Glastonbury Town Autumn and Winter Events 2023

Your guide to major events in Glastonbury Town for the last quarter of 2023

I love Autumn and early Winter in Glastonbury, after a hectic summer the community regroups and holds many events which bring colour, visitors and vibrancy to the town. Cafes and pubs become cosier in the colder months, there are plenty of gigs, gatherings and great places to eat. It’s generally easier to find visitor accommodation than in the Summer and it may be cheaper too.

Most shops in the Town are open seven...

The Absolutely True Legend of Atlantis

Rubbish left on the money box at the foot of Glastonbury Tor

I was recently sent this photo of the donation box on the bottom of the Tor path it was taken by Rupert, a follower of the NFG Facebook page. It shows the large metal money box covered with graffiti and surrounded by plastic bottles, wrappers and dog poo bags. Despite clearly not being a bin (and only a few metres from an actual bin and a dog poo bin) someone had left their rubbish there. Then, someone else followed their bad example. Then someone else. Quite a few someone else’s. It seems t...

Autumn Equinox 2023

Just an ordinary Autumn Equinox Saturday in Glastonbury – the Wytches Market, Old Forest Forge, local Artist Jon Minshull and busker Ben White.

Glastonbury was very busy indeed for the Autumn Equinox Weekend. I was in a bit of a daze and had honestly forgotten that visitors flock to the town for the Equinoxes I wandered into the Wytches Market in the Town Hall and met some lovely, friendly, creative folk. They hold these markets quite regularly throughout the year, I recommend you check the...

Glastonbury Town For Families

Child-Friendly Activities In and Around Glastonbury

Here’s my guide to places to go with the family in and around Glastonbury. As I don’t have kids I must admit I tend to think about visitor information in a rather adult-centric way, so I’ve compiled it with the generous help of Glastonbury friends.

Please see the Google map where you’ll find the locations and further info on all the places I’ve listed. If you have a recommendation for a place or activity that’s not on here please do get...

Facets of Avalon

A pioneering and colourful Glastonbury mother-and-daughter artist partnership

I recently spent a lovely afternoon chatting with mother and daughter artists Jan Billings and Rachel Reilly in their beautiful studio and shop ’Facets of Avalon’ in Glastonbury’s Archer’s Way.

Facets of Avalon Shop

The Facets of Avalon shop opened in 1999. Jan trained in textiles at the Royal College, the shop was an outlet for her textile work and the Aura Soma colour therapy system which she used to give readings and for massa...

A Magical Journey into Body Art

Temperance Tattoo Studio

I was excited to hear that Temperance Tattoo studio had opened in Glastonbury and was then wowed by the quality of the work I saw on Instagram. Keen to discover more, I went to meet the tattooist herself and watch her at work. Temperance Tattoo is the studio of Erin Larkin, known as Eire Ink @eireink, Eire being the Gaelic form of her name in recognition of her proud Irish heritage.

Inspiration

Erin tells me knew she wanted to be a tattoo artist at the...

May Day 2023 in Glastonbury

What a wonderful Beltane weekend! Sunday didn’t see the best of weather in Glastonbury, it rained for much of the day which rather put the dampener on the Dragon procession and events in the Abbey grounds. May Day morning wasn’t looking that promising either, but then the sun decided to shine on us just in time for the May Day festivities in the High Street and on Bushy Combe. The town saw an even bigger crowd than in previous years, my ‘back of a fag packet’ estimate is 5,000 people attended, t...

Growing Happiness Allotment Project

In the centre of Glastonbury, there’s a hidden garden where they mostly grow happiness. I recently went on a guided tour with the project’s founder, Tannas Crump, to find out more.

Tannas is a keen gardener and Event Coordinator for the local charity ‘The Volunteer Network’, based in Silver Street, Glastonbury. After the Covid lockdowns they conducted a survey and discovered that loneliness was a big problem in the Town. Tannas knew that gardening was a great way to bring people together, so ...

23 Uses for the ‘Light’ Paper

So, you’ve been wandering through Glastonbury on the way to the Tuesday Market and you’ve been handed a copy of the ‘Light’ paper. After only a brief perusal of its contents, you quickly realise that it’s a platform for Holocaust denial, White supremacism, racist hate speech, Islamophobia, very one-sided pieces on Covid, misogyny, QAnon promotion and, that far from being a ‘truthpaper’, it is actually emotionally manipulative and extremely unpleasant. Tempting as it is just to throw it in the ne...
