A Tribute to Denise Michell

Denny Michell Druid Mayor of Glastonbury

I was very sad to hear of Denise Michell’s recent passing, she was so much a part of Glastonbury for so many years, not least as Druid Mayor of Glastonbury (twice) and I will miss her enormously. I always intended to do an interview with her as she had such an amazing story.

I have taken lots of photos of Denny over the last few years, she wore such wonderful costumes for every occasion and was always larger than life. I hope you enjoy remembering her through this selection of photos and a c...

Glastonbury Begins to Reopen After Lockdown

Social Distancing Glastonbury High Street

After three months of lockdown during the Covid 19 crisis, Glastonbury Town’s ‘non-essential’ shops were finally able to open their doors again today. I took a walk down the temporarily pedestrianized High Street to get some photos for you. There was a lovely atmosphere and it’s made me feel really excited for Glastonbury’s future.

My experience of lockdown wasn’t too bad at all, I’m really blessed, I even took the opportunity to publish a Normal For Glastonbury eBook, but today I spoke to ...

Normal For Glastonbury – The eBook

Ever wanted to know what it’s really like to live in Glastonbury, England’s most magical, and oddest town?

Well, I can’t speak for everybody, but since accidentally starting this blog, I have spent the last four years writing about what it’s like for me. I’ve at last polished up the best of these essays and compiled them into an eBook, adding some new work that even my most loyal readers won’t have seen before.

You’ll find humorous observations and funny maps, an illustrated ABC of Glasto...

Virtually Glastonbury

I’ve put together some links so you can enjoy Glastonbury and learn more about the town, without actually being here. I hope locals will find something new of interest here too. There’s some links to content I’ve posted, in case you missed it the first time plus links to the best websites and videos from other people too.

Take a Tour

You can take a virtual tour of the Town with Google Street View, here’s a link that starts off in the High Street at Glastonbury Galleries.

Or, you can g...

Music from Glastonbury Town Online

I’ve hastily assembled some links to Glastonbury Town musicians for you, some of them were submitted by the artists, others are just my personal favourites. It’s by no means a comprehensive list and is generally reflective of my own musical taste, it’s also in no particular order. If you find something you like do search for more of their work, you are sure to find it, please support them by buying digital downloads when they are available. I’d love to know if you discover something new that you...

Not Normal For Glastonbury

Just three weeks ago I was wondering how I was going to do everything.

I had a meeting arranged with someone who was going to help me finish my piece on Accessible Glastonbury. I realised people wanted information about the May Day events and was compiling a guide all about that. I was getting flyers printed in time for the Tourism Symposium, advertising Normal For Glastonbury to the visitors who would be coming flooding into Town from Easter onwards. I was keen to get out to the Avalon Mars...

We Can Get Through This Together

Visitors can still connect with Glastonbury Town during the health crisis – here’s how to bring some Glastonbury magic into your own home.

I was so looking forward to Spring in Glastonbury this year, coming out of Winter’s hibernation to meet visitors from around the world, May Day, community gatherings, gigs, picnics in the park, watching the world go by in the High Street, Glastonbury Festival…….

I’m so very sad it’s not to be and sadder still for those of you who were looking forward to vis...

Glastonbury Town by Andy Brady

Origins

Ask any resident of the English town of Glastonbury where they are most likely to be living, and many of them will quickly tell you that Glastonbury is very high on their list of number one answers. What is it about this particular town that draws so many of its citizens to count themselves as people who might actually live there? To answer this question, we must first understand the town’s history, its past, where it has been, its history, what it has been doing and, most important...

Un-Avalon – Crap Postcards of Glastonbury

Many moons ago I spotted Glastonbury Tor from the Levels out towards Sharpham. What would have been a picture postcard perfect scene was ruined by a large, unsightly, rusting piece of peat processing machinery. I took a photo anyway. Since then I’ve got into the perverse habit of deliberately taking the kind of photos that would never make it into a Glastonbury tourist guide.

I published a few of these on the Normal For Glastonbury Facebook page and now other people are joining in. Here’s a ...

A Shed of My Own

My personal perspective on homelessness in Glastonbury

I have lived in a shed. Actually I’ve lived in several sheds. One was a homemade shed built on the side of a caravan on a traveller site on the Somerset Levels. I lived there for about two and a half years until the Spring of 2012. I had two wood-burners, one in the caravan, where I slept and cooked, one in the shed, which was my living room, dining room and office. I bought the odd ton of wood that was delivered on a flatbed truck, the r...
