Goodreads Giveaway for 100 copies of The Light Tower ends June 29

My latest novel, "The Light Tower," published on March 9. To celebrate, we are running a Goodreads Giveaway for 100 free copies of the Kindle version. The contest ends June 29, so enter now to win!

Here is the link to the contest entry: https://buff.ly/3glATFa

"The Light Tower" is a fictional novel that grew out of a tragic article I read when we lived downtown in Chicago. The article reported about a pregnant woman in labor who escaped from a Chicago hospital, climbed to the top of a light tower in a nearby abandoned railway yard, and then jumped to her death. The mother died, but the paramedics miraculously saved the baby.

That story hit me like a ton of bricks. After that, I often wondered what would make a woman do that? What happened to the baby?

Years later, I decided to write my own fictional story about two characters -- a pregnant mother that jumps to her death and her surviving daughter. I also used this opportunity to explore the genre of “dual-timeline” novels, which I had not previously written.

So far, the book is well received, with 4.5 stars on Amazon. If it sounds interesting, the Giveaway is a fun way to win a copy free! As always, thanks for reading my books.

So great to take some time off...

I noted in a recent post that finished my ninth novel a few weeks ago (tentatively titled Donny's Well). For me, the "ending" is always a bit stressful, and I tend to write it in long stints.

Where do I sell my books?

I am occasionally asked where my books are sold. Here is a brief summary.⠀

Amazon is "the 800-lb gorilla" in publishing. In our experience, Amazon's KDP and Audible platforms are easy to use and reach a big portion of the readers. Amazon advertising is also easy (but expensive).⠀

Still, we recently switched my print books on Amazon to "Expanded Distribution," which reduces the royalty rate but allows other booksellers and libraries to purchase paperbacks from large distributors. It is nice to see my print books appearing locally. ⠀

My ebooks are listed exclusively with Amazon's KDP Select to remain available through Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Owners Lending Library (KOLL). My books are long and expensive in print form, and it is nice to offer them to my readers free through Kindle Unlimited and KOLL.⠀

My recently published audiobooks are not listed exclusively on Amazon's Audible (which sets high prices). Our preferred audiobook platform is Findaway Voices/Author's Direct. Author's Direct gives me a branded audiobook storefront and Findaway Voices provide access to every possible retailer with more flexible pricing and higher royalties. ⠀

Here is an interesting comparison of Findaway Voices and ACX: https://buff.ly/3w2r05y

The Ending

"The Ending"

After six months of daily writing, I am nearing the end of my ninth novel. I find that reaching "the end" is a bit stressful for a couple of reasons.

First, none of my books are the same, none of my characters reappear, and I don't follow a recipe. Necessarily, each ending is a new creation.

Second, I let my characters drive the plot and ending. It may sound a bit nuts, but my outline goes away within a few weeks of starting a novel, and then the characters take over. (They often surprise me!)

So I usually have no firm idea what the ending will be (or even when it will come) until I get there. I do know the ending is near for this story - I can feel it. So, I keep nudging the characters.

I am anxious to see where they go!
