Back in the saddle again.

After a moment of silence, Tobias sighed. “I’m afraid you’re going to start from the beginning on this one, Mrs. Miller.”

“And if I don’t want to?”

Tobias shrugged. “Do I need to insult your intelligence by spelling it out?”

That at least redirected the scowl in his direction. “No, Commander, you don’t. You’re in charge, you don’t have a boss anymore, and you could throw me out an airlock for any reason. Or no reason at all. Tell me: what’s that kind of power like?”

“Highly annoying,” Tobias replied promptly. “It gets in the way of me doing my job. Which right now includes figuring out who killed Shirley Oates.”

“Well,” Miller snapped out, “It wasn’t me.”

“Fine. It wasn’t you. Who do you want to blame for it?” Tobias chuckled at her look of surprise. “You knew her, I didn’t. Even if you lie to me, I’ll still know more after talking to you than when I started.”

I find the TRUST NO ONE Netflix trailer curiously intriguing.

Mostly because I think that the stakes are incredibly personally low.

Did a cryptocurrency CEO fake his own death to steal $250 million?

I mean, what’s it to me if he did? Aside from the hit to Western society whenever anybody allegedly embezzles money at this level, of course. On the other hand, Western culture is improved by tales of a really good, and somewhat deranged, scam at this level, too. If TRUST NO ONE: THE HUNT FOR THE CRYPTO KING is a good enough documentary, does that offset the heinousness of the original crime? I am undecided on the answer.

PS: Yeah, the dude’s probably dead for-real, if only because of Occam’s Razor (and the fact that successful scams of that magnitude never work out right). So stipulated. I still have no particular skin in this game, which is allowing me a certain detachment about the story.

Day called on account of day.

Personal stuff that is not actually relevant to anything except that I am now watching the second episode of MOON KNIGHT and trying to untangle. It’s a remarkably good show so far. If this keeps up, it’s going to be the best Marvel series they’ve done. Yes, possibly even better than LOKI.

So lemme go back to that.

Today was Unsexy Publishing Stuff Day!

Mostly spent getting my barony’s newsletter in final shape, emailing people about stuff involving the book, and general fiddling with stuff. But at least everything I had to do today, got done. That’s not nothing.

Hopefully the coming days will be more conventionally creative, though.

Snippet: MOUTH.

Dunno if this is going anywhere: I had the thought this evening, and wanted to get the beginning down before I forgot it.

The supermarket isn’t safe anymore. They’re starting to show up there, too. I saw a monster there for the first time today. I mean, like, up close and personal. Almost scared the piss right out of me, too.

This one was a female, about forty (monsters age about the same as we do), and regular clothes could fit her. She might have even been good-looking, if it wasn’t for the horrible, twitching gash right across the lower half of her face.

Yeah, I know. Except for that. She was peering at vegetables, just like a human being would, and that was good. It gave me enough time to get hold of myself before she noticed me. I didn’t dare attract attention. Not here, not now. And it was my own damn fault for not being prepared, too.

Sure, I’ll admit that. No excuses. It was just that the supermarket had been a refuge before, you know? Even after things started changing, you could still go there and pretend everything was normal. So I had let my guard down, gotten sloppy, and now I had only a moment to try to pull it all together.

The GHOST RIDER 1 AND 2 Honest Trailers.

Damn, now I actually want to see GHOST RIDER. Honest Trailers legitimately sold me on the idea. I’m as surprised as you are, frankly.

Tweet of the Day, Why, Then, This Is Hell, And IGN Is Not Out Of It edition.

I used to think that political writing didn’t pay, until I saw the rates for non-political writing. Sweet merciful Christ:

IGN is looking for new freelancers to assist with the daily flow of stories in games, entertainment, tech, and science. $20 base rate per story. Sliding scale for heavier reporting. DM with an introduction and portfolio for details! pic.twitter.com/XXk0cZK5FT

PS: I recognize that IGN probably doesn’t have the budget to pay more. That does not absolve them of trying to get desperate people to write for them for essentially free.

Got sucked into making a map because it was the only way to explain something to somebody on Facebook.

Reintroducing my Kindle Vella story: THE STARS ARE WRONG.

I don’t want to just abandon THE STARS ARE WRONG: it’s a fun Cthulhu Mythos story where I was trying to switch things up a little. I don’t think it deserves to just end up as an academic footnote somewhere. So I’m putting up the link again, in the hopes it’ll get more play this time. Or, you know, any play at all.
