13 Things That Begin With “N”

13 things from my world that begin with “N: in no particular order

Names: I’ve written under threeof them: Sherry Lewis (which is the name my parents gave me when I was born), Sammi Carter (a name chosen to honor my maternal grandfather), and Jacklyn Brady (the last name chosen to honor my paternal grandmother.)

2.Now: I spent far too much of my life as a young adult and young mother worried about the future and running from the past. As a result, there are a lot of things about my kids’ e...

On Reading (and Writing) a Series of Books

narniaI came across an old blog post this morning in which I admitted that, with 200 pages left to go, I had given up reading The Chronicles of Narnia — at least I had given up on reading it straight through to the end. I was reading the book for my book club, but I still had two weeks until our club met, so I figured I had time to take a break.

700-plus pages of children’s adventures in a magical land might be fun, but not all at once.

To tell the truth, I was ready to put the book aside after the...

13 Things that Begin with “M”

Thursday1303

13 Things in my life that begin with M — in no particular order.

Mom: It’s one of my two favorite “jobs” in life. When I was young, before I was married, I thought I wanted 4 kids. My ex-husband wanted 5. We ended up with 2, which was probably smart. I adore my two daughters, but I’m not sure I would have done well trying to raise more than two. Then again, maybe I would have risen to the occasion. We’ll never know.

Crime Scene Tape2.Murder: Not that I’ve committed it or anything. Or even seriously contem...

13 Things that Begin with “L”

Thursday1304

13 things from my world that begin with “L” — in no particular order:

Learning. I love learning new things, especially things about people and cultures. I’m not so big on attending classes and being taught. I love learning by experiencing. Let me try a new-to-me food or find something new and interesting about a part of the world I’ve never visited, and I’m a happy camper. alarm clock.jpgLate: Although this isn’t my thing anymore, I was late for work every single day for 15 years before I quit my day job...

The News in a Nutshell

It’s been a while since I managed to put up a new blog post, and for that I apologize. I could offer you 1,001 excuses, but I’m guessing nobody cares enough to wade through them all. In the spirit of trying to catch up, here’s the latest news in a nutshell.

Crime Scene TapeI’m closing on the end of my current Work-in-Progress, tentatively titledDead on Arrival, featuring a brand-new protagonist, Katie Scarlett O’Malley, a police officer in a fictional Montana town near West Yellowstone.

Scarlett (don’t call...

TV Wars (in my own head.) British vs. US

Flags

Welcome to today’s installment of TV Wars: British vs. US. Okay, so this is the only installment, and it takes place entirely inside my head…but welcome anyway.

I’ve been noticing something about myself lately, and I’m not sure what it means. Frankly, except for a few guilty pleasures, I like British TV a whole lot more than American TV. I don’t know why that is. More confusing, I rarelylike the female lead characters on American TV shows, but the same thing is not true for British TV shows....

13 Things That Begin With “K”

Thursday1306

In no particular order..

1 Keyboards: This word has double meaning in my life. For the past 25 years or so, I’ve earned my living with the keyboard of a computer, but I also spend about 9 years playing the keyboard in a band.

2 Kids: I have two of my own and two grandchildren, who recently spent a month at my house and brightened my summer considerably. I also teach a class of 8 & 9 year-old kids at church. Children are a big part of my life.

Macrame3 Knots: Here’s a little-known piece of trivia fo...

13 Things That Begin with “J”

Thursday1301

In no particular order:

1. Jacklyn Brady: For six years, I wrote the Piece of Cake Mystery series using this pen name. Sadly, my publisher decided not to continue the series after the last book came out, but I had a great time writing about the worlds of cake decorating and New Orleans while it lasted.

Blogging at Romance University

In case you missed it, here’s a link to my post on Avoiding Author Intrusion that appeared on Romance University on June 1.

You’ve probably heard the term ‘author intrusion’ before, but it’s not specific to one element of your writing. Author Sherry Lewis discusses the different forms of author intrusion and how to avoid them.

Hope you enjoy it!

13 Things that Begin With “I”

Thursday1302

Yes, I am a day late.

In no particular order: (I warn you in advance, this list may be odd. I is a difficult letter!)

1) Ice. You can offer me a drink without ice or a drink in a bottle, and I’ll probably take it, but I much prefer ice in any drink (except those intended to be served hot, of course.) For years, I’ve had a “big red cup” that I picked up at a gas station near my home in Utah that my grandkids know is usually filled with ice, and sometimes only ice. When they were little, they’...
