Internet and technology entrepreneur Jimmy Wales (@jimmy_wales) is founder of the online nonprofit encyclopedia Wikipedia and cofounder of the privately owned Wikia, Inc., including its entertainment media brand Fandom, powered by Wikia. Jimmy serves on the board of trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit charitable organization he established to operate Wikipedia.
In 2019, Jimmy launched WT Social—a news-focused social network. In 2006, Jimmy was named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world for his role in creating Wikipedia.
In 2021, inspired by his family quiz nights during COVID-19 lockdown, Jimmy created Quiz Night Beyond—a website where people can create and play quizzes online with family and friends wherever they may be.

I do my best with nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health and the immune system.
Right now, Athletic Greens is offering you their Vitamin D Liquid Formula free with your first subscription purchase—a vital nutrient for a strong immune system and strong bones. Visit AthleticGreens.com/Tim to claim this special offer today and receive the free Vitamin D Liquid Formula (and five free travel packs) with your first subscription purchase! “You wouldn’t know it from watching TV debates or going on Twitter, but most people are pretty reasonable and will say, ‘Look, I disagree with this, but it should be presented in a fair way that the defenders of it would identify.'” — Jimmy Wales
“I’m a pathological optimist, so I always think everything’s going to be great. That’s not correct, by the way; everything is not always going to be great. But that’s the way I feel and approach things.” — Jimmy Wales
“If you design for the worst people, then you’re failing design for good people.” — Jimmy Wales
“A great Wikipedian, in my view, is someone who really takes seriously the values and ideas of Wikipedia, like neutrality for example, quality for example, reliable sources. And they take all those things as more important than any particular, say, political opinion they might have.” — Jimmy Wales
“We’ve got a lot of problems on this planet. We need as many smart, educated people to figure them out as we possibly can.” — Jimmy Wales

[06:12]A light and refreshing alcoholic beverage I’ve been enjoying lately. [14:57]A recent bad decision I made. [18:12]As we get older, how have our workouts been focused? [20:43]What type of exercise, in particular, has made Kevin more durable during playtime with his kids? [34:40]Will I ever create my own NFTs or participate in the market surrounding them? [41:07]With so many NFTs being created these days, how do you separate the wheat from the chaff? [49:12]What is generative art? [49:39]There’s nothing quite like having your house struck by lightning in the middle of recording a podcast to remind you of the importance of emergency preparedness. [54:21]Back to NFTs: even Jay-Z has gotten in on the action by changing his Twitter icon to a CryptoPunk — a trailblazing class of NFTs that big-name auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s take seriously and sell for millions of dollars. How significant is this, really? [1:01:14]On riding the emotional roller coaster that is investment and trying to guess where the markets will be down the track. Regrets? I’ve had a few. [1:07:40]In the blockchain space, what is Kevin — as an investor — paying close attention to? [1:12:50]On the general worthlessness of meme coins, the transcendence of Dogecoin, and what makes one cryptocurrency more “real” over another. [1:14:06]Do public statements from heavy hitters like Elon Musk cause the value of various cryptocurrencies to artificially fluctuate, or are these fluctuations more significantly controlled by other market factors? [1:18:25]If Bitcoin is such a “dirty” currency that has environmentalists concerned, can we expect it to clean up its act? Or are alternatives like Ethereum and Chia better poised to bring us greener crypto? [1:20:08]The best way to learn how blockchain technologies work? Don’t sink your life savings into them, but get your hands dirty and play. [1:25:08]With so many blockchain projects active today, how do Kevin and his partners at True Ventures vet potential investments? What wild innovations are being pitched right now that might revolutionize the future of finance? [1:25:55]What is BlockFi, and what are its rewards and risks compared to traditional banking alternatives? Does Kevin see future governmental regulation putting a damper on the potential of this kind of platform, or will it bolster its use by the average consumer? [1:30:13]Only in the world of DeFi: how self-repaying loans work through the Alchemix protocol. [1:34:06]While Kevin welcomes sensible blockchain regulation in the US to clarify the intangibles for the average consumer, what are the potential pitfalls of crypto that worry him? [1:36:26]Dollar cost averaging and risk management to avoid the dreaded panic sell. [1:39:13]Why I don’t make an investment I can’t hold for at least three years. [1:40:52]Why, based on current information, I’m holding onto my Bitcoin and Ethereum for the foreseeable future. [1:42:17]When it might make sense for even a true believer to sell off their cryptocurrency and diversify assets. [1:44:09]Why even modest, but stable interest