08/17/22 Snippet, THE THING IN THE AIRLOCK.

I regret nothing.

In stories, the hero can enjoy a constant stream of revelations and clues. In real life, Tobias spent the next two hours first having Domaine look for reports of anything else missing (Choudry’s surface suit was in fact absent from its locker). After that, he went back to his real job, which was coordinating the desperate escape of humanity from an increasingly hostile Moon.

The current plan had an acceptably percentage that could be saved, but too low a chance that they would be saved. The alternative barely got five percentage off the moon safely: and Tobias couldn’t even complain about either scenario, because they were both better than the ones he had been given last month. The almost-giggling, almost-sociopathic statistician now modeling the escape scenarios was certainly giving it his all.

Tobias had just caught up on his review when Ward called him. “Commander, Tam Stuart’s dead. Murdered.”

“Of course he was,” Tobias muttered, then cursed himself. “Sorry. Long day, dealing with Pickman’s models. I’ll be right there.”

Probably I could have just gotten the report, and stayed here, he thought to himself. And then stare at the survival numbers until my nose bleeds. Taking the report in person sounded like the better call.

The lights on the Blobmart came back on, about an hour into my shift. We didn’t get gravity or atmosphere back, but at least we can turn off all the spotlights. Vacuum or not, Amalgamation lighting tech is better than ours, surprise surprise.

I don’t like the new lights, though. They’re dimmer and more yellow than human-standard, which suggests some stuff about the planet the aliens were from. I’m finding that interesting, when I’m not thinking about how weirdly the light shifts, and how every so often there’s a shadow that really shouldn’t be in that particular location. Supposedly you get over constantly being surrounded by incomprehensible alien physics; something about the human mind’s basic inability to correlate all its contents. I’m not sure. I didn’t take any psychology classes in college.

Just having power was weird, though. When I called, Emily explained that the new senior tech was taking it slow. “Since the ship systems could not handle us turning on everything at once,” she said, “Technician Weathers decided to start with the most critical system first, and see what happened. Power gives us lights, and hopefully access to whatever part of the computer network the aliens allowed probationary species like ourselves to access.”

And it’s back in print! Truly, I do not know what I would do without my copy. It has been a joy to me…

The WEDNESDAY Netflix teaser trailer.

It’s… bloodier than I expected.

And I’m not really sold on the casting for Morticia and Gomez. I’m assuming they’re not getting much screen time, though (I originally wrote that out as ‘scream time,’ which is pretty funny!). I wonder if Tim Burton decided to make a horror show? – Because no version of the Addams Family (besides the original comics) has ever really been horror. It’s always been spooky comedy. Maybe Tim Burton’s decided to change that…

First look at GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S CABINET OF CURIOUSITIES.

I am looking forward to GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S CABINET OF CURIOUSITIES.

“Dreams in the Witch-House” and “Pickman’s Model*” are both interesting choices for inclusion, in that they are both some of Lovecraft’s most intimate works. I might have swapped out “The Terrible Old Man” for “Witch-House,” but then: I’m not Guilllermo del Toro, so what do I know?

Via Facebook.

*I’m certainly excited to see how this anthology’s take on “Pickman’s Model” diverges or converges with mine. And mine is only 99 cents!

Honest Theme Songs: JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION.

In lieu of a song that’s commercially available on Amazon. To quote James Lileks: this song is a labor of hate. And one of the strangely glorious things about it is their feeling of utter despair. Especially if you like Chris Pratt.

The JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION Honest Trailer.

(Yes, I’m feeling a little better, but after this and the next one I’m going back to bed.)

Anyway. JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION*. I don’t Honest Trailers were fans.

*#commissionearned. And I’m not gonna judge. I mean, I linked to it, right?

Not feeling so hot.

It’s not COVID, unless the test did a false negative, but there are other illnesses out there. Including summer colds. I’m gonna go take a nap, see if that helps any.

Sad news: Ring of Fire Press to shut down.

At least, that’s the word here. Ring of Fire Press was Eric Flint’s baby; and without him, they can’t keep going. It’s a damned shame: I bought a lot of their books.

More here. It looks like it’s been very comprehensively decided, alas. Which is, again, a damned shame.
