AudioFile review: Murder on Milverton Square audiobook

It was a very nice surprise when this review popped up! Highlights include “delightful series debut” and “entertaining cozy mystery” with a well-deserved “wonderfully narrated” for Philip Battley‘s reading of the Murder on Milverton Square audiobook.

Click through to read the full review:

AudioFile review: Murder on Milverton Square audiobook MURDER ON MILVERTON SQUARE. Milverton, Book 1, by G B Ralph, read by Philip Battley.Mystery & Suspense. 6.5 hours. Unabridged. Copyright 2024.Charming characters populate this delightful series debut, wonderfully narrated by Philip Battley. City-dweller Addison Harper travels to the tiny New Zealand town of Milverton to deal with an inheritance from an uncle he barely remembers. He meets a snarky attorney whose irritating manner causes his blood to boil. When Addison finds the attorney murdered later that night, hunky Sergeant Jake Murphy is called in to investigate. Battley delivers the local community of elderly gossips, Addison's uncle's imperious orange cat, and the simmering attraction between Addison and Jake with an appropriately lighthearted air. As Addison grows fonder of the town and its people, Battley's performance makes clear that he'll stay in Milverton, at least long enough for the next installment of this entertaining cozy mystery. G B Ralph author interview in the Manawatū Standard (print edition)

It’s me! In the paper!

Thanks to George and Warwick at the Manawatū Standard for the fantastic chat. I recently posted about the online edition of the article, but as you can see here, I got my hands on last Wednesday’s paper and was rather chuffed to behold the article in print.

Manawatū Standard article. Headline: Milverton mystery series brings murder to Manawatū.

If you want to find out more about the books, or explore Milverton for yourself, you are most welcome. In fact, I insist!

Manawatū Standard author interview: G B Ralph

I recently caught up with Manawatū Standard journalist George Heagney and photographer Warwick Smith for coffee.

We had a great time talking about books, writing, publishing, The Milverton Mysteries, worldbuilding, international readers, cosy mysteries, Agatha Christie, Richard Osman, my upcoming book launch, and all the rest.

And then, in what was a deeply strange occurrence for me, we did a photoshoot on George Street and inside Bruce McKenzie Booksellers.

Book launch in the library newsletter (with links!)

We’re launching the latest Milverton Mystery, Death in Douglas Glade, in just under two weeks at the library and I’d love to see you there! You can see the notice in this month’s library newsletter:

The photo above is from the launch of The Last Muster, the new book by the wonderful Carly Thomas (joined onstage by another local treasure Helen Lehndorf). Palmerston North City Library November 2024 news email screenshot 2 of 2.This month you can see Dr. Monty Soutar coming to talk about his latest novel Kāwai: Tree of Nourishment, published by Batemean Books, on Wednesday 13 November. This is the second instalment in the Kāwai series. Dr. Soutar (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Ngāti Kahungunu) has worked as a Senior Historian for the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Director of the Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne and as the World War One Historian in Residence at Auckland War Memorial Museum. In 2015 he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maori and historical research. He continues to serve on the Waitangi Tribunal. Top local cosy mystery writer G B Ralph launches the latest book in his Milverton Mysteries: Death in Douglas Glade, on Thursday 21 November. Come along to hear all about the adventures of Addison Harper in an area of small-town Aotearoa that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Manawatū. As Ralph's website says: 'Investigate The Milverton Mysteries for a chaotic cast of local busybodies, delicious baked treats, a demanding and disdainful ginger cat, a very slow-burn romance with a rather appealing policeman, and of course… murder!'

I don’t know about ‘top’, but I’ll take it!

Ashhurst Village Voice book review: Murder on Milverton Square

Ashhurst is a town with a population of about 3,500 residents, located just ten minutes’ drive up the road from me. Unfortunately, Ashhurst had to go, so I wiped the town from the map. But why? To make way for my fictional town of Milverton! I couldn’t have two small towns just across the river from each other, right?

I like to think of Milverton as the greatest hits of small-town Manawatū, Tararua, and Wairarapa – borrowing the best bits from each and mixing them all together into something ...
