08/17/22 Snippet, TOUR OF DUTY.

Corpses! I’m sure it’ll be fine.

March 1

Aldini found something. Correction: he found someone. Someones. They’re all dead, and that’s a tragedy and a shame and this is amazing!

The dead area was a makeshift morgue, which we’ve seen before. We’ve even found corpses, or what was left of them after five hundred years of decay. But these! We’ve never found corpses this well-preserved. There are six of them, all in liquid nitrogen storage units. Normally keeping them that way would require power, but it gets damned cold in interstellar space. We’re lucky they’re not frozen nitrogen storage units.

Oh, another note: the word’s come down: we have to start keeping trace gasses in mind. The Blobmart’s internal temperature has started to rise on its own, thanks to all the waste heat we’re generating in here, and not dissipating out into space. The Amalgamation’s life control systems never ceases to amaze. Nothing’s going to explode, probably, but the vacuum’s not as hard as it used to be.

Back to the morgue, and the bodies! They were originally covered with cloth (I have no idea what it was made of), but Aldini was able to use the drone’s grabbers to pull them off. We can now see them in the canisters, all hung suspended in a pool of liquid nitrogen, and wrapped in some kind of tape, like one of those old-time mummies. Sounds ominous, but liquid nitrogen makes tissue extremely fragile from the cold. They must have not wanted any pieces to fall off.

THE SECRET WORLD TTRPG Kickstarter is scheduled for October.

I expect to be backing this. I am mildly surprised that Anvil Studios is using 5e for THE SECRET WORLD; but I am also reassured. 5e is what most people play: it’s not my own favorite system, but it’s a decent one and the more people who play TSW on paper, the more people who will go check out the Secret World Legends MMO. The more revenue FunCom gets, the more new stuff we’ll get.

That’s pretty much how it goes.

Book of the Week: Gathering Five Storms.

Hardly surprising, since I talked it up earlier, but Jim Geraghty’s GATHERING FIVE STORMS is a good technothriller. It’s also been a week that I am happy to see over, which meant the clarity of the technothriller was just what I was looking for. Check it out.

Tweet of the Day, Making Your Own Plagues Of Egypt For… Reasons? edition.

I recommend that you do not ask why someone would do this. What if they told you? Then you would know.

PS: I’m not a tree-hugger by any stretch of the imagination, but: I can see how dumping a million tiny frogs in a suburban neighborhood might be contraindicated.

08/26/22 Snippet, TOUR OF DUTY

Got to get this done!

“No. And even if they did? We know almost nothing of Hawoo biochemistry. Without a living one to ask, we have no idea if they were taking sedatives, mood regulators, or… vitamin supplements.” I’m pretty sure that Emily was going to originally say ‘suicide pills,’ but that’s a touchy subject.

“Okay, so they were doing medical experiments. Or just plain old biological warfare. Don’t look at me like that, the Amalgamation weren’t saints. Even if they were, the people on the Blobmart were on a voyage through Hell. They’d want to strike back. I sure would.”

“So would I,” Emily admitted. “But in the end the Hawoo went insane, and the only ones they could strike were each other.” She shook her head. “If only they had explained things more simply, so that we stupid children who found their bones could understand better! Then perhaps we could do something! Something that wasn’t futile!!”

…Then she spluttered, because I had tossed my cup of water in her face. “You were shouting,” I interjected before she could get really mad. “In the bad way. Take a patch.”

“I’m fine now…”

Now I was interrupting her. “Take a patch.

She took the patch. I could see the effects kick in right away. “Oh, my,” Emily said, her voice lacking the manic pitch it had a moment ago. “That surprised me.”

“Yeah, episodes can do that. Sorry about the water.”

Emily gave me a wan but genuine smile. “Don’t be. I prefer it to being shaken, or slapped. But we should change the subject.”

Why *remake* HELLRAISER?

Or ‘reimaging’ it, or whatever. Why not just simply make a new movie in the series?

Admittedly, I don’t really do these kinds of body horror flicks, but surely they wouldn’t care about any continuity issues? Have they ever cared about them? …This is a weird era, when it comes to IP.
