Until today, I hadn't written any fiction in weeks. I've been too tied up in editorial process (on 2 other projects, with a third looming) and doing promotional stuff — interviews, signings, business emails, and the like. As I said on Twitter, these days my job as a writer is about 50% writing, 50% All That Other Stuff. But lately it's been more like 10% writing, 90% All That Other Stuff.
Eh. The ratio should reverse — or at least stabilize, it is to be hoped — by the end of the month.

toe-mash and sweeter things
Monday's State-of-the-Toe: Party-toe don't stop the beat until the po-po shuts it down. Which is to say, it's still throbbing and now more purpley than before, but I crammed it into a pair of Keds in order to run a Walgreens errand all the same. Now I'm afraid to remove the shoe for fear of what I'll find. (Prediction: Bloody sock.)
But in better, less-toe-pulpy news, Boneshaker is a finalist for the 2010 Locus Award! Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who went over there and cast a vote — I'm...

I think I've broken my toe. I've definitely smashed and torn the nail, and the whole wee nubbin is a little crooked - and starting to swell. I posted a picture of the damage over on Twitter (don't click that if you're of the sensitive stomach type); but it's actually swollen more and turned darker since I snapped that shot.
The toe has been treated, bandaged, and taped to its neighbor. No, I'm not going to the ER, since all they'd do at the ER is treat it, bandage it, and tape it to its...

Panty Raid
Once upon a time I had a pair of lucky green panties. They were dark green, size small, purchased from Victoria's Secret while I was in college. They were my "lucky" green panties because for some reason, they just wouldn't die. I had those damn things for over ten years — during which time my weight fluctuated up and down by about 35 pounds. AND THEY STILL FIT. ALWAYS. These were magical panties. No two ways about it.
I liked Victoria's Secret underthings. They were well-made and...

Last night's event at the Garfield Book Company was really great — we had a good audience, good questions, and I even sold some books. Thanks tremendously to those of you who came out, and to the staff at the book store. I can't recommend them enough. Great store, great crew. Five stars. Two thumbs up.
As for today, it's been less stellar. I'm still fighting my way through a certain round of edits, though the end is kind of in sight. I'll have them wrapped up by the end of next week...

Reminder
Hey everyone - just a quick heads up to remind the Tacoma folks that I'll be out in your neck of the woods this evening. Catch me at the Garfield Book Company [208 Garfield Street,Suite 101; Tacoma, WA 98444:]. Tonight, April 15 at 7:00 p.m.
I may or may not read from Boneshaker because (a). I'm getting tired of reading the same sections all the time, and (b). the odds are fair that some of the folks who show up will have already read it.
I'm thinking instead of picking a section from this...

April 12, 2010 (redux)
To answer a few of the questions I've been lobbed via Twitter and email - it turned out that Amelie was suffering from hepatic lipidosis, complicated by an inoperable, fast-growing tumor at her gall bladder duct. There was nothing anyone could do for her, except what her owner did: Love her to bits and pieces, spoil her silly, and let her go.
By way of honoring Amelie's memory, Ellen plans to eventually donate a sum of money equal to what was donated to her (during the internet drive) to the ...

Amelie
2002-2010
After more than a month of frankly heroic efforts, her owner (my friend Ellen) made the difficult decision to let her go. Amelie died this morning, surrounded by people who loved her. She was a sweet, beautiful cat who loved sunbeams, her big brother Java, heating pads, and pork roast. May she rest in peace.

Still alive. Met the deadline. Two more deadlines await on the other side of it, but they aren't quite so urgent. Tomorrow I have stuff to do. Monday is going to be rough. But I've been offered (and am gratefully accepting) a little time-off from the day-job, so it is to be hoped that the next couple of weeks will give me some of the catching-up-time I so desperately need.
Here. Have some links.
