it, has been extremely guarded. Zapiro's cartoon shows the effects that steroids can play on the human body.

Burma (now called Myanmar) holds its first elections for 20 years. The junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) captures the majority of seats in a controversial and sham election. The repressive military regime releases Aung San Suu Kyi from years of living under house arrest. The pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, can be compared to South Africa's Nelson Mandela. She embodies a nation's hopes for liberation. Is she genuinely free ? Zapiro's cartoon shows this graphically with a cage within a cage.
