Announcing my new “A Proper Picture for my ‘Pickman’s Model’ Kickstarter!

Sign up here. Basically, this is a very quick-and-dirty art Kickstarter, starting May 12th. The short version is: I’ve revised and expanded my short story ‘Pickman’s Model’ (yes, I have no shame*) and I plan to publish it on Kindle, and so forth. But for that I need art. I’ve called in Ben Fleuter to make a proper picture for it, but he rather reasonably wishes to get paid.

The Kickstarter itself is going to be fairly low – but if we hit the target, the stretch goals will let me buy more art ahead of time, for the next one or two chapbooks I’m working on now. People who back at the $5 level will get a digital copy of ‘Pickman’s Model,’ complete with the art; people who back at the $10 level will get the story, and digital copies of any chapbooks (plus the art, of course) unlocked by the stretch goals. This is absolutely a digital-only Kickstarter, though. Printing physical books gets expensive, very very quickly.

Here’s the link. Hope you’ll sign up to be notified on launch!

*Technically it’s my first professional fiction sale, only I never got paid. Long story.

SpaceX launches Starship, lands Starship, Starship survives.

SN15th time’s the charm:

Via @IMAO_. I’ve always felt Elon Musk’s operating philosophy draws much from the below. Note, by the way, that I say that respectfully. The philosophy below works:

Happy Cinco de Drinko!

Which I understand is one of the good-naturedly exasperated nicknames that Mexican-Americans often have for Cinco de Mayo. I don’t normally quote Urban Dictionary, but this seems spot-on:

I can sympathize, since my own ethnic minority went through this decades ago. It’s just how groups assimilate in this country: your holiday gets appropriated, and then people start getting [expletive deleted]faced celebrating it. I recommend just leaning into it, because you won’t have a choice anyway…

Tweet of the Day, That Is, Indeed, Not How It Works edition.

Not that I do that particular hobby. But I’ve done other hobbies. And it’s NEVER how it works.

05/05/21 Snippet, Rescue From Chateau d’Aléatoire.

I dunno why I originally told this, instead of showing it. Maybe I was in a hurry?

His thoughts were interrupted by a smirking “Sir Gerard!” Gerard looked up, to see… Lord Phillipe, he thought with an extremely well-hidden contempt. I’m surprised he’s voluntarily entered a building that’s had commoners in it.

Aloud, Gerard said, “Good evening, my lord! Would you care to sit with me?” He would not normally have offered, but the thought of the little toady having his clothes scraped clean afterward amused. “I can recommend the local white; the innkeeper opened a new tun just this morning.”

It was amusing, how Lord Phillipe had to fight to keep all the sneers off his face. It was clearly something he was not used to. “I beg your pardon, Sir Gerard,” he said, “but I am on the Duke’s business, and only wished to offer you a good evening in passing.”

From a regular musketeer that would be a commonplace hail-and-farewell; from a man who kept a pomade at hand, lest he encounter the smell of a soldier, it was alarmingly novel. As was the ‘Sir Gerard.’ Since when does he think I am worth wasting courtesy on?

They are remaking… The Toxic Avenger.

I’m not even mad.

Coming off from the critical success of Ma Rainey’s Black BottomDeadline brings rising actress Taylour Paige has been tapped to star as the female lead opposite Peter Dinklage in Legendary’s upcoming Toxic Avenger reboot. This new casting addition comes after nearly a month since Jacob Tremblay (RoomGood Boys) was confirmed as the first actor to join Dinklage in the project.

…I guess I just want to know why. What more needs to be said in that franchise? I’m legit curious about that, honestly – and no hate towards the original, either. But what’s the victory condition here?

05/04/21 Snippet, Rescue From Chateau d’Aléatoire.

What do I know about 16-18th Century AD France (which this is sort of based on)? Nothing! Do I care? No! Although I will need to change the names of the regions.

Like any sensible soldier, when Gerard had a problem he went to a tavern. Maybe the solution would be at the bottom of a wine bottle. Or perhaps the problem itself would get drowned in one, instead, thus stop pestering a honest soldier. And if all else failed, there was always the chance for a brawl. That rarely solved problems, but it usually made Gerard feel better about them.

The Culotte Jetée had managed to avoid much Gaillic attention during the brief fighting, and the innkeeper had the sickly smile of a man ready to toady to keep it that way. Gerard tried not to hold it against the man. Too much. Not every ‘fellow-soldier’ was so tolerant, but since this was where the officers drank, things stayed quiet, and no more than the usual cups got broken every night. Gerard still ordered a fresh, sealed bottle of wine, and never mind the expense. Gaillish wines already tasted enough like piss that he was not sure he could tell if the innkeeper was fortifying them on the sly.

Alas, no solutions to Gerard’s problems had deigned to show up at the Culotte Jetée by the end of the first bottle. No obliging bravos, either. But then, the local western Gaillish wouldn’t dare throw a punch at an eastern Gaillic soldier, would they? Not when their former lord was locked up in his own dungeons at the Chateau d’Aléatoire, waiting to be given the sword in the morning.

Cover update for MORGAN BAROD.

I’m very pleased, so far.

In other news: I still have to actually chew through the beta reader feedback, because reasons. I’m going to start doing that in the next day or two. Then it’s off to the editor, and the mechanism starts up. What fun!