returned on an investment isn’t the worst thing in the world, and how to ensure you’re earning interest on the crypto you’re holding. [1:46:13]What I’ve been doing to facilitate better sleep in the past few weeks, and how I’ve been tracking it. [1:49:33]What constitutes a bad night of sleep for me? [1:54:00]How do I supplement my omega-3s, and what seem to be their unexpected benefits? [1:55:56]Why you should never oil your sauna. [2:00:53]The biggest game-changer for Kevin: a year of daily 55-minute Zen meditation sessions. [2:03:10]I reflect on my own deep experiences — including a psychotic breakdown — with Vipassana meditation, and how a sauna can put me in the right frame of mind to meditate effectively, feel physically and emotionally refreshed, and dramatically increase HRV. [2:03:42]In order to stay committed to his goal of a daily, 55-minute practice for the past year, how did Kevin’s approach to meditation differ from previous attempts? [2:07:43]What does one of Kevin’s meditation sessions look like, how does it feel, and in what way do koans — paradoxical anecdotes or riddles — fit into the equation? [2:11:41]What prompted Kevin’s commitment to Zen meditation, what has he learned so far, and how much does he have left to learn? [2:22:19]Why Kevin thinks I’d be an ideal candidate for Zen meditation, why I should invite his Zen teacher to the show, and how Zen and psychedelics might perceive reality through similar lenses. [06:20]After being born and raised in England, what was it like for Giuliana, at age 15, to accompany her mother’s return to Chile? Why was it not as smooth of a transition as she might have been expecting? [10:58]As an undergraduate student, how did Giuliana choose her path of study? [14:05]What is an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), and how does one measure its success? [17:08]How did Giuliana go from studying aquaculture to fungi? [18:20]Why does it seem that mushrooms and fungi have been so understudied? [22:26]What’s so unique about Chilean mycology that it became Giuliana’s life work? Has she discovered any new species of fungi? [23:57]How can we determine with certainty the age of a fungal species? [27:07]Are fungi gendered? [29:22]What does Amanita galactica look like, and how did Giuliana choose the name? [30:34]What’s the protocol when it is believed a new species has been discovered? How are specimens preserved in the field? [33:04]Much talk about mate and tango — two things I loved in Argentina many years ago. [39:55]Giuliana’s serendipitous discovery of a second species: Cortinarius chlorosplendidus. [46:30]Why is Kew Gardens so important to the field of mycology? [48:24]How a mushroom is like an apple — just a small part of a much larger organism. [49:22]Why do mycologists believe some mushrooms have developed properties that are hallucinogenic or even toxic to other species? [51:22]Giuliana is kind enough to give us a crash course in taxonomy 101. [55:38]How does a fungarium’s holotype differ from a voucher specimen? [57:43]How did Giuliana come to befriend the legendary Jane Goodall, and how has this friendship encouraged her as a fellow mother field scientist? [58:44]Under Giuliana’s leadership, Chile became the first country in the world to include the fungi kingdom in its environmental legislation. How did she accomplish this, and what does she hope this achieves on a globally ecosystemic level? [1:03:25]What are the implications of human beings being more closely related to fungus than fungus is to plants? For starters, consider penicillin. [1:10:06]In what ways are fungi crucial for life as we know it to exist? [1:12:22]What is the mission of the Fungi Foundation? [1:16:45]What books have influenced Giuliana’s approach to the wonderful world of fungi? [1:22:56]An ineludible responsibility towards the kingdom of the fungi: on finding simplicity in what, at first glance, seemed complex. [1:26:20]The importance of taking time for self-reflection when you’re facing problems for which you’re uniquely suited to solve — especially in a world that’s so hyperconnected and focused on what everyone else is doing and choosing to share. [1:29:56]What is the Telluride Mushroom Festival, what makes it such an incredible experience, and what will Giuliana be presenting there this year? This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens. I get asked all the time, “If you could only use one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is usually Athletic Greens, my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body in 2010 and did not get paid to do so.
That’s up to a one-year supply of Vitamin D as added value when you try their delicious and comprehensive all-in-one daily greens product.
This episode is brought to you by Pique Tea! I first learned about Pique through my friends Dr. Peter Attia and Kevin Rose, and now Pique’s fermented pu’er tea crystals have become my daily go-to. I often kickstart my mornings with their Pu’er Green Tea and Pu’er Black Tea, and I alternate between the two. Their crystals are cold-extracted, using only wild-harvested leaves from 250-year-old tea trees. Plus, they triple toxin screen for heavy metals, pesticides, and toxic mold—contaminants commonly found in tea. I also use the crystals for iced tea, which saves a ton of time and hassle.
