There’s a book in Keys to the Kingdom. I just need, you know, time. Or better scheduling.

Art for DUTIES!

Not the final hi-res versions, but this is what we’re going with. I like the one for THE FIGHT IN THE GROVE in particular. But I like them all. I also need to find out how the artist wants to be publicly credited.

Snippet the Last, FROGMAN PRINCE.

The plan is to check it all tomorrow, and then send it off to the beta readers. A September 1st release date is still on-track!

I brought a saber with me, but that was for the mad Baron. Besides, for this kind of close-in work I prefer a good, old-fashioned short mace. They’re quiet, easy to use, and rather intimidating. Besides, more than one monster, construct, or Wonderman of Alchemy out there has skin that can’t be cut or torn. For some reason, they rarely try to make sure that you can’t pulverize the bone underneath it.

These creatures hadn’t any protections like that; just claws and fangs. The second one did jump on me as I dropped the first with a broken nose and skull, but though I don’t like being bitten it didn’t like biting me even more. One taste of my blood and it was falling back, clutching at its mouth and trying to scream. The best it could do was a wheezing, guttural gasp that only ended when I stepped forward, and broke its neck. This wasn’t an act of mercy, since my blood probably wouldn’t have killed it. But it was a monster which had attacked me first. I wasn’t going to leave it alive behind me.

I squatted down to look at the monsters, wincing at the itching pain in my shoulder. It had already scabbed over, but I was feeling a little tenderized. And horribly hungry. “What are these things?”

Jonesy squatted next to me, giving my wound a quick once-over first. “Nachzehrers. Mutated.”

I looked. The general description matched — a human-sized corpse, with fangs and a protuding left eye — but: “They’re covered in fur. And the legs are oddly put together. Nachzehrers were human, once?”

Jonesy shrugged. “Mutated,” she said again.

Book of the Week: The Satanic Verses.

I read Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses, at the time. I entirely failed to see how any civilized person could legitimately argue that the author needed to be killed, harmed, or indeed attacked above the level of an unfavorable review. My opinion has not changed.

Title of the Day, The Internet Is Useful edition.

Sure, there’s a lot of junk on it. But then there’s really handy articles, like this one: How to Befriend Crows and Turn Them Against Your Enemies. Although for legal purposes I should note that I do not endorse the second half of that article title.

The existence of OUIJA SHARK 2 implies the existence of OUIJA SHARK 1…

…but I refuse to go looking for it*.

Although I am oddly touched by the sheer devil-may-care attitude shown in the special effects. Truly, we have finally reached a point where computer animation may put anyone’s artistic vision upon the screen. …Anyone’s.

*Kevin Kulp, who is very possibly the definitive authority on crappy shark movies (he’s certainly the most definitive authority who will speak to me voluntarily), probably would feel I am being unkind to the first OUIJA SHARK. I doubt he’d think I was being unkind to the second one.

Ouija Shark was terrible and super-charming. They wouldn’t pay the filmmaker enough to make the sequel, though, so one of his actors took it. The results look… dubious.

I don’t think I’m taking the right lesson from this WEDDING SEASON Hulu trailer.

I understand that WEDDING SEASON is supposed to be this comedy/murder mystery thing…

…but I can’t help but think, Gee. At least one of you shouldn’t have started an affair where one of the people involved is engaged. Actually, both of you shouldn’t – but one of you is probably the murderer, so no point in giving him or her advice. But the other one? Yeah, you’re making poor life choices.

One last chance to get SWORD INTERVAL in print!

Ben Fleuter lost his stock of graphic novels in a fire two years ago; but somebody had been holding a few copies of SWORD INTERVAL and DERELICT for him for a convention. Grab ’em fast while you still can! I’ve already scored my copy of DERELICT, so this post has a hidden expiration date…

OKAY! Finally!

The last 20 or so copies of my comic books that survived the 2020 fire that claimed the rest of my inventory!

Also! A new set of Monstergirl stickers!

ALSO?! My Liches Get Stitches pins are 20% off through August!

AAAAAAAA!https://t.co/aB4Tjz18ia pic.twitter.com/PLyA7QIRIc

So I *was* gonna go see BULLET TRAIN…

…only the brakes on my car aren’t cooperating. Dammit, I was going to have lunch with my sister in law and her SO and it was going to be this entire thing. Not nearly the worst thing in the world that could have happened to me today, but it’s still annoying. I’ve been trying to see this movie and hang out with adults for the past week.

Sorry. Had to vent a little.
