‘Promentory.’

This is a bunch of things to me, but one of them is: the end of summer.

VOYAGERS & VENTURERS (Spelljammer) looks interesting.

Via GeekTyrant comes Voyagers & Venturers, which is a collection of old-style races for D&D’s Spelljammer, updated for the new version. Since Spelljammer is going to be my group’s next campaign, I’m interested. I am particularly struck by the subversive possibilities of the Dohwar*:

Dohwar. Psionic space penguins who are both annoying and rampant capitalists — those two things may be connected.

…but that might be a little too obnoxious for this group. I’m still getting a feel for some of the other players; they’re good folks, but I’m still on table manners with them. Some of my, ah, antics are better left for when we’re all comfortable with each other.

*It always entertained me, how the Ferengi got away from Roddenberry. They aimed for ‘legitimately dangerous enemies,’ and got ‘comic relief because they’re so obviously unbelievably satirical’ instead. Capitalism always wins.

Tweet of the Day, Guess Which Name The Internet Is Picking edition.

Go ahead. Guess.

South Carolina's legal team is advising against the Gamecocks using the name Sir Big Spur moving forward because of some 💯college football bickering.
The State has some suggestions for a new name, including Cluck Norris, Marco Pollo and Cock Commander https://t.co/tjJsh83bwg

And no, it’s not ‘Cluck Norris.’ It’s a great name, but even I didn’t choose it for the poll. I’m only flesh and blood!

The “Cautionary Fables & Fairytales: The Lizard Prince and Other South American Stories” preorder.

I always get the Cautionary Fables & Fairytales books, because Kate Ashwin (of Widdershins) is an editor and sometimes artist in them. The latest one (The Lizard Prince and Other South American Stories) is also going to be the last one, because apparently they’ve run out of continents. Well, there’s still Antarctica, but there’s nobody living there, so they’d have to draw in all folklore about Antarctica. Which means they’d all have to write and draw horror stori…

…HEY!

Anyway, I like these, so check them out.

Not gonna lie: FORSPOKEN looks pretty sweet.

FORSPOKEN‘s from Square Enix, coming out on PS5 and Windows in January. There was some yelling from the Internet about the earlier trailer, which I’m glad I missed. Not least because I was able to go into this blind. I love the movement you see here, especially the water-surfboard:

Giving this one serious thought. Maybe if I get Christmas money? Because it’s looking pretty expensive right now.

08/25/22 Snippet, TOUR OF DUTY.

I know what’s going to happen. Now I just have to write it down.

Patreon!

February 26

I’ll be damned. We found log entries! Somebody on the Blobmart kept a log! THIS IS THE GREATEST MOMENT OF MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE.

Ahem.

Sorry, I’ve had a drink. But only one! A big one, but only one. The moment deserved it. Also, regulations insist on administering mild depressants to non-essential personnel when encountering a discovery of this magnitude.

Speaking of regulations: as per Section 1.31 (amended), let me put down the gist of what we know so far. Just in case, you know, everybody goes insane from the revelations, and this is the only record that survives: the logs are weekly summaries from somebody on the Blobmart’s command staff. They’re written in the oxy-nitro version of Amalgamation Standard, which is nice because that’s the one we know, at the kiddie level. Unfortunately, this version is… not. First disappointment: most of the technical jargon is above our heads and there’s entire sections where we don’t know enough to even try to figure it all out by context. Hopefully The Process will be able to help with that, if we get the logs back to Earth.

Second disappointment: the aliens on the Blobmart didn’t know what happened to the Amalgamation, either. All they did know was that something crashed out galactic civilization, starting with the FTL communications network, and that it only didn’t crash out their ship in the process because of sheer, blind luck. External comms were detached from the rest of the ship’s systems for maintenance, so only FTL comms got wrecked.

The log entries flatly refused to say what transmissions got through before the comms went out, but whatever it was, it was enough to make the Blobmart flee to interstellar space on the spot.

Spotty Internet tonight.

Some connectivity issues on my end (and a 503 issue earlier), so I’m calling it early.

Warner Bros. secured BATGIRL from being Snydered.

Sonny summed it up pretty well here:

…because the only reason Snyder was able to salvage JUSTICE LEAGUE (and utterly have his revenge upon Warner Bros. in the process) was because he had his own copy. And Warner Bros. clearly has figured that out. And, just as clearly: they have no desire to get jacked up in the future to try to make BATGIRL work after all.

The moral of the story? Save early and often, folks. Save early and often.

The DON’T WORRY DARLING trailers (which are maybe NSFW).

Before we go any further: there’s an excellent chance that DON’T WORRY DARLING is going to be tedious, when it’s not actually being offensive. It’s the safe way to bet. in fact. No question.

But damned if it doesn’t also look like it might be entertainingly [expletive deleted]-up, instead. I can tolerate heavy-handed political messages, as long as my time is not being wasted. Atomic Age science fiction / horror made by somebody who is simultaneously appalled and enthralled with the 1950s and 1960s aesthetic… might not suck?

Guess we’ll see.
