101123tt 10 11 23 23 Nov 2010 The Times Pope opens discussion on the taboo subject of condoms.

Pope says condoms are okay for gays. In his latest book, Pope Benedict XVI is reported to have said the use of condoms is acceptable when they are able to reduce the risk of infection such as HIV/AIDS. In other words, Benedict said that for male prostitutes - for whom contraception is n't a central issue - condoms are not a moral solution. He also said that they could be justified "in the intention of reducing the risk of infection." These statements are certainly opening up the debate especially in Africa. Africa is home to an estimated 158 million Catholics and where a high percentage of the population suffers from HIV/AIDS. Zapiro's cartoon is a detailed caricature of Pope Benedict XVI wearing sunglasses. In his hand is a piece of paper stating "Slight shift in condom policy". Is this a change of mind since he declared that condoms increased the problem of HIV/AIDS, when he visited West Africa in 2009?
