The disappointing THE ESSEX SERPENT Apple TV+ trailer.

It’s disappointing because there’s no Essex Serpent in the trailer. Instead, it seems to be mostly about whether Claire Danes would rather sleep with Tom Hiddleston, or Hayley Squires. …Look, I’m not begrudging Apple TV+ subscribers their period psychodramas. I just wish they’d be more upfront about whether or not any actual cryptozoology is involved.

Shocking news about THE BATMAN sequel!

They’re making one! “During Warner Bros. Big CinemaCon presentation, it was announced that The Batman would be getting a sequel and that director Matt Reeves and actor Robert Pattinson would be returning to bring this sequel to fans.” I know, I know: who would ever have thought that a movie that’s grossed $760 million worldwide (and it would have been more, except that THE BATMAN’s streaming now) might get a sequel greenlit?

…Well, yes, everybody. But apparently you have to confirm this stuff nowadays. Personally, I blame Netflix, and its weird renewal algorithm. Lots of shows that you’d think would get renewed, don’t.

Snippet the Last, MOUTHY.

5200 words, which is fine, because it doesn’t need more. Tomorrow I edit, maybe tighten it up a bit. I didn’t entirely want to write it, but you know how that sort of thing goes.

I had high hopes for… Betty, I think her name was. She was as good at keeping track of dangers as I was; maybe even better. To look at her, you’d think the Plague never got within twenty feet. Even outside she had this mask arrangement that let her breathe without fogging up her glasses (I don’t wear any, thank God, so I never had to worry about that). “It took me forever to figure it out,” she admitted during one of our talks. “It’s still not perfect.”

“It’s never perfect,” I admitted. “But what choice do we have? Especially now that people are starting to get stupid about everything.”

That got her started, which was the idea. I was by now starting to think that she could be a prospect for this thing of ours, but I had to be sure that Betty wasn’t infected. Either by the Plague, or… the first stages of mouthy infection. Either would be a real shame.

The MOONFALL Honest Trailer.

The MOONFALL Honest Trailer had me in slight tears from laughing. Silently, because my youngest is still doing virtual school. But my God but this was brutally funny. And I liked MOONFALL! …For what it was*.

*I give it props for all the old-school 1970s space alien conspiracy stuff, too. You don’t see it represented enough, these days.

Today was Real Weird, Folks – so pre-order my book TINSEL RAIN.

Absolutely, totally, flat-out weird. Twitter. The single most inept Russian false-flag operation I have ever seen. Multiple NFTs from a virtual ape yacht club getting stolen. Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!

So pre-order TINSEL RAIN. Signed copies! What a bargain.

SALEM’S LOT gets a September 2022 release date.

Though not a trailer yet, weirdly: “Warner Bros. has announced that its upcoming feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot will be released on September 9, 2022.” I first heard about this flick back in 2019; there hasn’t been much news since, though. I kind of forgot about it, unsurprisingly.

Will it be any good? I hope so: the original book is a solid vampire novel, from King’s pre-reeducation days*. There’s enough there to build a decent movie around it. Hope it doesn’t suck!

*I do not refer to his opinions on the Things We Don’t Talk About Here. I refer to his current apparent desire to be loved by the very literature professors who loathed him as much as he loathed them. Frankly, his books were better when he despised those people.

04/25/2022 Snippet, MOUTHY.

Last part of the story: but I have to go back now and add a couple of bits. Then see if it coheres. Hopefully, it will.

Entering the lab made the detective’s skin prickle for a moment, and at first he wasn’t sure why. It looked the same (there was a corpse on a gurney, probably waiting for him to take a look at it), but it didn’t quite smell the same. There was the usual combination of disinfectant and death, and he had been expecting that; but there was something else, too. After a moment, he realized it was fear; and it was coming off the coroner’s assistant. She was standing in one corner, rigidly waiting, and not meeting anybody’s eyes.

The agent nodded at the assistant. “Everybody else is out for the day,” she said. “Involuntarily. She’s the only one on the staff who could handle what you’re about to see for more than five minutes.”

“Ah. Maybe I don’t want to see it, then,” replied the detective. “Whatever it is.”

“Sorry, Detective.” The agent didn’t sound very sorry as she picked up a clipboard. “If we’re stuck with this, then so are you.”

Musk buys Twitter.

I am not exactly of two minds on this; it’s more like I had two mildly divergent impulses in my response. First one:

I for one welcome our new neo-Heinleinite rocket-ship digital landlord.
