ROGUE ONE doing a limited IMAX release.

That might be worth it. I went to see ROGUE ONE when it came out, and the battle scenes were awesome on the big screen, but I had no real desire to see it again that way. Seeing it on IMAX, though? …Maybe.

Not really all that interested in ANDOR, though. I wanna see the reviews first. It may not thrill my soul.

08/15/22 Snippet, TOUR OF DUTY.

Power came on today, which was exciting. Well, it was exciting for the five seconds that the power was actually on. And it was really exciting for Senior Technician Aldini, because he ended up embedded in a wall. He didn’t die, thanks to his suit and the wall, but when we got him back to the pinnace it turned out both his legs were broken.

Aldini didn’t freak out about that, though. No, Aldini freaked out when Fifth Officer Chin (our fearless leader, at least on this pinnace) wouldn’t let him go back to the Blobmart. He started screaming about how you don’t need legs in free fall, Chin ordered him to take a sedative, and the next thing you know, four of us were trying to grab him and hold him steady long enough for Aldini to get the sedative anyway. That was a fun five minutes, and when Chin finally gave him the injection she went with a double dose. Kind of risky, but I for one am going to have a black eye from all the flail about he did. He didn’t die, so why worry about it?

Chin looked around afterward, and I’m pretty sure she locked eyes with each of the first-timers. She damn well locked eyes with me. “That was not someone going space-happy,” she told all of us. “You can tell by how Senior Technician Aldini did not try to chew off your fingers, or rip out your eyes. He is suffering from Temporary Mental Decohesion, and will be at full effectiveness once we return to the ship.

“TMD is a common problem in space travel, which can affect anyone. None of you are immune. It occurs when it occurs, and is difficult to defend against. Suffering from it is not a sign of moral weakness. I expect none of you will treat the Senior Technician differently, simply because he has been infected with a mental disease. Do I make myself clear?”

“She certainly made something clear,” Emily said later, as we sat around vainly trying to enjoy our coffee-substitutes. “Mental trauma is more common out here than we were told.”

The ‘Yikes’ WIFELIKE trailer.

Well, Wifelike looks as sketchy as Hell:

Exclusive #Wifelike Clip & Digital Code Giveaway

RT to enter. The film stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Elena Kampouris.https://t.co/evbVBaS1eQ pic.twitter.com/Pbcv9Grf8x

More from Coming Soon: “A grieving detective in the near-future hunts down criminals who trade artificial humans on the black market,” reads the film’s synopsis. “In the fight to end AI exploitation, an underground resistance attempts to infiltrate him by sabotaging the programming of the artificial human assigned as his companion to behave like his late wife. She begins to question her reality as memories of a past life begin to surface in a world where nothing is as it seems.”

I’m not saying it can’t be a good movie, mind you. Just that the premise is off-putting. You make something sapient, you better have the citizenship papers signed and notarized when it opens its eyes for the first time. I mean, crap, we fought a war over the issue – and my side won. If this guy is the protagonist, he better get his head right, right away…

08/15/22 Snippet, THE THING IN THE AIRLOCK.

Like a damn logjam breaking.

“Maintenance found the suit in a reclamation hopper,” Abbie told him as they half-slid down the ‘emergency’ ladders. “And before you ask: there’s no camera footage. Garbage disposal wasn’t considered an essential security zone.”

“Right, I remember,” Tobias said, trying not to sound sour about it. “Because the internal sensors were still set to let us know if any contraband was being disposed of. Or just something big and expensive, like a working suit.”

The two of them walked into the Reclamation Services station, which was possibly even more spotless than it was before the end of the world (Heinlein Station needed every complex molecule it could get). It felt vaguely rude to walk on the utterly clean floor. And it was empty: the suit was the only thing in it besides the table it was on, and the table was only there because it couldn’t be easily removed from the side of the disposal hopper.

I’m starting to see the flaw in that decision,” Tobias continued. “We have a suit! Hurray! …Now what?”

Goodness me, where did the day go?

It’s like the clock for the entire household here was set ahead two hours. No way is it 1 PM! …Well, I guess it could be. Okay, fine, it obviously is. Still, we all apparently decided to sleep in, including the cat.

(There was another post here, but then I remembered [before publishing] that I’m retired.)

JEEZ, but getting this bit of connective working was a royal pain. But I can start stitching it together now. Huzzah!

Domaine didn’t initiate contact often, which was one reason why Tobias took the call during dinner. The other reason was… dinner. You could still grow potatoes, but the only seasoning left was salt. Tobias had read once that you could survive for good while on a diet of potatoes and skim milk. He just wasn’t sure why anybody would want to.

“What’s up, Domaine? It’s dinnertime.”

“Oh, I’m so terribly sorry, sir! But I’ve discovered something. I thought you should hear about it right away, sir.”

Tobias quirked an eyebrow at that: Domaine usually wasn’t so… solicitous? He must have been worried about the investigation not going anywhere. “All right, Domaine: let’s hear it.”

“I found video evidence of Catherine Miller near the room where Corporeal Oates’ remains were found. And she was pushing a cart at the time. One big enough for a body.”

That was enough to make Tobias completely forget his dinner. “Wait, what? Video evidence? The surveillance camera network is down.”

“They are, sir. But there are other networks.” Now Domaine was sounding smug. “I remembered that the pest control system used motion-activated cameras. The individual cameras stored any footage until their memory filled up, and then download it to a central database. Only…”

“Only we shut down pest control when it turned that all you needed to keep the rat population down was enough people desperate for animal protein,” Tobias finished for him.

The SCP: Fragmented Minds Video Game Kickstarter.

I got clued in about the SCP: Fragmented Minds Kickstarter by Constant Reader Luke. My eldest was hesitant at first, but he was nodding along at the artwork and videos soon enough. So I assume it looks good?