Pique is offering 15% off of their pu’er teas, exclusively to my listeners. Simply visit PiqueTea.com/Tim, and the discount will be automatically applied. They also offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, so your purchase is completely risk free. Just go to PiqueTea.com/Tim to learn more.

[06:06]A recent purchase over which I agonized to a degree that seems ludicrous in hindsight. [08:38]How do you think about money? Probably not as closely as the guy Ramit knows who has $8 million in net worth but goes out of his way to save $8 on groceries because he hates “the idea of overpaying.” [09:56]Why did it take so long for Ramit to start a podcast, and in what ways can a listener expect his show to differ vastly from this one? [12:03]Ramit justifies his fascination for toying with trolls, and I share a pro tip for anyone who’s ever being interviewed by a journalist (or podcaster). [14:12]In the last 30 days, can you think of a specific situation where you were not on the same page financially with your partner? [16:08]What is your idea of a rich life? This is a question with wildly varied answers depending on who you ask, but one truth seems consistent: People’s feelings about how they are doing financially are highly uncorrelated with their actual financial status. [17:18]Why Americans’ tendency to compare themselves to their neighbors is completely irrational. [20:16]What does Ramit’s rich life look like? [22:16]Ramit’s money rules. [23:17]What the recent decision to have fresh flowers delivered to my house every week does for my rich life. [24:36]Why asking “What is your rich life?” can be such a magical, transformational question — especially when a partner is present. [25:40]If you’re a bit of an overspender, have you ever said “No” to your partner or family? [27:38]If you were not on the same page financially with your partner at some point in the last 30 days, on a scale of 1 to 10, how big of an issue is it? [28:32]A bucket list/rich life goals vision exercise Ramit did with his wife Cassandra, inspired by Stephen King’s 2003 National Book Club Speech. [30:06]How Ramit and Cassandra have agreed to financially contribute, together, to their eight-year anniversary goal, and how it feels to watch the fund make progress. [34:55]Ramit and Cassandra meet once a month to discuss finances. What does the format look like? [38:21]Ramit’s true, but most embarrassing backlog rich life goal. [41:13]How to make conversations about money positive experiences rather than negative and depressing. [43:50]The typical approach to talking about finances when one half of a couple is an overspender (and/or people pleaser who has trouble establishing boundaries), and what Ramit suggests as a better, more effective alternative. [44:40]What needs to happen for a couple to succeed in solving whatever financial problems they have (and avoid passing along toxic money behavior to their offspring). [49:26]Why it’s not enough just to want to change your relationship with money, and how psychology and tools can easily be used to affect the desired change — with far less effort than fighting with your spouse about money for the rest of your miserable lives. [52:12]An example of a time Ramit saw a 9/10 severity problem with a couple and their money solved simply. [54:38]Thoughts and positive listener feedback about prenups since our last conversation. [57:55]The $100 challenge. [1:00:12]What would result from Ramit’s own $100 (or $1,000 or $5,000) challenge? [1:04:02]What would the result of my own challenge look like? [1:07:17]Gauging the most important lessons that can be learned from the $100 (or more) challenge, and rejecting the coded-for-fear life of frugality that many of us accept as the default. [1:08:32]How Ramit turned a couple’s conversation around a $100+ honeymoon challenge from a downward spiral into an upward one. [1:11:39]Thoughts on how we can learn to spend our money in meaningful ways on enjoying and enhancing a rich life rather than endlessly stockpiling it for some unknown purpose in an unforeseeable future. [1:13:06]Fascinating patterns around the saving and spending of money that Ramit has noticed in his conversations with couples. [1:20:03]Recommendations for further developing the skill of financial comfort and reaffirming the importance of a relationship. [1:24:02]Exercising generosity as a way of becoming more like the people we want to be and reinforcing the positive potential of the money we make. Illustration via 99designs“To my mind, science, properly pursued, only deepens the mystery. It doesn’t take the mystery away. It shows you how mystery exists profoundly at every level.”
— Dennis McKenna
Dennis McKenna (@DennisMcKenna4) has spent more than 40 years researching the interdisciplinary study of Amazonian ethnopharmacology and plant hallucinogens. He has conducted extensive ethnobotanical fieldwork in the Peruvian, Colombian, and Brazilian Amazon.
