Beyond Glastonbury: Finding Smiles in Istanbul

My experience of affordable dental care in Turkey

Faced with the crippling costs and long waiting lists of the UK dental system, I embarked on an unexpected journey to Istanbul for dental treatment. It was made possible by Trudental, a company set up by a Glastonbury local, offering comprehensive dental packages at a fraction of the UK cost. The experience exceeded my expectations. The clinic was modern and well-equipped, the staff were professional and compassionate, and the city of Istanbul off...

World Heritage Status – Holy Grail or Poisoned Chalice?

Last weekend I popped along to an event that was billed as a Public Consultation on the question of ‘Should Glastonbury be a World Heritage Site?’ Unfortunately, I feel the event failed to inform or consult and from numerous posts on social media it seems many in the town feel the same.

I was made aware of the consultation by this Facebook post from former mayor Jon Cousins:

Glastonbury Town Council has been considering the feasibility of moving forward with such a proposal, but, more importantl...

I’m an Inglenook Sprite, Apparently.

Hiding in the Fireplace

Back in July, in a mischievous mood, I posted this photo of myself and The Yorkshireman sat in the fireplace of the King Arthur. We were watching a very grumpy Lancastrian playing pool and I can’t remember what music they were playing, but it was probably terrible and definitely too bloody loud. I thought I was hidden away in there, but curiously everyone passing stopped for a chat. I ended up wearing my gin and tonic after someone lent in for a hug and knocked it off th...

Glastonbury Mural Trail – Five Years On

A Town Full of Colour

This month, the Glastonbury Mural Trail celebrates its fifth anniversary, there are now over 70 murals by more than 50 different artists dotted around the town, many of them brightening up walls previously blighted with ugly tagging and graffiti. In this article I take you behind the scenes to meet some of the people who keep the town colourful.

A Guide to Accessible Glastonbury Town

A guide for visitors who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters and those with mobility issues.Glastonbury Town – Access All Areas?

Glastonbury proudly boasts of being a centre of ‘Unity Through Diversity’. When it comes to points of view, particularly where they concern religion or spirituality, the community is very accommodating. However, I’ve been finding out how the town is perceived by those whose diversity comes in the form of differing physical abilities. Sadly, it seems we are not scoring ...

A Call for Respect and Civility

Living Simply

Wilf Peddle, known in Glastonbury as the ‘Egg Man’ was a local legend. Since his recent passing, many tributes from those who knew him have revealed that he was much loved and respected in the town and beyond. Wilf belonged to a simpler, kinder age, he was less than 20 years my senior, yet he reminded me of my grandparents’ generation, born in the early 1900’s. Like them, Wilf demonstrated old-fashioned values, of kindness and thrift, making do and mending, a respect for the lan...

Beltane 2024 in Photographs

Glastonbury at Beltane is a feast for the eyes, I hope you enjoy my photos from this year’s May Day. Please do click on the images to see them full size.

Chalice Well

As regular readers of this blog will know, I am not a morning person, I don’t assume solid form until about 11 am and that requires at least two cups of coffee. Consequently, I missed sunrise on the Tor, deciding to conserve my energy for the photography marathon throughout the day. I made it to Chalice Well for about 9am, wh...
