Hrm. KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE will have a limited big-screen run.
Tempting. Well, let me specific: the subtitled version is tempting. The dubbed version is setting my teeth on edge, and putting me into full Snooty Geek Mode.
I’ve always been a fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s work. Also, when I’ve watched this movie before I’ve always been struck on how it feels like an alternate timeline where World War I simply didn’t… happen. I’m giving serious thought to seeing this properly. Which, again, means subtitled. Because I’m a horrible snob that way, sorry.

07/21/22 Snippet, 2084.
I figured out what was wrong with the story! It’s actually a set of stories, and I needed to go back, cut off a huge hunk of the beginning, and turn it into a story of its very own.

There was still a London Underground. They hadn’t even changed the stops: the Invaders hadn’t dared. Humans had soon learned that the aliens were terrified of fiddling with any kind of engineering that was beyond their capacity to fix, which was most engineering. It was simply easier for the Invaders to put their administrative centers where the old ones had been, even if it did put strains on their security apparatus. That was what the Brotherhood Bureau was for.
But since the Invaders had also grabbed every engineer they could find, kidnap, corrupt, or coerce for their own needs, the Underground was noticeably worse in the places that hadn’t been regularly used by either the aliens, or their gallowglass lackeys. This carriage in particular had been stripped of all of its original features at one point, including the windows. The new government had been hard-pressed to put in even cheap new seats and handholds, and half of the windows were only wooden slats.
Everything was spotlessly clean, though. The Windsor dynasty had views on defacement of public property. And a lot of rubble that still needed clearing up.
The National Treasure: Edge of History Disney+ teaser trailer.
I am… willing to see how this goes.
National Treasure: Edge of History is a series, not a movie; and, astonishingly, these days Nick Cage might actually be able to demand more money for a series than The Mouse is ready to pay for Disney+ filler. And they got Harvey Keitel, which is decent of them. TV series are always going to end up being different than the movies that birthed them.
They also tend to suck, but that was already baked into the cake. I’m not gonna bet anything I would mind losing on this show being an exception to that rule of thumb. But I can at least watch the first episode.
The DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS [And OWLBEARS]: HONOR AMONG THIEVES trailer.
OPENING NIGHT. OPENING GORAM NIGHT.
Heck, my wife watched the DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES trailer, and indicated that she’s going with me to see this. Of course, D&D was her first TTRPG love, both as a player and a DM. Plus, there’s an owlbear. I don’t know why the owlbear is so important, but it is and now I MUST SEE THIS MOVIE.

So I played hooky today.
My wife came upstairs and asked me if I wanted to go to the Guinness brewery and see her sister and her new SO and drink beers and I said YES. So we went and I drank a couple of beers and one of them was ridiculously better than its description would have suggested and I regret NOTHING. This is why I became an ADULT. That is: to do things, and then capitalize the last words of my SENTENCES.

‘Woo Hoo.’
07/20/2022 Snippet, 2084.
Trying to get this done.

“Something the Invaders never cared about,” Jim pointed out. “They ran the factories until the last cargo shuttle either escaped or was destroyed, remember? Then tried to orbital-bombard them themselves.”
“Along with the rest of the British Isles. But they couldn’t have made very many of them.” Alex smiled, or at least her lips curled and her teeth were visible. “We kept track of every gallowglass that went over to the Invaders’ side. We still have the lists. We still peruse the lists. Most of them are accounted for, one way or another.”
“You wouldn’t need more than a few gallowglasses for a redoubt, though. Just enough to keep the ventilation and power working, and to train the next generation. Assuming nobody found you, people could hide out for years.” Jim frowned. “Although what would be the point? The Invaders aren’t coming back. The Alphabet Fleet saw them off when they were just a bunch of submarines and aircraft carriers retrofitted with ultradrives. Now that actual warships are patrolling the Solar System, the Invaders wouldn’t stand a chance.”
“Really? It seems obvious to me, Sir James. They wanted a guerilla force in place, to sabotage and harass whoever was left on earth after the Invasion failed. We’re going to be coming for them, after all. HMS Victory has finished her orbital trials, and she’ll be the first of many. The more the stay-behinds can hurt the Realm, the longer it’ll be before we can, ah, show our displeasure about the Invasion.”
She gave him a look. “Yes, I’m sure that the parallels between them and our own Merry Men partisans are noticeable to an outsider. The difference is, the gallowglasses are evil, and we’re not.”
Tweet of the Day, Zack Snyder Is Inevitable edition.
I agree with Sonny: this ain’t gonna happen. But still. The howling would reach the heavens…
The absolute funniest thing that could happen is for WB to announce MAN OF STEEL 2 with Zack Snyder and for us to learn that the Rolling Stone piece was planted by ousted execs bitter Snyder had owned them so thoroughly that he was coming back. That would be hilarious. https://t.co/8l7aTmF15m

Who here wants an Atari 2600… made out of Legos?
No, really: “Following relatively hot on the heels of 2020’s Lego NES, the Danish building block company has collaborated with another gaming titan for a similarly nostalgic console build just in time for its 50th anniversary. The Atari 2600 will soon be available in Lego form for anyone willing to shell out $239.99 and build it from its 2,532 pieces. The console and its buildable accessories will be available exclusively on the Lego store on August 1. However, there will be no pre-orders.”
Unfortunately, you can’t actually play Atari games on it, which I personally find exceptionally disappointing. I mean, it’s 2022. These games are available online. How hard would have been to add a chip and USB port?
