I forget why the television was on. I think George was looking for sports, because he missed watching them. But he didn’t find sports. He found the news, and the news was bad.

Oh, on the surface everything was fine. Everybody was still talking about the Plague, and how important it was to keep apart and follow the rules. But you could tell they didn’t mean it. The way they talked about the Unmasked was reckless! Those selfish bastards were one cough away from killing us, and they couldn’t even put on a mask? People used to understand how important this was.

…Well, maybe people were getting tired. The Plague had been going on longer than anybody had expected. And maybe it was because of the mouthies. They had spread further and further through the ranks of celebrities — but that night we saw a few of them among the politicians. And not from just one party! You’d think, but apparently mouthy infection was a bipartisan affair.

George and I must have watched the news channel for hours, the repetition only driving the horror home to us. They were talking about relaxing Plague restrictions. In churches, in bars, in public spaces… there were even plans to reopen the schools. Oh, thank God that I don’t have children!

This doesn’t actually look too bad. NIGHT SKY‘s giving me a little bit of the old late Seventies / early Eighties paranoid government conspiracy vibe; which is a positive thing, in this context. I watched a whole lot of those flicks, back when I was using DAMNATION DECADE to inform what movies to watch. Solid cast, too. Always nice to see an older actress get a good role.

Movie of the Friday Night: SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO (Live-action).

And the movie is not wasting too much time on explaining characters, backstory, or other fripperies. SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO takes the position that if you are watching this movie, you know precisely who all of these people are, what they mean to each other, and what the Hell was going on. And they are, in point of fact, correct. It took me no more than three minutes to get back in the zone.

I can’t watch it all in one go tonight, because I got stuff to do. But I’m already one-third done and I just turned it on to make sure everything was working properly.

I remember the first time I saw a mouthy. Thank God he was on television, or I would have completely lost it. The first time Billie saw one, it was in-person, and she almost got herself arrested over it.

“It wanted me in jail,” Billie told me as we walked along the park trail. She never liked it when any of us called a mouthy ‘him’ or ‘her.’ They were monsters to her, and that was the end of it. “I could tell. It kept egging the cop on, trying to get me in even more trouble. And the cop just stood there! He should have arrested it. It wasn’t even masked.”

“Really? How did it get away with that?” One of the things we realized pretty quickly was: most people don’t really see mouthies. Like, the physical deformities. Even we’re not always sure of one, if it’s wearing a mask as a disguise. It wasn’t until I ran into Billie, George, and the others that I stopped worrying that I had just gone crazy. If I was nuts, so were they — and in exactly the same way.

“We were outside, and it was after the lockdown was over.” Billie shook her head, like the memory pained her. “Even then you couldn’t trust the cops to always do the right thing, especially since I might have taken a swing or two at the mouthy.” She pounded one hand against her leg. “Inhuman bastard didn’t even try to fight. It just backed away until the cop came up running.”

I wanna hear the story of this deepfaked Andrew Garfield deepfake.

Because by now surely the story of this emergency plugging of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME leak can be told.

And all those people in YT comments claiming three months that they never bought it? Nah, people bought it. Which was almost certainly the goal. Although I don’t think the guy who made it got paid for it – and he should’ve; he did Marvel a solid. There Ain’t No Justice…