His doctoral research at the University of British Columbia focused on the ethnopharmacology of ayahuasca and oo-koo-he, two tryptamine-based hallucinogens used by indigenous peoples in the Northwest Amazon.
He is a founding board member of the Heffter Research Institute, and was a key organizer and participant in the Hoasca Project, the first biomedical investigation of ayahuasca used by the UDV, a Brazilian religious group. He is the younger brother of Terence McKenna.
From 2000 to 2017, he taught courses on ethnopharmacology as well as plants in human affairs in the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota. In 2019, in collaboration with colleagues, he incorporated a new non-profit, the McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy. He emigrated to Canada in the spring of 2019 together with his wife Sheila, and now resides in Abbotsford, B.C.

Feynman | AmazonThe Blind Men and the Elephant | Peace CorpsSHOW NOTESDennis describes his first meeting with legendary ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes, the ensuing correspondence, and how it began a journey he wasn’t quite expecting. [06:53]After spending 15 years in the sweltering Amazon, can Richard Evans Schultes be blamed for the disarming state in which Dennis first encountered him at Harvard? [20:15]What made Sanford Siegel such a unique, creative scientist, and why is science such a crucial framework for serious explorers of the psychedelic ecosystem? [22:51]What is Dennis’ “tortured” definition of ethnopharmacology? How many of the medicinal compounds we take for granted today have a cultural back story? [27:52]On the government-subsidized 1967 Ethnopharmacologic Search for Psychoactive Drugs gathering, its 50th anniversary (and corresponding volumes edited by Dennis), the intervening Controlled Substances Act, and recent, surprising findings related to ayahuasca. [30:58]What is the UDV? [37:19]Does the UDV differentiate between different types of brews for different purposes? What is the organization’s view of ayahuasca as a medicine, and why have its adherents allowed outsiders to investigate its mysteries with scientific curiosity? [39:47]There’s not just one type of ayahuasca. What has been Dennis’ experience with some of its other varieties, and what practical purposes might be served by learning more about them? Why has further study been elusive thus far? [44:01]What is Brugmansia, and what makes it so scary? How is it used, and what should you do if you discover that some has ended up in your ayahuasca? [48:09]Reasons to be cautious with sight-unseen mercenary “shamans” offering to guide you on psychedelic journeys in strange lands from which you might not return. [51:17]The pros and cons of how ayahuasca tourism has altered its traditional use in recent years. [54:24]If ayahuasca is something that can change your life after just one use, how does Dennis justify taking it over 500 times in his life, and what has it taught him? [58:14]What circumstances might dictate Dennis’ decision to partake of ayahuasca, and why does he believe microdosing ayahuasca might actually be of benefit — even if he’s skeptical of the efficacy of microdosing other compounds? [1:02:54]That time when things went terribly askew: the experiment at La Chorrera (as chronicled in Terence McKenna’s True Hallucinations), and why anyone undertaking such an exploration needs to be prepared for this possibility. [1:08:13]Was it just an unusually bountiful and constantly consumed supply of psilocybin mushrooms over a long period of time to blame for sending the experiment at La Chorrera off the rails? [1:14:24]When is it appropriate to let things play out — as they eventually did for Dennis at La Chorrera — or commit someone having this kind of experience to a professional psychiatric intervention? [1:17:16]What is The McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy, why was this nonprofit started, and what projects is it currently facilitating? [1:24:22]Is The McKenna Academy a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization? [1:29:36]Who else is involved in The McKenna Academy? [1:30:03]What projects would be on Dennis’ shortlist with the proper resources, and what’s on the plate? [1:31:09]New thoughts on the Stoned Ape Theory as Terence McKenna’s Food of the Gods is about to be reprinted. [1:32:38]How much financial support will The McKenna Academy need to accomplish its current roster of goals, and what’s its highest priority? [1:36:15]What is a voucher specimen? [1:38:50]How many plant species are estimated to exist in the Amazon today, and how many have been thoroughly investigated? What are we doing to increase this percentage, what might we hope for from forthcoming discoveries, and what can we do to safeguard the bounty from these discoveries for the people who have been their stewards for millennia? [1:41:33]How quickly can our tax-deductible donations fill The McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy’s coffers to $600,000? Let’s find out together! I’ll start. In her beloved and bestselling books, like Operating Instructions (an account of her son’s first year), Bird by Bird (her classic book on writing), and Help, Thanks, Wow (a celebration of prayer), Lamott delves into what makes us human.
